Mauer The St. Bernard Helps Monticello Students Learn

GOING TO MELT AWAY THIS MORNING WITH A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE. YOU WOULDN’T THINK OF A 175- POUND ST. BERNARD AS A TEACHER. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THIS BIG OLD DOG IS DOING. SO CUTE. LOOK AT HIM. YES, MOTIVATING YOUNG MONTICELLO MINDS TO READ. I RECENTLY VISITED WITH HIM AT SWAN RIVER IN MONTICELLO. I’M NOT SURE I’VE EVER HEARD A ROOM OF YOUNG CHILDREN SO QUIET WHEN MAUER WALKED IN. THIS MORNING WE SHOW YOU WHY THIS DOG IS MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE CLASSROOM. WHEN MAUER THE ST. BERNARD THERAPY DOG WALKS INTO THIS CLASSROOM, A HUSH FALLS OVER THE CROWD. HIS OWNER SAYS HE’S JUST YOUR TYPICAL DOG AT THEIR HOME. AT HOME HE IS JUST LIKE ANY OTHER DOG. HE LIKES TO HAVE FUN. HE LIKES TO SLEEP. WHEN HE SEES HIS BACKPACK AND WHEN WE PUT THE COLLAR ON HIM, HE HAS A THERAPY COLLAR, HE GETS REAL EXCITED. HIS PERSONALITY SEEMS TO BE SUITED FOR THIS TYPE OF WORK. HE’S VERY PATIENT. HE LOVES KIDS. HE’LL LAY DOWN SO THAT HE’S MORE AT THEIR LEVEL. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THERAPY DOGS IN CLASSROOMS HELP WITH CHILDRENS LEARNING, PHYSICAL HEALTH AND EMOTIONAL WELL BEING. OKAY. THE BEST THING FOR ME IS JUST SEEING SOMEBODY HAVE EITHER AN OKAY DAY OR NOT SO GOOD DAY AND THEN THE SMILE THAT HE BRINGS JUST WALKING INTO THE ROOM. MONTICELLO MOM MELISSA PETERSON HAS WITNESSED THIS FIRSTHAND WITH HER SON NOAH. HE HAS AUTISM AND THE ATTENTION IT TAKES TO FOCUS AND PUT TOGETHER THE WORDS HAS BEEN A STRUGGLE SINCE FIRST GRADE. IT’S AMAZING WHAT HAPPENS AS THEY GROW. NOAH LOVES TO READ BUT HIS MOM SAYS HIS READING LEVEL IS NOT UP TO PAR WITH HIS PEERS. AT TIMES SHE SAYS NOAH CAN GET FRUSTRATED. IT MAKES ME SAD THINKING ABOUT HOW THINGS LIKE THAT THAT COME SO NATURALLY TO A LOT OF KIDS THAT HE WOULD RATHER SIT OFF BY HIMSELF AND READ ALONE. PETERSON SAYS SHE’S SEEN A HUGE IMPROVEMENT SINCE NOAH STARTED READING TO MAUER. MAUER GIVES HIM SOMETHING POSITIVE TO THINK ABOUT WHEN HE THINKS ABOUT READING BECAUSE IT’S BEEN A REALLY BIG STRUGGLE FOR HIM. WHY ARE FROGS SO GOOD AT BASEBALL. JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE MANY IMPACTS THIS BIG DOG MAKES WHEN HE WALKS INTO A ROOM. MAUER SAYS THANK YOU FOR READING TO HIM. NOAH’S MOM HOPES SHARING HIS STORY WILL GIVE OTHER PARENTS IDEAS ON HOW TO ENCOURAGE THEIR CHILDREN TO READ. AND JUST VISITING WITH HIM IN THAT CLASSROOM FOR A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR AND I COULDN’T BELIEVE HOW QUIET EVERYONE WAS AND THEY LISTENED, THEY WANTED TO BE ABLE TO PET THEM. IN ORDER TO DO THAT THEY HAD TO SIT DOWN AND READ THEIR STORIES. I THINK WITH CHILDREN WHO HAVE AUTISM DOGS CAN PROVIDE SO MUCH HELP WHEN IT COMES TO CALMING AND A SENSE OF SECURITY AND EVEN IF THAT CHILD HAS A MELTDOWN I’M TOLD THAT DOGS DO WONDERS. NOAH’S MOM MELISSA TOLD ME THEY STARTED GOING TO SEE MAUER IN IT A LIBRARY AND THAT’S WHAT REALLY HAD AN IMPACT ON HIS READING SO THEY ENCOURAGED HIM TO DO IT MORE FREQUENTLY. NOW THEY USUALLY VISIT HIM MOST OF THE TIME WHEN HE DOES VISIT THE LIBRARY. WHAT IF SOMEBODY WANTED TO VISIT WITH MAUER, HAVE A THERAPY VISIT? HE DOES DO FREE VISITS. HIS HANDLER COMES ALONG TOO. ANYBODY CAN SCHEDULE A THERAPY VISIT WITH MAUER THE SAINT. THERE’S HIS FACEBOOK PAGE. DO YOU LIKE HIS SHADES? VERY PROFESSIONAL WITH THE TIE AS WELL. ALL OF THE WORK THEY DO IS VOLUNTEER BASED. THEY VISIT HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS. THERE’S NO CHARGE. HE USUALLY VISITS HOSPITAL AND CANCER CENTER EVERY TUESDAY. HE’S AT THE MONTICELLO LIBRARY
