1 John chapter 1 lets will jump in
at verse 8 well fact let’s just go back because
it’s it’s the so good verse 5 this is the message that we heard from Him and
we announce you that God is light and in Him and here is John’s point there is no
darkness at all ok that’s John’s point for the rest of
the book of John actually 1 John verse 6 if we say we have fellowship
with Him and yet walk in darkness we lie and we don’t practice the truth why is
that because we say we’re in Him and remember there is no darkness in Him and
when you receive Jesus Christ you’re in Him so if there’s no darkness in Him
then there’s none in you but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the
light we have fellowship with one another who do we have fellowship with
one another Bill’s point this morning and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from
all sin how do we get cleansed from all sin by being a part of a body if we say
we have no sin we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us
it’s funny people pull that out of context and say see we all sin like okay
well let’s read the rest of John’s letter concerning sin if we confess our
sins he’s faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness did you get that you know what cleanse you from
unrighteousness cleanse me from unrighteous means it means take away the
root of why I did that verse 10 if we say we have not sinned we make Him a
liar and His word is not in us now how many understand there was no chapter
breaks in this in this book it wasn’t chapter two John didn’t like okay
chapter two here’s a new thought this is still the same book right okay so I’m
saying it’s still the same letter so the very next thought so let’s read it in
context if we say we have not sinned we make Him a liar and His word is not in
us my little children I’m writing these things to you so that you may not sin if
anyone sins not when if if anyone sins we have an advocate with the father
Jesus Christ the righteous He’s become a perpetuation for our sins
not only for ours for but that of the whole world how many understand before
you knew Jesus you don’t need an advocate that word there attorney you
don’t need an attorney you ned a Savior but after you receive
Jesus if you sin you need an attorney why do you need an attorney because He’s
done everything to deliver you from sin so if you still sin after you’ve been
cleansed and you have power over sin how many know you did it by pure choice not
by the fact that you were under the power of sin and therefore you need an
attorney are you with me okay let’s move ahead to John chapter 3 there’s a
bunch more good stuff we could just read the book and it would be great verse how
about chapter 3 verse 1 see how great the Father’s love is bestowed upon
us that we be called children of God and such as we are for this reason the world
doesn’t know us because it didn’t know Him beloved now we are children of God
it’s not a appeared yet what we will be we know this though that when we He appears
we’ll be and we will be like Him because we will see Him just as He is and
everyone who has this hope fixed on Him what purifies himself just as He is pure
next verse everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness and sin is
lawlessness you know that he appeared in order to take away sins and in Him there
is no sin no one who abides in Him sins and no one who sins has seen Him or
knows Him little children make sure no one deceives you make sure no one
deceives you the one who practices righteousness is righteous just as He is
righteous the one who practices sin is of the devil for the devil has sinned
from the beginning the Son of God appeared for this purpose this is a
verse we quote often to destroy the works of the devil now huh me know the
works of the devil our sickness disease you know one trying to say possession
demon possession oppression but the context is sin
that the Son of God appeared for this reason that he would destroy the works
of the devil let me let me finish start the verse again the one who
practices sin is of the devil the devil has sent for the beginning the Son of
God appeared for this purpose to destroy the works of the devil in the context
he’s speaking of sin that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil which in
this context is sin it’s getting quiet in here no one who is born of God
practices sin because His seed abides in him and he cannot sin because he’s born
of God by this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious
everyone anyone who does not practice righteousness is not from God nor does
the one who does not love his brother now I didn’t write that that’s in the
book you’re like well that’s a pretty stiff standard it is and part of the
challenges is that there’s a great temptation to water it down to make
everybody feel good but this is not a commandment it’s a promise let me say it
again this is Jesus John is not saying this like I command you to not sin he’s
saying here’s the good news you don’t have to anymore hum you know when God
said be holy when Jesus said be holy as I am holy how many understand you can’t
be holy unless he makes you holy and so when God says be holy as I’m holy how
many understand that’s not a commandment it’s the promise he gave you the power
to be holy what do I have to do agree I have to agree with it I can’t change my
life but if I change my mind He’ll change my life
