Lesson 11 – Baptism with the Holy Spirit – The promise in the New Covenant


Welcome to this teaching about the baptism
with the Holy Spirit. When Peter stood up on Pentecost he said, “Repent, get baptized in
water and you will receive the Holy Spirit.” And then he said, “This promise is for you,
your children and all God will call on.” What promise? The promise of the Holy Spirit because
just before he said that they all got baptized with the Holy Spirit. Then he spoke about
a prophet many years ago called Joel who was prophesying in the end times God will pour
out his Spirit on all flesh. Hebrews 8:11 -For all shall know me, from the least to
the greatest, all will experience dreams, visions- and so on. So the promise of the
Holy Spirit is for everybody. This is an area in the church where there has
been a lot of misunderstanding in the area of the baptism with the Holy Spirit. That
is why our churches today look so different from what we read in the book of Acts, so
I think you will love this teaching. This teaching will provoke you and at the same
time set you free and help you to know what it is all about, to help you get baptized with
the Holy Spirit if you have not yet experienced that. Or to help you understand that you
who have the Spirit are called to go lay hands on other people so they also may receive
the Holy Spirit. God bless you with this exciting teaching that will help you to come into
the life we read about in the book of Acts. Welcome to lesson #11 I am
going to talk about the baptism with the Holy Spirit. We heard about
repentance toward God, baptism into Jesus Christ and now it is baptism with the Holy Spirit.
I am so excited about this word because I believe this is going to change your life.
This is going to change so many people’s lives because there have been a lot of areas
where there have been wrong teachings and misunderstandings in the churches today.
One has to do with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Because we have not understood
what it was all about, the churches today look so different from the normal Christian
life we read in the book of Acts. Remember we always have to go back and try things
by the Word. We read in the book of Acts how the first disciples were living
and there you see a supernatural life being led by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit
was a part of the church. He was building the church, leading people. But then the church
changed and this is what many of us are building on today. There is another fear when it
comes to the Holy Spirit, it’s like, no no, no, we don’t want the Holy Spirit. We
only want Jesus and God. It is so interesting because if you look at when Jesus came to
earth, He was sent by God to get people to repent towards God, but the religious people
who believed in God at that time said, -no, no, no, Jesus we don’t want you we only want
God- so they didn’t receive Jesus. Now Jesus has gone to heaven and he had sent his Holy
Spirit down here on earth, Acts 2:17, “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh” and
Luke 24:49. And now we also have religious people who just say no, no, no we don’t
need the Holy Spirit we don’t want you we only want Jesus and want God. You cannot separate
one from the other; the Godhead, how do they baptize? No, no, no the Holy Spirit is here to
reveal Jesus, the Holy Spirit is our helper, He came here to earth sent by God to us and
we cannot say we only want God or we only want God and Jesus. No, if we want to be a
true believer we need to repent towards God. We also need to get baptized into Jesus Christ.
And we also need to receive and get baptized with the Holy Spirit. So I look forward to
talking about the Holy Spirit and baptism with the Holy Spirit. I’m going to
share some testimonies and come with an introduction here in the beginning,
then I’m going to come with some foundation about baptism with the Holy Spirit. We are
going to look in the book of Acts and then I’m going to come with practical things on
how you get baptized with the Holy Spirit. And how you baptize other people with the
Holy Spirit. I’m also going to talk about speaking in tongues and how we can use that.
Because when we talk about speaking in tongues this is also where there has been a lot of
misunderstanding. I know many Christians who think speaking in tongues is just speaking,
speaking, speaking but we can use speaking in tongues to get revelation. We can use it to
come closer to God, to get vision, to get prophesy. We can use it to be effective in the kingdom
of God. I can share a testimony of being led by the Holy Spirit, seeing a vision, speaking
in tongues. Nearby here we have a school, in that school some years ago I studied religion
and one day I was going to go to class to have religion. But that day I had got a classroom
so in the dinner break I wanted to invite people to the classroom and then talk about God.
Before I went there I was so praying, I was praying in tongues; I used that
to get close to God and to understand what God was saying. And while I was speaking
in tongues I saw a vision. I saw something in front of me I did it. And I saw a man
in front of me with a bad shoulder. I was praying and pacing around in my living room
at home speaking in tongues and this person got healed. Then I heard someone behind
me and I turned around I put the finger in one ear and I removed the finger and this
person got healed. It was what I saw then I went, I had to hurry up and went to the school,
I had the class room and I was sharing about Jesus. And there came about 30 people in there
and when I shared about Jesus I asked afterwards anybody who is sick. There was a man, he said,
“I have a problem with my shoulder.” I said, “Come up.” and he stood beside me and when
I put my hand on his shoulder it was like, -woo- it was exactly what I had seen 20
minutes before at home and it was the same shoulder the same height. I put my hand
on the shoulder and this man got healed, immediately he got healed. I heard somebody
behind me say, “Can God also heal tinnitus?” And I turned around and there was a woman
sitting there and I put the finger in the ears exactly like I had seen in the vision
20 minutes before. When I removed the finger everybody was crying in the class. Everybody
looked at her and she was like, “I am healed!” And everybody started to talk again
and I talked more about Jesus. So I saw the vision, I experienced it and
then later it happened. What more happened was when I was finished I have to hurry off
to the classroom where I was going to have my teaching, where I was going to learn about
religion. I was in a hurry so I was running there, and I felt the presence of the Holy
Spirit at that meeting and when I was running I was almost felt like I ran faster
than the Holy Spirit. And then the Holy Spirit came up again. It’s not easy to explain
but I felt it that day. It’s not like I’m feeling that every day, I don’t go by feeling
but I felt it that day. Then something interesting happened because when I came into
the classroom I sat down. Then they were saying the names of the people who
were there. And when the teacher said my name, “Torben” — “Yes.”
When she said my name something happened! A man stood up and shouted! And
took his bag put it on the chair and said, “No! I cannot be in this classroom.” and started
to pack his bag, “I cannot be in this classroom any more because I had just heard a name and
I cannot be in this room with this name.” He was shouting and the teacher said, “Hey…hey,
sit down…what is wrong?” And he shout and she started to cry. It was so crazy, he just
said, “I cannot be in this room with this name.” He took his bag, he went out and he never
came back again; nobody knows what happened. He never came back to the school again.
My friend, when he saw that he turned to me. He was a Christian. He said, “Torben,
it was a demon.” — “Yes it was.” I didn’t pray there because I was so much in shock
about what happened. Then I remembered in Acts chapter 19 you read that there
were some people who didn’t know God. They were not filled with the Holy Spirit,
they tried to cast out a demon of somebody. And the evil spirit answered them. Can
an evil Spirit answer? Yes, they can. It answered, “Jesus I know, Paul I know but
who are you?” So the Spirit knew Jesus and had heard about Paul, but not those
people. And when my name was called the spirit manifested because that day I was
filled with the Holy Spirit, they know me. When I share a testimony like this,
for many Christians will say, “No, no, no, no, be careful, be careful. No, no we don’t have
to go into the occult.” But they have nothing to do with the occult, it has to do with Jesus,
it has to do with the Bible. To be a disciple of Jesus is to live a supernatural spiritual
life. And there is a lot of fear in the church today. One of the fears is that
many of the churches think that the Holy Spirit and the gift of the Spirit is to
do with Pentecost: something new, something that happened a hundred years ago. This is
not new. Yes, many things got destroyed because of the Catholic church and Lutheran
church, but there have always been people who had lived in the Holy Spirit who have walked
with God- always. I have a Danish book here. It is only in Danish, I don’t think it is
in English. The title is, “Two Thousand Years With the Holy Spirit”. In this the author
goes through church history. In the year 300 what happened, 400, 500, 600, all of the
last 2000 years. He shows that we today have had two thousand years of history with the Holy
Spirit. There have always been people who have been speaking in tongues and prophesying and
being led by the Spirit. It has been throughout history. So to say that it is all a
Pentecostal thing is not true. It is a Jesus thing, it is what we read in the Bible.
And another thing when it comes to this fear. I believe fear in the church today is because
there are a lot of crazy things happening in the church. They do a lot
of spiritual things and say that this is by the Holy Spirit. But I don’t
believe everything is by the Holy Spirit. And I believe we need to go back to the Word, we
need to try everything by the Word of God. I have seen people with spiritual experiences
and they say, “O more, more God, more God.” Is it the Holy Spirit who is
working in them? No, it’s not the Holy Spirit. This is a demon manifesting.
I say, “Come on, you should not say, “…more Lord, more Lord” when it is a demon.
