Le kite au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean

-We’re in St-Gédéon,
on Lac Saint-Jean, on the ice, about 200 meters from the shore, it’s a huge playing field,
honestly, it’s huge. Yeah, I’m from Saguenay,
I’m from Chicoutimi, in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean,
and yeah, I’ve done some kiteboarding
all over the world. And, we have a really
awesome region for kiteboarding, as much in winter as in summer. Here in the region we have
amazing bodies of water, we have Lac Saint-Jean,
the Saguenay Fjord, with really, really great
wind conditions. There are a lot of things
to do here, as much as to go for a short run
or do long distances, go to Roberval, Métabetchouan, after that head across
to Saint-Henri-de-Taillon. Progression Kite is
a kiteboarding school… that I set up, soon
it’ll have been 10 years ago, because I was passionate
about kiteboarding, and after having studied in
outdoor adventure tourism, I was looking for
an enjoyable job, that I was passionate about,
then I took instructor training, firstly, in New Brunswick, and
I came back with that training, and there was a demand, there were people who asked me
to teach them to kiteboard, so, to meet the demand,
I said to myself, “Okay, we’re going
to start a school.”, and that’s how
it all got started. Since that time, we’ve grown
slowly, with facilities… There’s a kiteboarding club
in the region too… that is very, has
a lot of members… and is very well organized… Progression Kite comes from the
demand for a sport… that is constantly progressing. -Yeah kiteboarding,
it’s a way of life too, it’s a method of transportation,
and it’s a lifestyle. People who are passionate
about kiteboarding… will really arrange
their schedules… and really look at a lot of
kiteboarding media… in the evening,on the internet, with friends they’ll talk
about kiteboarding. It’s a sport where those who do
it are passionate about it… Piloting a kite,
learning how to kiteboard, it’s very intuitive,
it’s really a feeling, you have to feel the elements,
the wind on your wing. There’s also technique too, but really,
it’s a lot about the feeling. -Basically, when you kiteboard,
the wind is very important. The direction of the wind
is very important. Today, we have an onshore wind,
so it’s coming from the west; it’s coming like this. We’re here, okay? The person who’s kiteboarding
will move either… through the wind
like this, right? Perpendicular to
the direction of the wind, what that means is they’re going
to leave from point A, they’re going to edge,
tacking we call it, head to point B, then head back to point A. If they’re only
going across, okay? If we want to go into the wind, for example, leave from point A, we’re going to go upwind, that’s another pace
that lets us go into the wind. So, if we go upwind,
we leave from point A, then we go to point B,
and we continue upwind, and we go up like this
by zigzagging. If we want to go down the wind, we leave again from point A, we go downwind, we call it, which lets us go down the wind
to go to point B, here. If we continue downwind,
we never get back to point A. -The key elements for kiteboarding,
to learn kiteboarding at least, then to practice after, is: understanding of weather,
we’re playing with the wind, so we need to understand
what is being forecasted, how the wind will react
with the geomorphology, depending on if we’re in
a fjord, on a lake, in a field. Also knowing
how to analyze a place, a location for kiteboarding, knowing what things
to pay attention… to depending on where you are. Then, after that,
in terms of equipment, in terms of the kite itself,
there are things to know. How it works, safety
is very important, obviously, doing this sport. The point is to have fun so that
we’ll want to keep doing it, then it’s just about practicing… the more you do,
the better you get.
