THE WAIT IS JUST ABOUT OVER. WITH THEIR ROSTER SET.. THE SAINTS NOW SET SAIL INTO THE 2017 SEASON. WELCOME TO GAME PLAN..WITH JUAN KINCAID..I’M SEAN FAZENDE. LONG WAIT….INDEED. BUT, IMAGINE HOW ADRIAN PETERSON FEELS? THE FORMER VIKING HAS HAD THIS GAME ‘CIRCLED’ ON HIS CALENDAR FOR MONTHS NOW Adrian Peterson:”I was talking to my wife about that last night actually and she was like ‘So babe, how pumped up are you for Monday night?’ i said, you know, for me, it’s going to be cool going back, seeing the guys, playing against those guys but the most important thing is leaving with a W. That’s the most important thing so yeah, it’ll be good because once we get this W, it’s on to New England.” FAST STARTS ARE EASIER SAID THAN DONE.. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY’RE ON THE ROAD….IN PRIMETIME..AGAINST A TEAM MANY THINK COULD MAKE THE PLAYOFFS. THAT’S THE CHALLENGE THAT LIES AHEAD FOR THE SAINTS.. THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS ON MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL AWAIT. AND FOR THE BLACK AND GOLD.. THEY KNOW GETTING TO ONE AND OH..WILL NOT BE EASY. THE 2017 SAINTS SEASON IS HERE….AND FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2013.. THE SAINTS WILL TRY TO COME OUT ON TOP. THEY’LL FACE THE MINNESOTA VIKINGS.. A TEAM THAT MANY VIEW AS AN UP AND COMER. AFTER GOING EIGHT AND EIGHT LAST SEASON. clip 15:07:56-8:11 Drew Brees:They started off extremely fast last year but were not able to make the playoffs but came out of a very tough division where two other teams did make the playoffs. We know this is going to be an extremely hard-fought, tough physical game.> OFFENSIVELY SAM BRADFORD RETURNS AS SIGNAL CALLER.. COMING OFF A SEASON WHERE HE LED THE N-F-L WITH A 71.6 COMPLETION PERCENTAGE. HE’LL HAVE STEFON DIGGS.. ADAM THIELEN AND TIGHT END KYLE RUDOLPH TO THROW TO. AND DYNAMIC ROOKIE RUNNING BACK DALVIN COOK IN THE BACKFIELD. HIS BIGGEST ISSUE MAY BE HIS OFFENSIVE LINE.. WHO WILL PLAY TOGETHER AS A UNIT FOR THE FIRST TIME MONDAY NIGHT. THE VIKINGS DEFENSE IS ONE OF HTE LEAGUE’S BEST.. THEY THE VIKINGS DEFENSE IS ONE OF HTE LEAGUE’S BEST.. THEY FINISHED RANKED THIRD BEST LAST SEASON… OFF THE EDGE THEY HAVE ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG DEFENSIVE ENDS IN THE GAME IN FORMER L-S-U TIGER DANIELLE HUNTER…WHO HAD 12.5 SACKS LAST SEASON. IN THEIR SECONDARY..HARR ISON SMITH IS CONSIDERED ONE OF THE LEAGUE’S BEST SAFETIES. WHILE XAVIER RHODES HAS EMERGED AS A LEGITIMATE SHUTDOWN CORNER… clip 5929 15:09:12-31 Drew Brees:” Rhodes is a top tier cornerback … cornerbacks in this league.” LAST YEAR THEY FINISHED WITH 27 TAKEAWAYS.. AND FOUR DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWNS. THE VIKINGS ARE ALSO YOUNG.. THEY’LL START THREE ROOKIES AGAINST THE SAINTS.. THEIR AVERAGE AGE FOR THEIR STARTERS IS 26 YEARS OLD. chime in GETTING BACK TO PETERSON RETURNING TO MINNESOTA. IT’S NOT ONLY A BIG DEAL FOR HIM… IMAGINE HOW EVERYONE BACK THERE FEELS… WE KNOW HOW REVERED HE IS BY VIKINGS FANS… IN HIS OLD LOCKERROOM…PE TERSON’S GREATNESS WAS UNDERSTOOD. IN THE SPAN OF ONE OFF-SEASON, PETERSON’S