“It Happened Here” (4): All Saints’ Day

The saints are also called blessed,
and on this mountain exactly, Jesus taught the way of holiness
by preaching the Beatitudes. Moses received the Law on
a mountain, Mount Sinai, and Jesus gives his Law here
on this mountain, Mount Eremos, a Greek word that means
uninhabited or lonely. Although the exact
site is unknown, a Byzantine church was
erected in the 4th century, which was discovered
near the current church. This church was built in 1938 for an order of Franciscan nuns. The eight sides of this church
represent the eight beatitudes, and it’s also shown inside
in the upper windows. As you see, this place
is very beautiful, and it encourages meditation
and contemplation, a very good place for
Jesus’ preaching. St. John Paul II celebrated a Mass near
here with 100,000 people in the year 2000, and he commented that Jesus
teaches that the way of love makes it possible for the
Law to reach its fullness. And he taught this important truth
here on this mount of Galilee. Benedict XVI
comments that in the beatitudes, Jesus is
writing his own biography, because he describes
how he teaches us the way.