Then you have to cast the demon out of them. So there are a lot of things which have crept
into the church today who are not by God, who are not the Holy Spirit. I believe that, I
see it. I travel around and see many things and especially the manifestations.
Things like, “Oh it’s the Holy Spirit”, where it is really demons who are manifesting.
And there you should not say more Lord, more Lord, there you should cast the demon out.
So we need to try everything by the Word of God. I see that we should build on two
things: the Spirit and the Truth. If you only go by the Spirit and supernatural experiences
you can be deceived and you can go wrong. We see that. No, we have to have the Spirit but also
the truth the Word of God. And what I said here before- with this experience: I spoke in
tongues, I got a vision from the Holy Spirit. For many Christians it is wrong. But hey,
read the Bible, read the book of Acts. in some ways, doesn’t mean that we should
throw everything with the Holy Spirit out. This is what we see today because there are
some people on the other side of the church today who say -no, no we don’t want this-
and by that they throw everything away. They believe they are building on the Word,
but they are not because if they were really building on the Word, their life would also
look like what we read in the book of Acts. So what I want in the Last Reformation,
my ministry, and what I believe God has called me to, is to unite the Spirit and
the truth. The Word and the Spirit. We need to build on this. We as Christians: to be a
disciple of Jesus is to live a supernatural life. I think it was in lesson 2 I talked about
that Jesus is not a religion, He came with life. Christianity is not a religion like any other
religion, this is life, supernatural. I can give a testimony. A short time ago I
was on a TV program in Denmark where I was together with a famous Jew, a
famous radical Muslim who was a woman politician; very well known in
Denmark. And we three: me, Muslim and Jew, were talking about homosexuality.
There was a case we were talking about out of our beliefs. I was
talking out of what the Word was saying. And afterwards I was together with
this Muslim, sitting and talking. And I said to her tell me of your experiences.
“What have you experienced with God? Tell me.” She said, “Oh, oh I got a good feeling and I feel
this is right and when I am together and I’m doing the things and praying. I feel this
is right and it give me a peace inside.” And I said, “OK, tell me more. What has
God done? How has He talked to you? How has he led you? How have you experienced
supernatural things? Tell me more. But she didn’t have more to tell, why? Because it was just
religion. And this is what many Christians also say, when I say tell me about your experiences,
“Oh, He gives me a peace and I feel it is right.” — “Tell me more.” But they don’t
have more to say because for them it is just religion. But Jesus came with life we should be
led by the Holy Spirit. I said to this Muslim “Listen.” I started to tell testimonies
and she started asking. For nearly two hours I was just sharing one testimony
after another and she was asking questions about God and about my faith. And
it also became so clear to me there, that it is not religion Jesus came with but something
totally different. But many Christians believe and many outside the church believe that
Christianity or religion is like every other thing. But there is a difference if you meet
a radical Muslim they don’t have anything that, -Oh it feels good and I believe this is the
truth- There is no supernatural life, there is no testimony. Then when we talked about new
age. OK, there are some people who have stronger testimonies there, but they have nothing compared
with what we experience. I have many people from new age, the occult world, who are coming to
me because what I experience is so much more real than what any of them experience. Yes,
they see some healing but not the same power as we do. Yes, they experience something but
not the same strength as we do. Just a few days ago I got a phone call, I was out walking
a month ago, I was in the library. On leaving the library to go home, I heard somebody ask
the woman who was working there where he could find some books about the supernatural,
UFOs and things like that. I heard that and just went out. Then I experienced
the Holy Spirit said, “Go back, go back.” So I went back and went to him and I talked
to him about God and Jesus. I could feel he was very interested in the supernatural
but he was not interested in Jesus. He was not interested in Christianity but I just
talked a little with him and gave him my card. Two days ago he called me and said, “Torben,
I need to talk to you, you met me one month ago and I’ve been thinking about that. And
I believe you were sent by God because three days before you came I shouted, -God if
you are there send somebody to me, help me I’m sick.- Then you came.” He said that
he is not so much into this but there was something that was different so he wanted
to meet with me. Tomorrow I am going to meet with him. He also said, “I have a lot
of companies, I drive a big car, I have a lot of money but I’m not happy.” -No, you
are not happy.- He needs life, he had a lot of supernatural experiences but
nothing compared to what we experience. So when I go to him I’m just going to share
some testimonies and he will see that what we are coming with is more than just going to a
church and being a member. Jesus came with life. One of the misunderstandings when it comes
to the Holy Spirit is that there is a difference between the experience the Holy
Spirit and getting baptized with the Holy Spirit. I know many Christians who have repented
toward God and have gotten a supernatural experience by that, you experience the new heart when
you repent. They are like, “Woo, now I have the Holy Spirit!” Yes, the Holy Spirit
is in repentance, the Holy Spirit also works in baptism in water. But you still need
to get baptized with the Holy Spirit. So there is a difference between coming to faith by
the Holy Spirit. Nobody can come to God unless the Holy Spirit draws them. There is a difference
between coming to faith by the Holy Spirit and getting baptized with the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus was here on earth He spoke about repentance. But there was something He could
not do. The new life was still not started. But after the cross, something broke -the
sin was put on Him- so we now could come in and get a relationship with God by Jesus
Christ. And when He rose up again He came to His disciples in John 20:22 and He said, “As
the father has sent Me I send you, receive the Holy Spirit.” And He blew on them. I
believe they got born again -the new birth- the same way we experience it after the cross,
they received the Holy Spirit. But He still says to those same people who
received the Holy Spirit. He told them to wait in the city until they got baptized with the Holy Spirit. So there
is a difference between getting saved or coming to faith by the Holy Spirit and getting baptized with the Holy Spirit. I see that many have misunderstood that;
they believe they have everything. Because they had a spiritual experience. If
we look at Jesus: always look at Jesus, the Holy Spirit was not only in Jesus baptism
with the Holy Spirit. Jesus was also conceived by the Holy Spirit; He got conceived by the
Holy Spirit. The same way we need to get born again by the Holy Spirit. He got them baptized
with the Holy Spirit, we also need to get baptized with the Holy Spirit. He matured, He experienced
wisdom and revelation by the Holy Spirit, the same way we should. He overcame temptation
by the Holy Spirit, the same way we should overcome temptation. He was anointed
by the Spirit to service, the same way as we when we receive the Holy Spirit.
He was filled by the Spirit, walked in obedience towards God by the Holy Spirit. He saw death
in their eyes without fear by the Holy Spirit, the same way as us. He healed by the Spirit.
Jesus was raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit, the same way we are raised up to
a new life. So baptism in the Holy Spirit is much more than speaking in
tongues, this is also the sign. It is much more than speaking in tongues. The Holy
Spirit is our helper. Jesus spoke about what would happened when He would go away, He
would send the Holy Spirit. He used the word the helper for the Spirit, the helper would come
to you, He will point to me. He will reveal the truth to you, He will witness about me
and reveal the truth and the truth will set you free. He will witness about me. So the
Holy Spirit is a part of everything. In the book of Acts you read that the Holy Spirit
spoke to the people, they got visions and the Holy Spirit spoke again. In one place you read
that it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and us. So it’s not only with the first Christians
it seems good to them. No, it seems good to the Holy Spirit and to us. You read
about that in the book of Acts 15:28. So the Holy Spirit was a part of the first church.
But during the Catholic church we got a big church system and the Holy Spirit–
swiiis…So we need to go back to the Word of God and we need not only to repent
toward God, to be baptized to Jesus Christ we also need to be baptized with the Holy Spirit and
we need to live in this life; live by the Holy Spirit. And I want to
pray now for this is such an important teaching and because we have so
much fear and so many glasses on when it comes to the Holy Spirit. We need God to help
us to get the glasses off. God I pray for this teaching. God I pray help me to share
this word and I pray for each person who is receiving this that this is going to be revelation
for them. You are going to help them come out of their fear. Everything they have come into
in religion, everything that came in through false doctrine and You are going to open their
eyes to see what the Word is really saying. So they can come in and get baptized with
the Holy Spirit and live the life we read about in your Word. The life we read about
in the book of Acts. And help them also to understand that they are also called to go
out and lay hands on and baptize other people with the Holy Spirit. So help me to share
this word in the name of Jesus, amen. When we talk about the Holy Spirit I want to
start with a little background about this. Why do I use the word baptize with the Holy
Spirit? Some people have a problem with that because the Bible says there is only one baptism.