FORMER VIKING TEAMMATES HAVE GONE FROM TACKLING HIM IN PRACTICE…TO NOW HAVING TO GAME PLAN FOR HIM AS A SAINT. IT’S EXPECTED TO BE AN EMOTIONAL NIGHT IN THE GREAT WHITE NORTH…AND THE VIKES SAY THEY’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT…IN PART, BECAUSE OF PETERSON’S RETURN Mike Zimmer:”I hope we have a chip on our shoulder. This game isn’t about Adrian Peterson, it’s about the VIkings and the Saints. They’ve got a lot of great offensive weapons and he’s a great player but this game isn’t about Adrian Peterson.” Xavier Rhodes:”Before we were teammates and couldn’t tackle him but now it’s a must. It’s going to be pretty fun, I see he’s making a pretty big deal of it but still, it’s a game, we’ve got to tackle him no matter what.” Everson Griffen:”My big thing is that it’s going to be fun going up against Adrian. I’ve been knowing him for eight years now, the biggest thing is going out and beating the New Orleans Saints.” EVER SINCE THE N-F-L DECIDED THAT THE SAINTS AND VIKINGS WERE GONNA KICK OFF THE MONDAY NIGHT SCHEDULE..THIS GAME HAS BEEN CIRCLED ON A BUNCH OF SCHEDULES… NO DOUBT, EMOTIONS WILL BE HIGH ON BOTH SIDELINES…HOW MIGH THE SAINTS USE THAT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE IT’S ABOUT CHANNELING IT IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION…AND I THINK THAT’S WHERE SEAN PAYTON COMES IN. REMINDING PETERSON THAT HE’S NOT IN MINNESOTA ANYMORE AND DOESN’T HAVE TO DO IT ALL. REMEMEBER, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, THE FUTURE HALL OF FAME RUNNING BACK HAS A FUTURE HALL OF QUARTERACK ON ‘HIS’ TEAM COMING UP ON GAME PLAN….TO THE FILM LAB WE GO.. WHERE I’LL SHOW YOU THE IMPACT THAT LOSING WILLIE SNEAD WILL HAVE ON THE SAINTS OFFENSE. AND LATER, CHRIS HAGAN’S EXTRA POINT IS A MUST FOR FANTASY FOOTBALL PREPARATIONS THIS SEASON. music Announcer:”You’re watching Gameplan.” MUSIC PLAYS IT’S BEEN SAID ‘MANY’ TIMES THAT SAINTS RECEIVERS HAVE THE SEASONS THEY DO…’BECAUSE’ OF DREW BREES… THAT ‘HE’ MAKES THEM THAT MUCH BETTER. WE’VE SEEN IT MANY TIME OVER THE YEARS. … WILLIE SNEAD IS THE LATEST EXAMPLE.. THE SRUE-HANDED SNEAD WILL MISS THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF THE SEASON…HERE’S WHAT THE SAINTS OFFENSE WILL BE WITHOUT WE BEGIN WITH NOW WHAT BUT WHERE SNEAD LINES UP.. THE SHROT ANSWER IS ANYWHERE.. HE IS MORE THAN JUST A SLOT RECEIVER. AGAINST OAKLAND LAST YEAR.. SNEAD IS LINED UP TO LEFT ON THE OUTSIDE. IN THAT SAME GAME HE LINED UP ON THE RIGHT.. ON THE INSIDE OF A THREE RECEIVER BUNCH FORMATION. HE ALSO OBVIOUSLY LINES UP IN THE TRADITIONAL SLOT AS WELL. PERHAPS SNEAD’S BEST QUALITY IS ROUTE RUNNING. ITS HOW HE’S ABLE TO CREATE SEPERATOIN WITHOUT BLAZING SPEED. HERE HE IS AGAINST OAKLAND.. WITH A LINEBACKER MATCHED UP ON HIM.. SNEAD GIVES A HEAD FAKE OUTSIDE AND HITS THE SLANT ROUTE.. THE DEFENDER HAS NO CHANCE.. AND ITS AN EASY COMPLETION OF 17 YARDS. HE FOOLED SEAN SMITH ON AN EARLY COMPLETION IN THAT GAME WHEN HE APPEARS TO BE RUNNING A DEEPER ROUTE.. ONCE SMITH TURNS HIS SHOULDERS.. HE CUTS IN FOR THE DIG ROUTE. HE CAUGHT SMITH AGAIN LATER IN THE…ITS THE PRESNAP