We can’t accept this colored priest. But the Catholic Church deplores double slavery
– that of the mind and that of the body. She endeavors to free us of both. You ain’t nothing but a trouble maker. I was a poor slave boy, but the priest of
the Church did not disdain me. It was through the influence of one of them
that I became what I am tonight. As a colored priest you are expected only
to minister to the Negro, and not to us. O Lord, give me the opportunity to bring them
all forgiveness and grace. You are nothing and will never amount to nothing. It was the Church who taught me to pray and forgive my persecutors. We want no Toltons in this place. I shall work at it and pull at it as long
as God gives me life. Get out of Quincy, go elsewhere. Get! May I never give up.
