What I’m Reading: Camryn Garrett (author of FULL DISCLOSURE)

Hi, my name is Camryn Garrett. I’m the author of
Full Disclosure, and this is what I’m reading. [MUSIC PLAYING] My first recommendation is
Normal People by Sally Rooney. It’s about two teenagers in
Ireland, Marianne and Connell, and they sort of
have this love affair that’s not a love affair. It takes the form of different
things as their relationship forms throughout the years. And I really love it because
I feel like it gives you an inside view into two
different young people like as they’re
growing and deciding what they want and they’re
not even sure what they want or who they are. I feel like Sally Rooney really
takes young people seriously and their minds seriously, and
that’s why I love her work. My second recommendation
is Patron Saint of Nothing by Randy Ribay. It was just long-listed
for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature. It’s about a boy who’s half
Filipino who loses his cousin and decides to go back
to the Philippines to confront the drug
war that’s happening. And what I really like
it is because it’s just like a teenage boy trying
to confront this gigantic thing that he really has
no power to stop and also dealing with
grief at the same time. And I feel like it puts
a lot of emphasis on love and how much power
love can have over you, even if it’s not
between two lovers or like your boyfriend
and girlfriend, it’s between families. My third recommendation
is This Time Will Be Different by Misa
Sugiura, and it’s about a teenage girl trying
to save her family flower shop and has to do with the
impacts of Japanese internment on modern-day
Japanese-American families. I really like it
because it has to do a lot with identity, especially
Japanese-American identity. My final recommendation
is Full Disclosure by me. And I think people
should read it because it’s a really
fun coming-of-age story. It’s a love story
centering on a teenager who usually doesn’t
get to be centered in these types of stories. [MUSIC PLAYING]