There is the baptism, in Matthew; baptism in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There is only
one baptism, the Christian baptism. But I use the word baptism with the Holy Spirit because
Jesus used it and John used it. The first time we hear about the Holy Spirit, we hear
about baptism with the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist he says in Matthew 3. “I baptize
you with water to repentance but after me comes one who is more powerful than I whose
sandals I am not worthy to carry. He (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and
fire.” So Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. I will not use a lot of
theology out of what baptism with fire is. Somebody says, “Hey we also have to get
baptized with the Holy Spirit and together we have to have a baptism of fire.” I don’t
see that, I don’t see a lot where they say it is one thing and another. I believe the
Holy Spirit and fire because fire is cleansing us, fire getting united with God. Getting united
with the fire of God you cannot stop telling people about God. So it was what John said
about Jesus. Jesus then lived His life here on earth and after He rose again He
came to His disciples. You read in Acts 1, that He came to His disciples. There
were many proofs that He was alive. And He gave them a commandment, “Do not leave Jerusalem but
wait for the gift My Father promised.” What gift? That gift He talked about, “John baptized
with water but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So Jesus
is saying the same words. He said later, “You will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses.”
So John was talking about it. Jesus who would come after him would baptize
with the Holy Spirit. When Jesus rose up again He came to His disciples, He had blown
on them and said to some of them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” At the same time He said, “Wait
in the city until you have been baptized with the Holy Spirit.” And after He rose up again
He came and said, “In a few days you will get baptized with the Holy Spirit.” And you
read how that happened, what Jesus said on Pentecost in Acts 2. They were
together and the Holy Spirit came over them. When the Holy Spirit came over them
Peter stood up on Pentecost and he spoke about a prophesy many years before from a guy called
Joel and he said, “This was spoken by the prophet Joel, “In the last days God said, ‘I will pour
out my Spirit upon all people your sons and daughters will prophesy your young men shall
see visions your old men shall dream dreams and my servants both men and women I will
pour out my Spirit in those days and they will prophesy.'” What happened on Pentecost
was something that was prophesied about many years before. It was a part of the new covenant
like we read last time when we talked about Ezekiel and other prophets like Jeremiah, “There
will come a new time when God will give a new heart and put a new Spirit within you.”
It was what they prophesied there. This was when the Holy Spirit came, not when repentance,
baptism in water and the cross happened. But when the Holy Spirit was poured
out on people Peter said that what is happening right now is what was prophesied
by Joel and others; that God would pour out of his Spirit on all people. Then he spoke
“They will prophesy, they will see visions, they will dream dreams.” In the old covenant
before that happened we had the prophet who could hear from God who could prophesy. In the
old covenant we have the priest who could go in in the presence of God but now, God
did something new He poured out His Spirit on all people. Does all people mean every sinner?
No, here all people means everybody who receives. He will pour out his Spirit on all people
and they will prophesy they will see visions and they will dream dreams, and they will also
do other things they will speak in tongues, heal the sick and do other things. Our
problem is we put things in a box We think it should be exactly like there, so daughters
prophesy, young men have visions, old men dream dreams. I have got many dreams from
God. Does that mean I am an old man? If you ask my kids they will say, “Yes daddy you are
old but I’m 37 years old now. I have had dreams for many years and I get visions; I also prophesy.
So when Peter said this, it was not to put it in a box; OK, you should have vision or
if you are older you should dream dreams or if you are younger you should prophesy.
No, it’s not like that but we put everything in boxes. He just wanted to confirm that the
Spirit of God is going to be poured out on all people. Because just before he said this,
in talking about Joel, he said, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
or -you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit-. “For this promise is unto you and to your children
and all that are a far away even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” What promise
is Peter talking about? The promise of the Holy Spirit. So when Peter stood up
on Pentecost he said, “Repent be baptized [in water] and you will receive the Holy Spirit.”
that God has promised by the prophet Joel and other prophets, that He in the end days
will pour His Spirit out on all people. All people who repent and get baptized will receive
the Holy Spirit. Everybody who comes to God will receive the Holy Spirit and they will
prophesy, have visions, have dreams, heal the sick, cast out demons and live this new life.
So when the Holy Spirit got poured out on Pentecost, when people got baptized with the Holy
Spirit. It was the fulfilling of the prophesy that God spoke through Joel and to other
people, that God would create something new where He would give us His Spirit in our hearts.
And we will live the new life free from sin. We will prophesy, we will see
visions and we will dream dreams. We will live the new life by the Spirit.
He said this promise about the Holy Spirit and salvation is for you and everybody God
will call upon in the future; you and your children and your children’s children. But
now we have people in the church saying, “No, no, no, no, no everything has ceased.” Then
they take Corinthians 13 where it talks about that one day speaking in tongues and those
things would cease. Yes, it will one day. One day we are going to see Him face to face.
Corinthians is saying we are going to see Jesus as He is, and then we don’t need anybody
to heal the sick because we have Him. Everybody is going to be healed, we won’t need to speak in
tongues to get more knowledge and understanding and be filled up with the Spirit because we
will have Him. We won’t need to prophesy and get Him to speak to us because we will have
Him. One day we will have Jesus and we will stand in front of Him. Everything is going
to be good and there we will see him face to face. But some people say that the day
when we got the Bible we don’t need this. We only need the Word. And this is religion,
we take one verse out of context and say that everything has ceased, everything has stopped
by the apostles. But this is the promise, this is the promise of salvation, this is the promise
of the Holy Spirit, this promise is to you and your children and everybody God is calling
upon. That God will pour out His Spirit on all flesh so they will prophesy, have visions, prophesy,
speak in tongues, dream dreams, heal the sick. You cannot say, “OK, we want only this
part, we want only the salvation and we don’t want this. This is religion!
For the first church to get baptized with the Holy Spirit was the promise, was what God
had promised; was the fulfilling of the Word that was prophesied many years before through
the prophet Joel, the prophet Ezekiel He would give us a new Spirit within and so on
and so on. So the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not something extra, as if you just
want to get baptized in a ministry saying, “But we are all saved and we don’t need that.”
I’m sorry, I don’t see that in my Bible. It is so wrong if you have understood that was
what the first church was talking about. And if you don’t get this life, I guarantee your
life is never going to look like we read in the book of Acts. We need to ask ourselves
what do we want to build on? Do we want to look like the Catholic Church? The Reformed
church? The Baptist church? The Methodist church? Or do we want to live with Jesus the
same way we read in the Bible in the book of Acts? This is the Word
because if you say I want to build on the Catholic church, OK. But it
will look like this. If you said the Lutheran church it would look like this. If you said
the Baptist church it would look like different if you said the Pentecostal church it would
look different. And why do you say Pentecostal church, Torben because they have the Holy
Spirit? To be honest many Pentecostal churches are not Pentecostal any more. It’s like
every other one, the Spirit has died out. We need to live by the Spirit in everyday life.
OK, the Holy Spirit also has something to do with sin. Because Jesus came to save us from
our sins and we need the Holy Spirit to live the holy life. We need to get baptized and
live by the Spirit to live the holy life. Romans 8 is talking about somebody who is
living by the Spirit, who has received the Holy Spirit and who is living by the Spirit.
It’s like if I say to you, you will not think of an elephant, don’t think of an
elephant, stop thinking of an elephant. Now you are thinking of an elephant and I said
you are not allowed to think of an elephant but you are doing it right now. You didn’t
do it two minutes ago but when I said you are not allowed to think of an elephant then
you started to do it. Many Christians have been told all the time what they are not allowed
to do and they tried to focus on what they are not allowed to do instead of focusing on
the new life. Because when you are getting on fire, when you are united with God by the
Holy Spirit and you live this life, then you are focused on the new life. You are living
the new life and it is an exciting life being led by the Spirit. And there is so much more
to focus on. So you don’t think of sin because you are filled up with other things. But
many don’t have the spiritual life and they need something instead of sin, something
new, they are fighting and struggling all the time with sin. Those people need to get
baptized with the Holy Spirit, need to be led by the Spirit and then they are so filled
up with God and the Holy Spirit that they don’t have time to look back. They don’t
have time to think of an elephant or think of sin. Read Romans 8:12-16. “Brothers we
are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if you live after the flesh
you will die:” Then the Bible says, “but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the
body you shall live.” So how do we put to death the deeds of the body? We do it by the Spirit.
“If we walk by the Spirit we are not under the law for as many are led by the Spirit of
God these are sons of God for you received not the Spirit of bondage again unto fear but
you received the Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba father the Spirit himself beareth
witness with our Spirit that we are the children of God.” “Abba father” the Spirit cries out.
