Now, almost 35 years later I am still wondering how a great coach like Joe Gibbs could possibly decide to throw a pass from his own 12 yard line with 12 seconds left in the half and only one timeout left when he was already down 2 scores and his QB was totally sucking – only hitting 6 of 17 passes……..and in the Superbowl!!! Even if he would have succeeded instead of Theismann throwing that absolutely ridiculous pic 6, what did he stand to gain in that short time????? If he simply runs the clock out, then in the 2nd half when the Redskins score a TD, they are still in the game 14-9. What could he possibly have been thinking??? I think he totally panicked!!!!

  8. Theismann had a really poor game. Inaccurate, lacked poise and made poor decisions. Raiders stopped the run and the Redskins passing game was off all game.

  9. They hardly used Marcus imo. They could have used him in the passing game a lot more, and ran him more. They ran like three other guys. The Raider's didn't use him that much.

    – the Raider's 3-4 D looked as potent as the 70's Steelers D. Lot's of pressure.

  14. Most lists of the greatest NFL coaches of all time list both Walsh and Parcells ahead of Joe Gibbs. If you compare Walsh to Gibbs, Walsh had a much easier division to play where Gibbs was competing in the toughest division at the time. They each won 3 Superbowls but Walsh had the greatest Quarterback of all time(and the greatest backup QB) and Joe Gibbs won his Superbowls with 3 different Quarterbacks, none of them Hall-of-Famers. Parcells won 1 less Superbowl than Gibbs. So why is Joe Gibbs always ranked lower than these two coaches? Well it has to be THIS game against the Raiders as the reason.

  15. Hate the Redskins to this day. So glad the Raiders smacked the crap out of them and lil' Joey Theeeesman. Skins shouldn't have even been playing in the Super Bowl. The only reason they were was because of two phantom penalties against the 49ers in the NFC championship game with under two minutes to play which led to Mosley's game winner. Watch the replays, there was no holding on Ronnie Lott and there sure as hell wasn't any pass interference against Eric Wright. Both of those calls were the biggest bunch of crap ever and the ref's were either blind, paid off or had big bets on the game. I didn't even mention the phantom interference call against Lott in the third quarter that set the Skins up for a TD. Miserable bunch of officiating but Karma came back around and smacked the Redskins upside the head in the Super Blow-Out! Way to go Raiders. Marcus, Cliff, Mike Haynes were studs. I still don't know how the Raiders won two Super Bowls with the 'Lugger' at QB but sure glad they did. Raiders vs 49er's would have been epic (and should have been)! Screw you Redskins fans, you know I'm right.

  16. Raiders winning super bowl 18 is Los Angeles's only super bowl victory to date. Rams are going to the super bowl, if they win, it will be Los Angeles' first super bowl win in 35 years, and second overall.

  17. It was rumored heavily at the time, Theismann threw this game. The famous witness accounts of him seen in New York with a brief case a week later really started heating up the rumors. And in watching this game and the throws he made, it does look highly suspicious. Certainly the pick before the half is impossible to explain away. You can't convince anyone that Theismann couldn't see Squirk lurking RIGHT THERE! But look at the throws in the first Redskin series and after given great field position after the muffed punt. Those throws had no chance and Theismann had a weird smirk on his face after each horrible throws Many people noticed how unemotional and detached Theismann was during this game. Strange.

  18. The season i started loving the Raiders. Hayes, Marcus, Bruce, Alzado, Howie, plunket, floris, AL….. loved this team. Ironically my older brother by 4 years was and still is a redskin fan and my oldest brother by 5 years was a Raider fan like me ( influenced by him to become a fan). we watched this game in grandmas living room in Santa Ana California. Still waiting for another Super Bowl Championship from my Raiders.

  20. The Redskins lost this game at the end of the 1st half when Squrek int the ball for TD! Skins should have just ran the clock off and be down 14 to 3! They may have been able to keep the pressure on the Raiders only being down by 11 and stick with their game plan! Now 21 to 3 was a bigger deficit to overcome! Or maybe not! It was the Raiders day! The one thing that the Redskins had happen to them in this game was that they trailed by double digit figures! That was something that the skins did not have happen to them in 1983 except one game! The 48 to 47 loss to Green Bay!

