St. George Island Sea Oat planting

St. George Island Sea Oat planting

[MUSIC PLAYING] This particular stretch of
beach gets a lot of traffic. It’s a very popular place. It’s the center of the island. So when we trample
it or walk over it, the ATVs to empty the
garbage or all the things that we do when we enjoy
the beach, all of that has to be mitigated. It’s making sure
that the barrier island is able to do
what God built it to do. And that’s really to
protect the mainland. St George Island
is in North Florida in the panhandle and
very much environmentally focused, which is the
reason why that we’re glad that we’re able
to come here and help with some community service. Duke Energy employees have
volunteered today for our Duke Energy in action event. We like to refer to
them as the sea of blue. They are planting sea oats,
which protect the environment. They help to prevent
beach erosion. We’ve got about 50 folks today
to come out, dig holes, plant sea oats in the ground,
and hopefully protect these dunes for years
and decades to come. It’s a very simple project. We’re essentially digging
a hole in the sand. We’re going to plant the sea
oats individually by hand. And that’s basically it. We’ll just get out there and
get dirty with our hands, and plant some sea oats. The way we do that is we
dig a hole 12 inches deep. We put this terra
firma in there. What we do is we take a sea
oat, and we plant it very deep, almost the entire plant. This seat at here, in
about three to four months, ought to have a good
solid root system. And what it’ll do is it’ll
help keep the sand in place from erosion. Duke Energy specifically
likes to focus on the areas where we are, our
service territories We live in these communities. We work in these communities. And we want to help
these communities become better as well. I work for Duke Energy. I work in this area. These are my coworkers. And protecting the environment
is very important for us as a company and very important
to me as an individual. I think, like so many
other Duke employees, I’m proud to be out here and
help support the communities that we serve, and
especially our projects that help preserve the environment. It’s just so important to us. It’s important to
the communities. Obviously, we’re
an energy company, and our success is tied
to our communities. It’s truly a win-win situation. It makes you very
proud, it really does. You see that across
every employee that I come in contact with. You see a level of
pride in the company that we represent, the
communities that we serve. And it is an
absolute team effort. And I’m just so grateful
to be a part of it. One, two, three. Duke!