If you look, it is like crying out when you get filled with the Holy Spirit; you get
filled up and something comes out of you. If you go to the Greek and to the text, it is
like a Spirit shouts “Abba father”. We have seen people get baptized with the Holy Spirit. “Abba
father” start to praise God. For in one Spirit we were all baptized. We are
baptized in one Spirit into one body. So the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the revealing,
the fulfilling of the prophesy that came many years ago. And Ephesians 1 is saying the Holy
Spirit is the guarantee of our inheritance we are going to receive one day. So when we
receive the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit is our guarantee the Holy Spirit is the
last thing of this, if we repent, if we get baptized in water we will receive the
promise that was given many years ago that God would pour out His Holy Spirit on all
flesh. So that baptism with the Holy Spirit is not a Pentecostal thing. It’s not only
for Pentecostal people the baptism with the Holy Spirit has to do with the promise God
has given us: the prophesy, the new covenant, the new covenant, When Peter stood up he said,
“What is happening here is what has been prophesied many years ago; a new covenant that
God will save His people He will pour His Spirit out on all flesh. And the people heard
that and they repented and they got saved by repentance, baptized in water and of course
they received the Holy Spirit. So to receive the Holy Spirit in the first church was normal.
It was a part of it and it should be the same today. I’ve seen hundreds of people
receive the Holy Spirit. Often when I meet people I ask them,
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit?” when you came to faith
and they say, “No”. And then I pray for them and they received
the Holy Spirit and they get baptized with the Holy Spirit. And we need to understand
that this is what the Word is saying and you have to ask yourself what do I want to build on?
Do I want to build on my religious traditions or what the Word is saying? And like many
other things here you see the problem with our boxes today because they are not building on
the Word they are building on a wrong foundation and many people are deceived today. That is
why a teaching like this is going to provoke you. But it is so clear baptism with the
Holy Spirit was prophesied many years ago. Now we are going to go through the book of
Acts and see how it happened. The first time you see in Acts that the Holy Spirit came upon
them was on Pentecost. “When the day of Pentecost came there were 120 people gathered
all together in one place and all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” All of them. I want to take this
and show there were 120 people gathered. How many out of those 120 people were filled with
the Holy Spirit and started to speak in other tongues? All of them, everyone. So to be baptized
with the Holy Spirit this promise is for all people. They all got filled with the Holy
Spirit, a hundred and twenty people, and all three thousand got filled. And I believe
that all five thousand got filled. All got baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit
in the first church because it should be like that. But we have a doctrine today that
says maybe it’s only for a few people and it is not for me, but for other people.
‘No’ this is a promise for all people. On Pentecost they all started to speak in
tongues. Tongues is a language and there are different kinds of speaking languages, there
are different kinds of speaking in tongues. I speak in tongues, I speak English
now, but my language is Danish. There is also a supernatural language that they spoke
on Pentecost which they spoke. And people from other countries normally could not speak
their language they could understand what they were saying. This is also something
happening today. I have heard many testimonies of people who have received a language they
did not know. Suddenly they know it. Or they experienced the Holy Spirit came over them and
they started to speak. And when they started to speak they spoke in tongues but the people
from other countries heard what they were saying. And when they came to them afterwards
to start to ask them what they were saying they didn’t understand their language. So
they didn’t know that those people understood them. And I also, not many
weeks ago, prayed for a woman who got baptized with the Holy Spirit.
She started to speak in the personal tongues. Afterwards she started to worship God, she
start to speak in another language and there came some words out of her, I don’t
know if it was just there or if it was to continue but I want to say that on Pentecost
the focus there was the people from other countries understood what they were saying.
I believe also that, of course, they got the personal speaking in tongues where you don’t
speak to man but to God. I am going to explain that later and see
what the Bible says about that. But what I want to focus on there is that
everyone received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The next time we read about it
in detail is happening in Acts chapter 8 with Philip. I want to say something first
because Philip went first to Samaria. Philip was just going to help with the
tables, with practical things. But because of persecution he was thrown into a revival.
He went to Samaria and many people got healed through him and a lot of things happened.
People came to faith and got baptized in water. I believe Philip was not perfect also,
he didn’t know everything and he was just going to help with the tables and suddenly
he was in a revival so he didn’t pray for them. He didn’t do that, that didn’t mean
it had to be an apostle who prays for people to get filled with the Holy Spirit. For example
Paul, he got filled with the Holy Spirit by a guy called Ananias, he was just a disciple.
But again there are people who build doctrines out of what they think the Bible is saying.
A revival happened but they had not there received the Holy Spirit. So the apostles
went there. “When they arrived they prayed for the new believers that they might receive
the Holy Spirit.” This is the same way I do it today. I go many places where there are
new believers, but where the old Christians have not prayed for them for baptism in the
Holy Spirit because they didn’t know how it was working or maybe they have not
received it. But they have repented and have been baptized in water, but they have not
received it. So when I come I always ask, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit?” If not,
I do the same as the apostles. You don’t have to be an apostle to pray
for people. So here they prayed for them “that they might receive the Holy
Spirit because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them. They had simply
been baptized in the name of Jesus.” So they went to those people who were believers and
had repentance and baptism in water but they had not yet received the baptism of the Holy
Spirit. This also shows that to repent and get baptized in water is not the same as receiving
the Holy Spirit. No, it is three different experiences, you get baptized in water and
you repent toward God; it can be over a period, maybe you can’t say exactly the right
moment it happened. But you know the right moment you got baptized in water because
this is not over a period, it happened right there. The same thing with the baptism of
the Holy Spirit it is also something that happened like that. I want to
ask here, how did the apostles know that those people who were there had
not yet received the Holy Spirit? How did they know that they were not baptized with
the Holy Spirit? Because there is always a sign when people get baptized with the Holy
Spirit. There is always a sign. And that is why they always know they have not received it.
And there they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. What is the
sign? We don’t read right there what the sign was. We read in the book of Acts everybody
started to speak new languages. Maybe it was the tongues where people understood them, we
don’t know exactly. Or it was a new language which we don’t know. But there we don’t
read what happened but we read there was a sign. Some people would say, yes the sign
is the repentance and they live a Holy Life. No, it was not the sign there.
because if the sign that they had received the Holy Spirit was repentance and holy life
then they would have to wait a month or two to see that sign. But here when they laid
their hands on them they received the Holy Spirit in the second they laid their hands
on them not two month later. They could not see it happen that second. There was a
guy named Simon, he saw this. The Bible says when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit
was given at the laying on of the apostles hands he offered the money. He said give me
also this ability, that everybody on whom I lay my hands, may receive the Holy Spirit.
So he understood that those people received the Holy Spirit at the moment the apostles
laid their hands on them. And he knew also that this was not only about the apostles but
everybody can do it so he said, “I also want that ability so that everyone I lay my hands
on will receive the Holy Spirit.” The problem was that he could not get the Holy Spirit
and receive that, his problem was that his heart was not right with God. Because you cannot
buy God’s gift with money, you receive the Holy Spirit for free. Jesus also one
time said that -a gift you have received for nothing you shall give for nothing. I
believe He also talked about the Holy Spirit that was going to come later; that we
receive the Holy Spirit for nothing. We don’t pay money for Him, we give the Holy
Spirit. How do we give the Holy Spirit? By laying on of hands. So in the second they
laid on their hands they received the Holy Spirit. Do we believe, “Jesus the same yesterday,
today and forever?” We say yes. Is the Holy Spirit the same yesterday, today and forever?
Yes. Should people again receive the Holy Spirit when we lay the hands on them?
Yes, do people receive the Holy Spirit when we lay the hands on them? Yes. Do they do
that every time we lay the hands on them? Yes, yes they do, if they understand what
the gospel is all about, if they have repented and are ready to do it. If we understand
what it is all about we pray for them and do it. Is there always a sign? Yes. So
just because you don’t see that in your church, maybe, because you don’t live this
life, doesn’t mean this isn’t the truth. For me, the first time I prayed for somebody
to get baptized with the Holy Spirit… I’ve been a Christian maybe six years and it happened
one time. And then maybe after ten people I prayed for, it to happen one more time.
I pray for a lot of people and it happens. Sometimes it happened, sometimes it didn’t.
But when I started to understand what the Word was saying: that we were called to baptize
people not only I water, but the Holy Spirit. And it happens by laying on of hands and
this promise is for everyone, everyone. I started to pray for people in faith, laying
hands and expecting it was going to happen, what happened was that everyone
got baptized with the Holy Spirit. And I can say it now, it was not easy in the
beginning, it was not like that but last year I believed everybody I have had time
with to sit down to explain it got baptized with the Holy Spirit. I expect it to happen.
I expect people not only to repent, not only to get baptized in water but I expect them
to get baptized with the Holy Spirit and start to speak in other tongues. They start
to speak in other languages, they start to prophesy, they start to worship God, they cry.
