Why do Mormons Serve Missions? Revisiting Brazil After 20 years

Why do Mormons Serve Missions? Revisiting Brazil After 20 years

So, we came back to my last area in my
mission. It’s called Providência area. There have been a lot
of changes. The church has really grown. There are lots of new church buildings.
The building that I was in, this building right here, they tore it down and built a
bigger, taller, better building. It really improved the area. It’s really nice to
see the growth of the church in this area. I’m really happy to see that. I
didn’t see any people that I know in this ward since the church is growing so
much but it was good to see all the faithful members of the church here.
We’re gonna go explore some more of the area as well to see how
much I remember. See if we can find your old old apartment. Yeah. We’ll see we’ll
see how good my memory is. This is where we met a guy named Adalberto.
So, my companion and I Elder Neto, he and I were walking in
this direction on that side of the street and then Adalberto was walking in
this direction he saw us coming. He thought, oh no it’s those crazy believers and so he crossed
to the other side of the street. So guess what I did? I saw him coming and I saw
him cross the street so I crossed to the other side of the street as
well making sure that he was not gonna pass us without me talking to him and
inviting him to church. So we met right here and he was carrying a bag of acerola. I said, hey what’s that… so I invited him to the church. I said hey why don’t you come
to church with us tomorrow. It was a Saturday. He came with us to church the
next day. and then one week later, we baptized him. Pretty cool huh? The story that Chris just told about Adalberto was really cool because we met Adalberto. He came to dinner with us and he shared some really special stories
with us. He pulled out his journal and had our wedding announcement from 16
years ago. He had pictures of Chris and Chris’s family. He had journal entries
about Chris. And even better Alberto served a mission and he pulled
out pictures of this kid, a teenager, that he baptized who had now served a
mission and been married in the temple and had a baby and it was just like
amazing. The circle of life you know just the work of these boys out here serving
the Lord. Serving the people and changing lives. So Alberto’s life was changed.
He baptized people and they’re learning and growing in the gospel
finding joy and happiness and life Starting families, living meaningful
lives the best they can and so for me, I was choked up and teared up because
it was just so beautiful to see that. That’s why we’re here. That’s what it’s
all about and this is where it all started for Chris. 20 years ago before I
ever met my husband he served a mission here in Belém do Pará brazil and we are
back with our five kids walking the streets that he used to walk. We just got
out of church. The people were just so kind. Kissing and hugging us and welcoming us. It was beautiful and now we are walking to Chris’s last apartment. His old
apartment that he used to live in. It’s hot. We’re kind of tired and hungry but we’re
here and we want to see where our dad served. Where he walked, where he worked and just really get a good feel for his mission so we’re looking for his
last apartment and I think it’s cool. I want the kids to see this but it’s
wintertime. It’s June. It’s June so it’s supposed to be
winter. It’s supposed to be the coolest season but it is hot. It is super hot so
hopefully we find it soon. You guys having fun? What do you guys think about daddy’s mission? Cool. I don’t know how he survived because it’s so hot. I know. And there are a lot of mosquitoes. True. This work guys missions are
serious. It’s a lot of sacrifice. Alice, do you want to serve a mission? Yeah. Do
you want to serve a mission in Brazil? Yeah. Tiago does this make you want to
serve a mission? No. I know. It’s hot and scary, a little dangerous, a
lot of work, mosquitos. Missions are real and they’re a true sacrifice. I’m grateful
for everyone that has done it for our church because missionaries baptized me.
This is important and beautiful. These are açaí seeds. so the fruit is gone and
now it’s just the seed. We are a family of seven from Reno Nevada, United States of America. Right now, we are actually living in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil for the last year
and a half and that big move for us has everything to do with his mission. It all
started here. Him learning the language, his love for the people and for Brazil
rubbed off on me. Then we got an opportunity to open up a trampoline park
in Salvador. So we did it. We brought our five kids here. What’s up guys? There’re
only four. We brought our five kids here and we’ve been living in Brazil for
the last year and a half and we finally got out to the Amazon to check out
Chris’s mission. We’re here exploring and trying to find his last apartment. At
this very moment. We’ve been walking for a while. Going off of memory here. It’s starting to rain too. Looks like the memory is shot. Just walking
we’re wandering at this point. We’ve been walking for awhile. It’s nice that the sun went away cause it’s hot. Do you see those rain clouds? We’ve got to find shelter. This is actually one of the first places we came to visit a couple years after we were married before we had kids. It all started here for me
as well. I love this and maybe the kids will appreciate it when they’re
older but we’re on this walking adventure now trying to find this
apartment. It’s uh it’s not working out here we’ve been walking for a while and
luckily it hasn’t rained on us too bad. It’s also cool. It’s cool
cuz I want to see where he worked and walked. He has a pair of mission
shoes, some boots, that were just tore up. Holes on the whole bottom of it. Barely
hanging on and he walked in them for two years. This is where his feet were,
which is to me it’s just powerful and beautiful and you know, it’s just cool
to be here with our kids and with our family and getting record of it.
Recording it because I think they’ll want to see this later on when they have
to make a choice to serve a mission and when they’re trying to find answers and
get direction here’s a little piece of what their dad had to go through so
anyway we love sharing this with you guys. Love being here. Feel so grateful and so
blessed right now. We’ll let you know if we end up finding this apartment. Are you tired baby? We did not find the apartment but didn’t
we enjoy that walking tour of Daddy’s mission? We’re calling an Uber. We’re headed home. Thanks for joining us on this little mission adventure. Thanks for watching our videos. Please subscribe to our channel. Tchau for now.