  25. It was really amazing to watch how the Raiders totally dominated a Redskins team that was the highest scoring team in NFL history and was so dominant during the year. Only to be held at 9 points. That had to be one of the best defensive performances in Super Bowl history. Marcus Allen was a total beast in this game.

I always heard about him in #RaiderNation but never really saw him play that much because I m from the East Coast and I was too young, but seeing him in this game showed me exactly why everybody loved him so much and why so many people say he was one of the Greatest…Thx for posting this game

Only the second football I'd ever seen, the first was the Super Bowl where Washington played Miami, and I had the displeasure of being among a bunch of drunk Redskin fans, who shamelessly made my life miserable for daring to root for.my favorite animal ( I was six years old at the time ), so I was with the same sorry ass bunch this time. SWEET SWEET REVENGE!

    it would take the AFC another 14 years until they won the SB again..
    this was the Raiders 3rd SB title in 8 seasons..
    the Redskins played all California based teams this postseason, Rams, 49ers, Raiders
    the Redskins went on to win another 2 Super Bowls, the Raiders zero…
    Marcus Allen broke the Rushing record and had the longest rushing TD from scrimmage..

  37. This game unfortunately cost the Redskins "Team of the Decade" accolades. Its not just that they lost, it was how they lost and the praise Washington enjoyed prior to this ass whippin. As we saw in the opening, the Redskins were head n shoulders better than any team for a 3 year period. You couldn't say the Redskins had easy schedules and all of that stuff. The NFC was stacked. Even though the Cowboys were in decline, they didn't fall off the cliff. Thw 49ers, Giants, Vikings, Rams, and Bears were either really good, or on their way. The thing that could be said and would be accurate is that the NFC was in transition. The Redskins just hapoened to get to excellent status faster. The 1983 version just peaked early and if this were a 14 game season the Redskins probably win going away, but as a Redskins die hard back then we could see and feared this could happen. Basically because we played the Raiders before earlier in the season. (The Game of the Year. A Redskin victory. Scoring 15 points in about 3 mins fir a comeback squeaker)
    Not to take anything from the Raiders because they were 10p% ready, but for the only time in Gibbs 1st tenure, the Redskins were obviously outcoached, and Gibbs simply "panicked. As evidence by the horrible sequence late in the 1st half with a 14-3 deficit. Backed up with less than 30 sec left, Jack Squirek became a house hold name, and the Redskins were in massive trouble down 21-3 at the half.
    Truth be told, this loss humbled and disturbed Joe Gibbs so bad that he confided in close friends that he would never panic like that or let his team believe the hype again, and he didn't. Gibbs won 2 more Super Bowls and it cemented Gibbs legacy of excellence and it was rewarded with a Hall of Fame gold jacket. Sometimes you need to take a "L" before you can win! It sute makes it worth the pain.
    Gibbs is my favorite coach because of it all, and Gibbs never wet the bed again.

  38. People talk about Marcus Allen, and justifiably so. CLIFF BRANCH, at 35, burned Darrell Green… CLIFF BRANCH… Why in hell isn't he in the Hall Of Fame? Rest In Peace to arguably the greatest burner the NFL has ever known. He struck fear in the hearts of Mel Blount, Michael Haynes, Kenny Riley and Darrell Green.

  39. Been a RAIDERS fan since I have been 8 or 9 years old. Been bleeding SILVER and Black to this day. Now I'm 46 and still a RAIDERS fan. and will be forever. This was truly a great game long live the legends of the SILVER and BLACK. Long live the RAIDER NATION!!!

  40. Marcus Allen, who could imagine after a record breaking performance like that. Marcus would be iced the he was. Years wasted on the Raiders’ sidelines! Turns out, his limited playing time meant limited hits and overall wear & tear. When he was finally free of Al Davis and went to KC, as a Raider fan I was happy for him. During his stint at KC, they went 9-1 against my Raiders!