There is a sign that those people get baptized with the Holy Spirit. It should be so natural
for every one of us, but religious glasses, religion, tradition, church culture has
put the Word of God out of power. So today there are many people who don’t see this
happen every time as a natural thing. Because they don’t have this experience, they
build a theology out of it. And say -It has ceased, it is something that ceased with the
apostles. Or they say -No, it’s not for everybody. Or -No, no, you get baptized with the Holy
Spirit when you get baptized in water and there are no signs, not everybody speaks
in tongues. And there are a lot of things about everybody speaking in tongues.
I’m going to explain that later. So again we need to go back to the simple
thing we read about in the book of Acts. OK, chapter 10: there Peter went to
Cornelius and his house, they were not Jews and in Peter’s mind-set, they were
still learning all the time, also through the book of Acts, I don’t want to say that
they were perfect all the time. Because if they were perfect, Philip would have just prayed
for them and they had received the Holy Spirit. So remember they were also new and they
were learning. In Acts chapter 10, Peter was led by the Holy Spirit to Cornelius house.
Peter didn’t think with his Jewish theology, that those non-Jews could receive the Holy
Spirit. He said that this promise was for everybody. He said it, but he did not understand
it. But later he got a strong experience in the house of Cornelius.
Because while he was still speaking, and they were gentiles. “While Peter
was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. For they
heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. So he ordered that they be baptized
in the name of Jesus.” Because now they had received the Holy Spirit like they
had, so what hindered them from being baptized to Jesus Christ? And the next time we read
that the Holy Spirit come over people is in Acts chapter 19. We will
look at that a little later. When Paul came to Ephesus. And he asked them if
they had received the Holy Spirit and they had not. So when he heard that “…they were
baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy
Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were
about twelve men in all.” So these are the places in the Bible you read
in more details about how people received the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit came over
all 120 people there. This promise is for all people. They laid their hands on those
people there who received. And this was come over all that heard the message in chapter 10. And
in chapter 19 it was all who were gathered, and there were twelve men. So the promise
of the Holy Spirit is for all people. There is always sign, they spoke in
tongues in Acts chapter 2. They spoke in other languages so people from other languages
understood it. But I also believe in personal tongues and other languages. In Acts
8 there was a sign you don’t read about but it was a sign. In chapter 10 they spoke
in tongues and praised God. In chapter 19 they spoke in tongues and prophesied. So there was
one thing that was common for everybody, it was that they spoke in tongues. Sometimes
they spoke in tongues and I believe people understood it, it was something
extra there. And there they spoke in tongues and praised God. And there they
spoke in tongues and prophesied. So it’s like when you get filled up. I have a glass
here it’s not totally filled. If I take more water and fill the glass up, when it is
filled it is going to run over. And I believe from our innermost being it is going to come
out as living water. When we receive the Holy Spirit, get baptized with the Holy Spirit,
the Holy Spirit is going to come over us and fill us up and when we are filled up in
our innermost being it’s going to come out. So when we are filled it is
coming out of our mouth. By speaking in tongues, the person speaking
in tongues in another language, speaking in tongues praising God, speaking in tongues
prophesying. Can you see it? This is what the Bible says. There is always a sign when
people get baptized with the Holy Spirit. But I believe there is a lot of misunderstanding
because in Corinthians there is one verse where, “Not everybody speaks in tongues.” But
you have to understand that there are different kinds of speaking in tongues. For example, at
Pentecost they spoke in tongues and one thing you read there you don’t read in another
place. You read that there people from other countries, nations with other languages
understood what they were saying. And they were so shocked and amazed because they understood
everything they were saying. But in Corinthians 14:2 Paul is talking about speaking in tongues.
He said, “Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one
understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.” So he says everybody who speaks in tongues
speaks not to man but to God because nobody understands him, because they speak mysteries to
God. But what he is saying here is so opposite to what we read here. Here they spoke in tongues
and everybody understood them. Here we read when you speak in tongues nobody understands you
because you speak mysteries to God. How can Paul here say that nobody understands when you
speak in tongues because you speak mysteries, there you read that everybody understood them?
Because there is different kinds of speaking in tongues. The Bible says in Corinthians
that there are different kinds of tongues. There are four I know. I speak now English,
or I try to speak English, my language is Danish. So I am much better to speak Danish
than I am to speak English but I speak a language, I got that language when I was born many years
ago from my mother- when I came out, I was born into the physical world. I learned a language and
could speak. I needed to learn it, but I could speak. There is the personal speaking in
tongues -…- where I speak mysteries to God that you don’t understand. No man understands
what I am saying, it is between me and God. This is my tongues: a personal speaking in
tongues. This is for everybody, this is what you get when baptized with the Holy Spirit.
That is personal tongues. Every other gift is to equip the church. Do you have the
gift of healing? Use it to equip the church: to help the church. It’s not for you only,
it is for other people. But when we talk about speaking in tongues, the personal
gift, it is the only gift just for you; not for other people. And that is why Paul says
when you are together with other people use that tongues to get a prophesy, to get a
revelation. Use that tongues to give something to equip other people also, this is what
he is saying in 1 Corinthians 12 and 14. There is also another
speaking in tongues that you saw on Pentecost where people get a physical
language that people understand what they are saying. Or they speak in tongues- for them:
they think they are speaking in tongues. But- for the people who hear it: they understand it. I
know a friend who got saved while he was in Africa. And there was an African woman who started
to speak in fluent Danish to him and he was shocked. So he went to talk with her because
he told her about Jesus. But when he went to talk with her she was shocked because she
didn’t speak Danish and didn’t know anything about Denmark or where Denmark was. He heard
her speak Danish but she was just speaking in tongues, and through that he came to God.
So there is that speaking in tongues where we are not talking about the personal
tongues but we are talking about the tongues where other people understand
them. And there is tongues also where we can say you physically get a language, where
we have heard of people who are missionaries in a country where people do not speak their
language and God came over them and they learned in a few hours or immediately or something
like that. We hear about that this is also happening. So there are
different kinds of speaking in tongues. Our problem is that we take one
verse, -it is not everybody who is speaking in tongues- and say that
about every kind of tongues. It is not everybody who speaks different languages.
This is not something we can just do, I cannot pray for someone who wants to go to China
and just pray for him and he speaks Chinese. No, I cannot do that, I cannot give
him that gift, this is up to God. But I can give him the Holy Spirit so he can get
the personal speaking in tongues. Paul is talking about personal tongues and
he said, “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.” I believe
that speaking in tongues was one of the secrets behind Paul’s strong life with God. So next
time I am going to talk about the Holy Spirit. I am going to focus on some of the things
Paul experienced. But the secret behind Paul’s life was he spoke a lot in tongues, and this
is also what I do, I speak a lot in tongues, this is what I encourage everybody to
do. I just want to say that to talk about Corinthians. I don’t want to go through
the whole letter I just want to explain chapter 14. You can read it later. There is
a lot of misunderstanding about Corinthians. The misunderstanding is that Paul wrote
the letter to the church of Corinth. That was a church who Paul says is so keen
on the gift. They are using the gift all the time and he wrote the letter to them
not to a Lutheran church, not to a Catholic church, not to a Methodist church, not to
a Baptist church. He wrote the letter to those people in Corinth he said what
he said. If Paul were writing to another church he would say something different.
And this is where we often get lost in theology. We have to understand who the letter is from
and who the letter is to and why he is writing what he is writing? Paul wrote
to that church who are speaking in tongues all the time. When they are
together they just -…- speak in tongues. Paul said that when I come to you, it’s
better to speak five words so people can get equipped by it than a thousand words in tongues.
If you just start to speak in tongues now, people don’t understand it. He also said
that if you speak in tongues and there comes some people in who is a non-believer
who doesn’t know what is happening they will say you are all crazy. And we use that today
and say, -Look, we should not speak in tongues when we are together. No, no. Paul also said
you can speak to God, you and God and then you can get a revelation and you can get something
you can share. But we have so misunderstood what Paul is saying, we take Paul’s letter to
the Corinthians and use it against the Word of God to say it is not everybody who speaks
in tongues. And we don’t have to speak in tongues when we are together. People ask
me, “Torben do you speak in tongues when you are together with other believers?” I say
“Yes I do.” -they reply- “But you are unbiblical then.” I reply, “No I am not.” But they
say the Bible says you should not speak in tongues. No, no… I say, The Bible says that
we all stand up and speak in tongues and this is what we are doing. People will think we
are crazy so when we are together as believers, we are together with family. There are no
unbelievers there, so we are together knowing what speaking in tongues is. And we just
speak in tongues, it is very natural. And we speak -…- towards… Me and God are speaking.