PLAY WE SHOWED EARLIER… SNEAD IS ON THE LEFT WITH SEAN SMITH PLAYING OFF SNEAD SELLS THE INSIDE ROUTE.. THEN HITS THE FADE OVER THE TOP FOR A HUGE GAIN. SNEAD ALSO AN UNCANY ABILITY TO LOCATE SPACE IN ZONES..AGAINST KANSAS CITY.. SNEAD IS ONCE AGAIN ON THE INSIDE OF A BUNCH FORMATION.. AS HE RUNS HIS ROUTE TOWARDS THE OUTSIDE HE TURN UPFIELD.. AS HE NOTICES THE TWO DEFENDERS SPLIT IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.. HE SITS IN THE ZONE.. FOR A BIG THRID DOWN COMPLETION. SO NOW YOU KNOW WHAT ONE OF SEAN PAYTONS BIGGEST CHALLENGES WILL BE THIS WEEK…REPLACING WILLIE SNEADS PRODUCTION AND HIS ABSENCE LEAVES A BIG HOLE IN AN OFFENSE THAT’S ALSO WITHOUT LAST YEARS TOP RECEIVER BRANDIN COOKS, WHO WAS TRADED TO NEW ENGLAND. SNEAD WAS THE TEAMS THIRD LEADING RECEIVER LAST SEASON…NEARLY REACHING A THOUSAND YARDS…BUT, WE’VE SEEN IN THE PAST THAT THIS OFFENSE FINDS A WAY TO ADJUST TO WHAT’S NOT THERE BY UTILIZING WHAT’S ‘STILL’ THERE Sean Payton:”Brandon Coleman has been in it and seen quite a bit of action and then of course Tommylee is going into his second year hadn’t had quite the exposure or the amount of snaps, but both of those guys are going to play and play a lot. I know both of them will look forward to it. They are different in their skillsets and we’ve got to have the right role in place for them to have success. I think both of them will be excited.” UP NEXT ON GAME PLAN, WE ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS! WHAT ROLE DO YOU SEE ADRIAN PETERSON HAVING IN HIS RETURN TO WHAT ROLE DO YOU SEE ADRIAN PETERSON HAVING IN HIS RETURN TO WHAT ROLE DO YOU SEE ADRIAN PETERSON HAVING IN HIS RETURN TO MINNESOTA? WE’VE GOT A VIEWER QUESTION FROM THE FINAL WORD FEATURE OF OUR FINAL PLAY APP… Tommy FROM Natchitoches Will the saints have an offensive line capable of blocking for the passing game as well as Peterson without major switching in the line? Tom IN NOLA How come everybody worries about defense and nobody worries about offense? Stats cannot be the total measuring stick. PETE IN SAINT-BERNARD WANTS TO KNOW….. “Do you think the Saints defense has turned the corner finally? Or is it a little too early?” Erin FROM Thibodaux Who starts at linebacker? Craig Robertson, or Alex Anzalone? JOSH KATZENSTEIN OF NOLA.COM AND THE TIMES-PICAYUNE, THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. STILL TO COME….MONDAY NIGHT GAMES ARE LIKE THE FOURTH QUARTER OF FANTASY FOOTBALL MATCHUPS. FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN FINISH THE WEEK STRONG AS CHRIS HAGAN HANDICAPS THE SAINTS AND VIKINGS’ KEY CONTRIBUTORS. music Announcer:”You’re watching Gameplan.” MUSIC PLAYS WELCOME BACK IN, TIME FOR SOME KEYS TO THE GAME. ONE BIG QUESTION IS WHETHER OR NOT THIS WILL BE A HIGH-SCORING GAME THAT FAVORS THE SAINTS OR A LOW-SCORING GAME….THAT’S HOW THE VIKINGS LIKE TO PLAY. IN 2016, THESE TEAMS WERE ON THE OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM FOR SCORING AND POINTS ALLOWED. THE SAINTS SCORED JUST OVER 29 POINTS PER GAME BUT ALSO ALLOWED ALMOST THAT MANY. THE VIKINGS HAD A NARROW MARGIN AS WELL BUT BOTH THEIR POINTS