Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No.1: A quickfire guide

Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No.1: A quickfire guide

My name’s Carola Krebs and I’m an Austrian cellist. I will perform the Saint-Saens Cello Concerto – it’s a French one – with Southbank Sinfonia in our next Rush Hour concert. I am really looking forward to this beautiful piece with my beautiful cello. It combines beautiful, lyrical melodies with
really fast passages and it starts with a big chord from the orchestra. There’s no orchestral introduction, just this
big chord from the orchestra, and then the cello starts immediately. That’s the beginning of the concerto. Isn’t that great?! But of course it also has something for the heart. In the slow section it’s full of lyrical passages,
it’s composed in 3/4 which means it’s kind of waltzing. You can imagine yourself in a big ball room,
just enjoying the evening. The third section is a fast one, of course,
it ends with a big firework between the cello and the orchestra. I’m looking really really really forward to
playing this with my lovely colleagues and I hope to see you there!