I am praying in Danish also. I can do it, me and God. But then when I pray sometimes…
I don’t pray loud, so everybody can hear everything and they cannot hear what they themselves
are praying. I just pray, me and God -…- and then I get a revelation and I share with the
others. Then I get a vision and then I share it. So I speak in tongues it helps me to get the
revelation, to get the prophesy, to understand what God is saying. So use speaking in tongues.
When Paul is saying there comes an unbeliever in, they prophesy over him. Because if everybody
prophesies over him he would see that God is there. So there is an order in that. Let me
explain. I have been in a meeting where many people are standing speaking in tongues -…-
and using that to get a revelation. If someone gets a vision, they are very loud to everybody
to share the vision. But I don’t speak loudly in tongues I just speak, me and God, -…-
I am not afraid, it doesn’t matter if those beside me see that I am speaking in tongues
because they are also speaking in tongues. And then when we get a vision we share loudly.
Then sometimes there is somebody who stands up and who comes with a loud tongues, -…- and
it is different, so then everybody is being quiet. And they do that because this is the
tongues that has to be interpreted. There was a man one time who got it and when he
gave this tongue I knew it was me who had to interpret it. So when he was finished with
that I began to speak in Danish so everybody understood what God just spoke to this man.
And sometimes there comes an unbeliever in who is unlearned about speaking in tongues.
We explain what speaking in tongues is so he understands it and now he is not ignorant
any more. Now he knows what it is all about and speaking in tongues
becomes a sign for him. So if you understand those things, how they
work, that sometimes it is another language. Sometimes it is personal tongues you can
use to get a revelation so everybody will understand it. Sometimes it is one or two
at a time, where it is the tongues that have to be interpreted. Then only do it when there
is somebody who can give the interpretation. If you understand all of those things and
understand how this is working in everyday life. Also understand that the first church
was not a church like the one we have today. They were small house churches where the brothers,
Christians, were together and sometimes they just spoke in tongues loud and were not afraid
of it but when there came in an unbeliever or unlearned about it, they needed
to stop and talk to him about it. If you understand all of this and then read
Corinthians you will understand it in a new way. Suddenly you will see what it is all about,
but if you are in a Lutheran background, a Catholic background, a Reformed background and
you read Corinthians you will never understand what Paul is saying, this is almost what he is
saying here. And Paul’s letter: 1 Corinthians 13, has been misunderstood. This is also
what Peter is saying, he is talking about Paul in 2nd Peter 3:16. He says,
“His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and
unstable people distort, as they do the other scriptures, to their own destruction.” So when
we talk about Corinthians and talk about Paul’s letter, Peter is saying that there is something
in Paul’s letter that is hard to understand. Which ignorant and unstable people misunderstand.
You are ignorant and unable to understand what Paul is saying if you don’t live it. If
you don’t live this life you do not understand it. Then you will build a theology out of it.
But if when you gather together and somebody gets a vision, somebody prophesies, somebody
who comes with a loud tongues and somebody comes with an interpretation of the tongues.
If you experience that life then you will not have a problem with what Paul is saying.
But if you don’t have this life then you will build a theology out of it and then you
will get lost, and you will say, “No it’s not for everybody. No,it should be like
this, no, it should be like this. But if you really want to build on Corinthians then you
need to prophesy every time an unbeliever comes in, so they will see God is there and
they will fall on their knees and worship God. But, do you do that? No, but you
just use the scripture to say, “No, it is not like that.” So again if you had
not experienced that, it is personal speaking in tongues where you can do it. And also when
you are together with others you can speak in tongues, you and God; personal speaking
in tongues. But don’t stand at the pulpit in front of every other and just speak loud
and do this as the only thing you do because then you are not equipping the other people.
But you can speak in tongues -…- and then you can use it together with prophesy and something
else and you can equip the other people. If you have not experienced the personal speaking
in tongues, if you have not experienced sometimes there comes big loud speaking in tongues where
everybody becomes quiet and somebody has to come with the interpretation of the tongues; if
you don’t understand that there is different kinds of gifts, you will misunderstand what
Paul is saying. And this is the problem that most people who get lost in Paul’s letter,
get lost because they are ignorant when it comes to the spiritual gifts. But when you first
live it, it is like every other thing, if you first live the life and afterwards read theology,
read the Word, it would become so much more real, because now you understand
what it is all about. But today, sadly enough, there are people who
take one thing out of context because they are ignorant. They are unable to understand
it because they are not baptized with the Holy Spirit. They don’t live that life and
then they take something out and say that speaking in tongues is not for everybody.
That there is no sign. That the baptism with the Holy Spirit is not something you need. If
you have repented and were baptized in water you have everything. OK, I have to finish up.
I want to finish up with some questions. OK, just to review what I have talked about until
now. Repentance and baptism in water and the Holy Spirit, we need those three things. Get
baptized with the Holy Spirit. Getting baptized with the Holy Spirit was the fulfilling of
the prophesy of Joel given many years ago and this is for everyone and when you get
baptized with the Holy Spirit you can experience prophesy, see a vision and dreams and the
supernatural life. There are some people who have healed the sick without being baptized
with the Holy Spirit. You can do that because healing the sick has something to do with
faith. But when you then first experience the baptism with the Holy Spirit and later it becomes
so much more stronger. We see with the baptism with the Holy Spirit there is always a sign,
that you have received it, there is always a sign that people around you see that you
have received it, and this is for everybody. OK, how do I do it? If we go to Acts
19 you can read that Paul went to Ephesus and Paul went there and he asked the
disciples, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” He asked, did you
get baptized with the Holy Spirit? “Did you get baptized with the Holy
Spirit when you started to believe?” They said no they had not heard about
it. So Paul started to explain what it is all about and then he baptized them
in water and he laid his hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit, they
got baptized with the Holy Spirit. What I often do today when I meet people I
ask them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you came to faith?” Last Friday I met
a young guy and his brother. When I met him I asked him, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit
when you came to faith? Did you get baptized with the Holy Spirit?” He said, “No” —
“You don’t speak in tongues?” — “No” — “Baptized in water?” — “Yes” So he had
repented, he had been baptized in water. But he had not been baptized with the Holy
Spirit. So I asked him, “OK, so do you want the Holy Spirit?” — “No, I don’t want
that and speaking in tongues, it’s not me.” I was shocked! Why did he say
that? Because of religion. If he understood what the Bible was saying and what the Word
was saying he would not have said something like that. So then I had to explain
like Paul did. I had to explain from the beginning what it was all about, like I did
now. So I explained what it was all about. This young guy walked with crutches, so we
went out afterwards and I prayed for him and he got healed and there a lot
of things happened because there was a musician playing who was standing beside
him who saw him get healed. He was smiling and said, “Come to me! Come to me! And we went
to him and he said, “I always have a problem in the knee, can you pray for me?” And I
said to this boy who had just been healed, “Now you pray.” And he prayed for this guy
and he got healed. Then there was another man who was selling newspapers. He saw
that and said, “Come! Come! Come!” We went to him, “I have problem in the back can
you pray for me?” Because he saw what happened and I let this guy pray and he got healed. So
in five minutes he got healed with crutches, he threw the crutches away to walk, and he prayed
for another who got healed, so he was ecstatic. I asked him, “What now, what do you want?” — “I want
the Holy Spirit.” Because now he understood there was so much more. So we went down into
the parking garage where I often pray for people in our city, where there are not many
people. We went down there I took his hands, prayed for him. he got baptized with the Holy
Spirit and started to speak in tongues -…- There he started to speak in tongues. What
did I do then? Then we went home to us and we sat and talked and he was just sitting and
looking and I asked, “How are you?” — “I am filled to overflowing.” He was filled up
by the Holy Spirit and he spoke in tongues. When he spoke in tongues it just came out,
of him and he just said, “Woo, woo it’s not me that is speaking! It is coming from
there!” Later he wrote a letter to his whole family and also to me. He wrote that
from today I have decided to follow Jesus. He told his whole family what had happened.
And he told his friends. And he went to a small group in the state church, he met with
them and told the testimony. He is going to go back again and tell the testimony and
he just wants to follow Jesus from now on. He is totally changed, why did he get changed
that day? Because he got the last thing, he got what he needed. Because I asked him, “Have
you got baptized with the Holy Spirit.” When he said no I didn’t I just wait for God to
do it because God had already commanded me to do it. Yeah but it is God who baptizes.
