Notre Dame in Rome

One of the things that struck me at the Mass
with the Pope was it was a wonderfully prayerful Mass. He has a very calm and prayerful way of presiding
which it struck me that here is someone who has so many worries and so much weight on
his shoulders who really begins the day in such a calm and prayerful way. And that just flows out from the Pope: that
calmness, that prayerfulness. That was tremendously inspiring and one the
most important experiences I’ve had at the Vatican since arriving. We spoke briefly. Unfortunately the Pope’s English isn’t great
and my Italian and Spanish aren’t great, but we communicated in various ways. I asked for his blessing and he was generous
enough to give it, so that was a very powerful moment for me. We had a wonderful meeting today with Cardinal
Kevin Farrell who recently received an honorary degree from Notre Dame. He oversees the office that is concerned with
laity, the family and life. He has an important job and it was good to
talk to him about what Pope Francis’ vision is and how Notre Dame could be part of that. We’ll meet with other key officials who have
oversight on various parts of the world, with the Secretary of State’s office, with the
council on ecumenism and various officials to talk about ways in which Notre Dame can
work with the Holy See, with the Vatican, in serving the Church.