SCORED AND POINTS ALLOWED AVERAGES ARE RIGHT AROUND TWENTY. AS MUCH AS THE OFFSEASON APPEARS TO HAVE CHANGED THE BLACK AND GOLD, YOU FIGURE DREW BREES IS STILL YOUR BEST BET IN A HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR. A NEW SEGMENT ON GAME PLAN ‘THIS’ SEASON…..FANTAS Y FOOTBALL. THAT’S RIGHT…AND IT PROMISES TO GIVE YOU YOUR WEEKLY FANTASY ‘FIX’…WHO TO START? WHOTO SIT? CHRIS HAGAN HAS YOU COVERED. With the start of the new season comes a pivotal first week of fantasy football. If you have any Bucs or Miami players, you’ve already taken a hit with their game being postponed to Week 11. As for the game we’re focusing on, Vikings and Saints, there are a few players that I like more than others. First of all, despite the Vikings boasting one of the league’s best passing defenses from a year ago, you absolutely have to start Drew Brees. That should be obvious, given where you drafted him or how much you paid for him in an auction. Second, I like Michael Thomas, maybe even more without Willie Snead, given the few more targets he’s likely to get. He’s the go-to target for Brees, and you can be sure that the Saints will find ways to get him the ball. Running back is where it gets trickier. Adrian Peterson seems like a must-start because of how motivated he’ll be to find the endzone against his former team. But on the other hand, you know the Vikings and their defensive unit that gave up just 9 rushing touchdowns last year will be just as eager to shut him down. Personally, I lean toward Mark Ingram until proven otherwise. He’s done nothing but trend upward the last three seasons as a top 15 fantasy football running back. As for Alvin Kamara, I’d let him sit until we have a clearer picture of how the Saints will use him. As for the Vikings offense, you probably have to start Dalvin Cook. He’s a starting running back that you probably took in the first four rounds of your draft for a reason. However, signs point to the Saints and their improved linebackers being better against the run. They haven’t proven it in the regular season yet, but a rookie running back may not fair well. Receiver, on the other hand, is where I do like the Vikings. Stefon Diggs and GAUGE THAT FIRST WEEK… BUT OUTSIDE OF RUNNING BACK, IT’S PRETTY STRAIGHT FORWARD WITH THE SAINTS…. AND WITHOUT WILLIE SNEAD… JUST MAYBE ANOTHER SOLID RECEIVER EMERGES AND BECOMES THIS WEEK’S HOT WAIVER WIRE PICKUP… BACK TO YOU… WE’VE GOT AN EXTRA DAY TO GET YOU READY FOR THE SAINTS AND VIKINGS. SEAN’S REPORTS FROM MINNEAPOLIS BEGIN SUNDAY ON THE FINAL PLAY AT TEN-THIRTY AND THEN MONDAY, HE’LL BE LIVE AT FOUR AND FIVE FROM THE VIKINGS’ GORGEOUS NEW STADIUM LEADING YOU UP TO KICKOFF JUST AFTER SIX O-CLOCK. AND BE SURE TO TUNE IN FOR FOX-8 FOOTBALL FRIDAY AT TEN-THIRTY-FIVE AS CHRIS HAGAN AND I TAKE YOU AROUND THE STATE FOR ALL THE GREAT PREP ACTION IN LOUISIANA. UNTIL THEN, THANKS FOR WATCHING GAMEPLAN AND THANKS TO EVERYONE AT FOX 8 FOR THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS. OUR NEXT NEWSCAST IS AT FOUR-THIRTY A-M, GOOD NIGHT. Announcer:”This has been Game Plan with Juan Kincaid and Sean Fazende.