Yes He does it by laying on of hands, when we lay our hands on God does it. He has
commanded us to go out to baptize people, to go out preach the gospel so they can
repent. We should baptize people so God can set them free from sin. We shall lay our hands
on them so God can baptize them with the Holy Spirit. God needs us to do it and I’ve
seen hundreds of people get baptized with the Holy Spirit, I do it often, why? Because
every time I meet a believer it is often like Acts 19 where there were some people
that believed but they didn’t have the fullness of God so I ask them, did you
receive the Holy Spirit? If they say no (and they want the Holy Spirit) I just lay
my hands on them and they receive the Holy Spirit. And they are on fire and their lives
are getting changed because of that. How do you do it? I take them by the hands get them
to close their eyes and then I say, “Just pray after me, let’s pray. Because if you
pray, God will give you the Spirit. It is what the Word is saying when Jesus came up out
of the water, He prayed and the Holy Spirit came over Him. So I just pray, “God I thank
You because You are going to come with Your Holy Spirit and fill them, baptize them
right now. And when I pray for them like I have, “Holy Spirit now. And I experience
the Holy Spirit coming- sheeewww- and they are like, whewww- and often you can
see it in their eyes, their eyes are going like that. And then I say, “Open your
mouth, speak, Now! Don’t speak English, don’t speak Danish, don’t speak a language
you understand, just speak in tongues.” When they start to speak! -…- It just comes
out of them! And this is what we read, they got filled by the Holy Spirit and they spoke
in tongues. Often people think it comes like this, “OK, if God is going to give me those
tongues He is going to move my mouth.” Sometimes we experience that it comes
strong. It just comes. But very often the Holy Spirit fills them up but they have to speak.
And there has been a lot of misunderstanding about how people receive the Holy Spirit. But
when you try, it is like every other thing, you learn by doing. I was just in
Canada where there was a woman who said, “I know I was filled with the Holy
Spirit, I had an experience where the Holy Spirit came and filled me up when I was
worshipping God, but I don’t speak in tongues.” I said, “OK, if you are filled with the Holy
Spirit then you have the personal speaking in tongues because this is for everybody.”–
“But I don’t have it.” — “Yes, but it is inside of you.” — “But I cannot let it out.” We prayed
and I prayed for her and again she got filled. I saw that she was filled with the Holy
Spirit and I said, “Open your mouth and speak.” She said, “I don’t have it.” and I commanded
her, “Speak!” And she started speaking -yaiyarg-. You could see it was just some words she
was speaking from her head, it was not from her spirit it was from outside here; from
her head. But when she started to break over that fear of speaking, -chea- the Holy Spirit
came over her and she fell down and she was laying down and speaking in tongues. She
was set free from fear. Somebody had told her that speaking in tongues is dangerous;
from Satan so for her to break through there she needed deliverance. Something
had to set her free then she was laying down, speaking in tongues. The day
after she got baptized in water, she gave her testimony and she was free. So
speaking in tongues is for everybody. If I meet people who are not baptized with the Holy
Spirit I share the gospel with them and then I pray for them. If they don’t immediately
receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit with speaking in tongues, I explain to them what
speaking in tongues is. The Spirit has come over them but they have to speak. It is not
that God is going to possess their mouth, they have to speak. But again we don’t want
people to just say a lot of words the whole time. We want people to receive the from the
Spirit so what I often do is… Now maybe you say some words, a few words, maybe 3,4 or 5 words.
And if you feel after saying some words it is coming from your head, you just stop
and I pray more- then you say words again because we don’t want it to come from
outside or the mind, we want it to come from here, the belly, rivers of living water.
But often when they start to speak in faith, -…- suddenly it comes from here
and it breaks through. And when it comes from there they know this is the Holy
Spirit. But if people don’t experience the baptism of the Spirit, I go back to the
first and second steps again, and say, “Have you repented? Tell me about how you repented.
Do you have a new relationship with sin?” So I go back and talk to them about that and
then, if they have that, I take the next step “Are you baptized in water?” Because there are
many people from Lutheran or Reformed background who are not baptized in water. It is not easy
for them to receive the Holy Spirit the same way. Those people often have to bury the
wrong tradition, the wrong teaching and they have to get baptized in water before they
can receive the Holy Spirit. But everybody I have worked with in the last years have received
the Holy Spirit and started to speak in tongues, and some speaking other languages, some prophesying
and some worshipping God. There is always a sign. So how do you
receive the Holy Spirit? One way is by laying on of hands. Hebrews 6 is
talking about that. Repentance from dead works, baptism and laying on of hands is
the foundation of a believer where Hebrews 6 is talking. So laying on of hands is
receiving the Holy Spirit. So if have you not received the Holy Spirit? Find
somebody with the Holy Spirit indwelling and get them to lay their hands on you
so you can get baptized with the Holy Spirit. Have you received the Holy Spirit?
Then you are called to lay hands on other people so they can get baptized with the Holy
Spirit. And like every other thing, you learn by doing. The first time you were unsure but after
you have done it many times you know how this is working. Another way to receive the Holy
Spirit is that you can pray yourself. When Jesus said, “Ask and it shall be given to
you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened unto you.” in Luke 11. In Greek
He says, “Ask: continue asking until it be given to you, seek: continue seeking until
you find, knock: Continue knocking until you it be open for you.” This is what He said
there. He is talking about the Holy Spirit. And later He is saying if a son is asking
for a fish, his father is not giving him a snake or if he asks for an egg he is not going
to give a scorpion. So then He said, “When you give your children good gifts how much more
will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him.” Don’t be afraid, if
you ask for the Holy Spirit God is not going to give you a wrong Spirit, He says that here
in Luke 11. If you ask for the Holy Spirit God will give you the Holy Spirit. But the
Bible says we should be like children, but we complicate things by our religious
doctrine. My wife was 11 years old, she didn’t have a lot of doctrine, but when she was 11
years old her mother got baptized with the Holy Spirit and she also wanted that. So she
went into the room and she asked God, “God, give me the Holy Spirit.” And she got
baptized with the Holy Spirit and she started to speak in tongues and she got changed from
that moment on. Nobody laid their hands on her, she was just like a child asking the
Father, “Give me the Holy Spirit.” and He gave it. This is what we
need, we need to come back to the simple word we read in the Bible, we
should not complicate things. We need to come back and do it in faith, if we see that
what we read in the Word is the same today. I know it is a long
teaching and I want to end now. If you think you don’t have the Holy Spirit,
or I don’t have a strong experience… I want to say that everyone I prayed for now
when they get baptized with the Holy Spirit do they get a strong experience. I didn’t
experience that myself because nobody was there to give it to me. I just started speaking
in tongues slowly and I was not sure if it was really God. But I know it is God now, because
later I got some strong experience. So my experience was not exactly the same as they
were. But now I have it. I want to say that I don’t know where you are, maybe
you are not baptized with the Holy Spirit. Maybe you have received the Holy Spirit but
you don’t speak in tongues because of your glasses and tradition. If you really have
the Holy Spirit you can speak in tongues. No matter where you are I want to say that
this is for everybody. Speaking in tongues is for everybody. Living the book of Acts
is for everybody. If you don’t have the Holy Spirit. Seek, pray, ask, do something and
get it. If you are in a church where nobody does it, go to another church, find some
other people who know about baptism with the Holy Spirit and get them to lay hands on you.
If you don’t have the Holy Spirit just get everybody around you to pray and believe in
faith and you will receive the Holy Spirit. It is so simple and I want to say if you
have a question out of this, I believe there are a lot of questions, because some of
it is new, then come with your questions. Next time I am going to teach, ‘Being led
by the Holy Spirit’. And I want to start next time with answering all the questions
there are on this teaching. This is an easy teaching to teach but it is difficult
because you who are seeing this are from so many different backgrounds and have so many
different traditions. So some of you would have problems with some of it, and some of
you a problem with other things. Some of you it is natural have no problem with any
of what I am saying. I want to take time to answer the questions. So send the questions
to me and I will take time in the next lesson to answer them. Now I’ll just pray a prayer
and my wife is going to sing a song. God, I thank You for this teaching God, I pray
that You are going to open people’s eyes to this teaching and many people are going to
understand what You are saying about baptism with the Holy Spirit. And I believe and pray
that many are going to get baptized with the Holy Spirit through this teaching God, God
when they pray in faith You are going to come with your Holy Spirit over them in the name
of Jesus, God thank You because also them who have it are going to start to be bold
and pray for other people so they will receive the Holy Spirit God, I pray that You
are going come now and work through Lene’s song and everyone is going to be touched
who hears it, in the name of Jesus Amen.

I get very concerned about the theology that God loves us all regardless of how we behave and what we believe.You are right when you say Torben that we are worshipping a God in our own image which is the opposite of the Bible's truth that We are made in GOD'S image.God is HOLY and AWESOME and should be feared and respected.We need to be more like Moses, and take off our shoes in His presence.

This is awesome..i love this, I wish I learned this when I first god saved, I only learn all this so slowly, first accept jesus then wait then get water baptism as a sort of "declaration of faith" then I get baptized with the holy spirit one day… I wish this was preached regularly too all the nations that this is what the gospel is… Praise GOD. and THIS Gospel shall be preached until the end and not the prosperity false gospel in America… Please come to HAWAII if the Lord Leads You and your Family… God Bless

  3. Wow! I thank God for this wonderful teaching… so very wonderful because it is not only shared by a brother in Christ in God's love, but also in the Truth and the great power of the Holy Spirit! I was personally baptized with the Holy Spirit many months after I was saved by repenting of my sins to God and believing in His Son Jesus Christ who died for my sins and the sins of the whole world. I received the baptism with the Holy Spirit after praying a simple prayer to God to receive it and to also speak in tongues. I was in my room and by myself at the time. After praying the prayer to God with faith, I opened my mouth and began to speak and out came another language (not English or any other language I had ever heard), a Holy-Spirit given tongue/spiritual language. This was a very pleasant experience and my life in Jesus Christ has been greatly benefited as a result! Thanks be to God!

  4. If your reading this, we are both blessed, because I can tell you, Torban Sondegaard is the, "Real Deal" & truly a Disciple of Jesus Christ!! Praise God for bringing my Brother in Christ, Torben, his beautiful wife & Son to Long Island, New York, this past week of August 1, 2014.  He graciously spent so much personal time and effort with each of us in attendance over two (2), days preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a simple, light & effective manner, that I know God & Jesus both were shining their smiles & love down upon him.  During those 2 days, so many miraculous events personally unfolded in my life, and many breakthroughs were made.  Listening to the testimonies of others in attendance, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit growing within me like a new seed of life that had been planted within my soul and began was firmly taking root & beginning to sprout.   What great excitement & spiritual high it was & is indeed!!!   8. Hello Torben, i have a question. I have read some teachings that says that if the person laying hands on you have some sins in their life, they can transfer it to you. What do you thing about that? The Bible say in 1 Timothy 5:22 concerning laying hands to ordain Elders in the church: "Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure." . If all believers are to lay hands for people to receive the holy spirit how do you know that the person laying on the hands doesn't have an Issue with pornography in his life? This question is botherering me.
    I have also read that there are false tongues, on even evil tongues? What if that person think he has the right tongues but actually is filled with an evil spirit? Please i need clarification…Thank you for your answers.

Hello I Believe I am dealing with this in my home with my daughter She is fearful, also as I am studying with you she complains of headache and on some occasions I try to lay hands and she pushes me away. She has mild mental retardation. I think I need people to pray in agreement with me please pray

I became a christian through supernatural events and i felt different for a long time in church because i experienced a lot of supernatural stuff in my life that aligned with the bible. I will always love and respect the church but i see there is no power of the Holy Spirit in most of the churches. I call it the religious spirit working in the churches. I am going to keep an open mind about these videos but what i do know is that they say in the bible everyone was of one accord, on spirit and everything u said so far i agree.

  16. Get back to any scripture and not just Acts.  Get back to Gospel books and you read Jesus used tongue to heal a little girl. And an interpretation was given in the Bible/Gospel. Many lie about Jesus spoke in Aramaic.  The Scriptures have never told us that Jesus spoke in Aramaic.

    My wife is found with colon cancer on 11/1/2016, an operation is made on 11/30/2017. On 1/23/2017, the CT scan shows bone T10 place cancer, and the neck may also have cancer cell. And The liver has cancer cells.  I pray for my wife in the name of Jesus in the following day's evenings,
    and one day(1/28/2017) when I put my hand on the you tube screen while a person is praying,
    the prayer suddenly said about the bone issue and say in the next 1-2 days, we will see the doctor, and the doctor will say, no need an operation, because the disease is healed. The screen is just like he is talking to me even the video was made in 2013. I passed these words to my wife, and pray in the Jesus name. The next 1-2 days,  we did see the doctor, and the doctor says, the original CT result is possible not correct, the new bone scan shows T10 is a fake lesion. Your bone at T10 maybe has no problem. But we will MRI further check the bone and make sure if there is cancer cells on the bone.
    In the next days, we keep on praying, and we make repentance toward God for our sin, and baptised by water to Jesus Christ Lord.
    In the evening,  at 10 PM, I suddenly heard a clear ring sound like a long telephone sound, the sound is from God. I know I have been baptised.
    One day morning, I see a bright light switched on and shine on my wife's body. I understand God has given her a new life, she is baptised by Holy Spirit and away from sin.
     In the next day evening, I can speak out with Tongue when I started from saying "hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah". I am very happy and feel confidence, and feel free, and know I am fully baptised by Holy Spirit.
    on 2/13, we go to the hospital again, and see the miracle happens, the new bone check(MRI check) shows she doesn't have bone cancer, the 2 places on the bone are showing black spots but shown no cancer at all. We thanks for the God and Jesus love! The history is changed! This is a miracle!
    We will keep on praying every night. And believe in Jesus Lord is healing her liver cancer.

  22. The thing about tongues it may be controversial but the reason being is that the devil hates it! There are three kinds the personal tongue, the sign tongue,and the interpretation tongue. The first believers when baptized in the holy spirit they all spoke one heavenly language and God made the people around them hear it in their(the peoples) own language; the confusion is where people think they were speaking other languages from the earth which couldn't of happened cause how would each person listening hear his language while they are speaking over each other? They didn't it was all one heavenly language that God made them hear in their own language the wonderful works of God! Now it is possible they could speak other languages but that wasn't the sole purpose it has several purposes 1 to evangelize with people that don't speak your language 2 a sign to unbelievers 3 personal private use to build yourself up(Jude 20 also) like Paul says and for no man understands his personal tongue. (1 cor 14:2&4) also the gifts can be experimented with also Jesus never talked about singing in tongues but Paul did it by experimentation that just showed not every detail is written down the bible is only the beginning! And for those who think tongues are gibberish. First of all language sounds like gibberish. Second the language people get today can sometimes be a heavenly language or the tongues of angels whatever the Lord sees fit and when you hear the word repeated over and over like half way into a word like “re-de-de-de-de-de” that's just them operating in faith saying it over till the spirit gives them more utterance (acts 2:4) it's a process cause they haven't learned so some would just keep going. You learn it cause the spirit teaches you so a new tongue is repeated over and over. And so they would be like “re-de-de-de-spirit gives more ke rabba shata” ect. Just something that happened that the spirit does not every detail is written down but you can figure it out. Not all the miracles are written one said not all the books in the world could contain them. God can do what he wants but he has a way of doing it not every detail is written. Whens the last time you read of some tell an apostle when they taught wheres that in the ot? It never happened! Follow the holy spirit! Paul talks about tongues of angels (1corinth 13:1) and men(earthly languages) and diverse tongues(1cor 12:10&28) for personal use (rom 8:26,Jude 1:20) or evangelical use. Just cause you don't like it don't mean it isn't from God the word says if you ask God for something he wont give you something that's not from him.(Luke 11:11-13) God loves you! Stop judging what u don't understand! God bless and stop dividing the church shouting unbiblical if someone follows the spirit that isn't written down in detail.

When you get saved the Holy Spirit is with you but Jesus said the time would come when the Holy Spirit would be in you as seen in Acts 2

  35. Hi Torben. Enjoying your teachings very much. I speak in tongues and many years ago when come to Christ had a powerful experience in prayer meeting. Is it necessary for me to be baptised in water. My church has different views but I want the whole package in Jesus name.

  36. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit about 5 years ago. My life has totally turned around since then. FOR THE BETTER. FOR GOD. I have been trying to tell everyone that they must get baptized in the Holy Spirit for the coming tribulation. EVERYONE! Get baptized in the Holy Spirit! Find someone whom you know that has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them and ask them to baptize you IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT! Your life will be totally changed for the better. FOR GOD!!

A vast majority of professing christians in the world have never recieved the Holy Spirit.They think they have because they have been taught that they recieved the Holy Spirit when they believed.The Word doesn't say that.It says that God gives the Holy Spirit to those that " obey" and to those that " ask".Obedience is repentance and water baptism.Then we ask until the Lord answers our prayer.When He does we must yield our tongue to the Spirit so that the overflowing Spirit baptism can occur.This baptism is when the believer recieves the Holy Spirit.
