Inside Volition: Saints Row Undercover

Inside Volition: Saints Row Undercover

Volition is a company that has been around
for almost 20 years now. That’s a lot of game consoles and that’s a lot of
software. Not all of it gets to see the light of day. I’ve seen what a lot of Dev Kits look like even before
I started working here, but there is one that I didn’t really
recognize. And there’s just a single PSP Dev Kit here. A couple of them had PSPs
attached to them. A couple of them didn’t. Was there
ever a PSP game being worked on? Because, I don’t know
maybe there was. There was one called Saints Row Undercover…
Or Saints Row 2 PSP, which was its code name. First I was really surprised because I
had never heard of this. It’s supposed to be a Saints Row 2 port directly
in the PSP and then they realized
“Uhhh, We can’t actually do this.” So then they started making it it’s own game. And it was kinda like an “OH SHIT” moment when it’s like seeing it playable and its got this
whole plot that nobody ever got to see. The story that I remember was, Old THQ, Our previous publisher, decided that
Saints Row 2 was doing well, and maybe we could get a port to mobile. Often times when you’ve got a project thats, you know, in
development, there’s going to be all sorts of changes. It will change name, it will change characters, it will change story. It actually had two names.
The name that was settled on before it got canceled was
“Saints Row Undercover” …and before that there was “Saints Row : The Fall” I’m booting up a PSP Development Kit, it’s top secret.
This is what a PSP looks like if you didn’t know. It’s really shocking. There it is. It says right there “Saints Row
Under cover”. I don’t know if it’s even going to show up or not.
But yeah, holy shit. Can you believe this? It has a tutorial mission. It has some
mild player custimization. There’s an
actual open world here. Oh gosh, look at that screen right there. Turns out that when you have early build
they’re not gonna be super clean and optimized and polished
like a finished game is. It was honestly kind of shocking that this was so far along,
and now I’m going to pick up a garden gnome. Volition isn’t a handheld developer when projects like
this come up, we get an outside studio to work on it. …and Volition very involved
with the review process. And both Old THQ
and Volition looked at the project. …and after multiple reviews felt that it really wasn’t
living up to what a Saints Row game could, and should be. There are only a couple people left here now
who still remember it. At that point I just had to figure out,
“Is there anybody here who can tell me more about this?” We should talk to this person. They’ll know.
And I got an email back from them… The first response was “You can’t show this.” They want to show only polished things. They want to
show like final concept art, They want to show final screenshots. The fans love Saints Row. They want to know
everything about it. When I first found Saints Row Undercover, I was looking at
entirely just as someone who plays games.
So the whole time I’m just showing this thing off, really excited about it. I’m going to get this thing up and go “Hey, look at this!” As it went on, I was thinking, none of this was going to fly. Dan is mostly, silently just watching, going like “Hmmm…”
The silence gets to you after a while. The whole time I was just thinking “Oh man…
I dont know… We can’t show this…” The very first question they asked was
“Oh my god, those graphics look so bad” Like we haven’t so good now with the graphics
that when we look at a PSP game it’s just like
“Oh gosh, how can it be that way?” Like it was canceled… if something’s
canceled it probably means nobody wants If something’s canceled, it probably means…
Nobody wants to show it to anybody! You don’t want to just go, “Okay
here’s the thing we’ve been working on, you asked for it,
here it is.” It’s like a test level and there’s a dude who’s walking
and his arms are clipping through each other.
You don’t want to do that because everybody’s going to go… “HEY! WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?” Developers here have this view that
everything has to be final polish pretty shiny…. …when the real meat and potatoes is the stuff that isnt.
The stuff that’s buggy, the stuff that’s early sketches, early concept art. If framed in the right way as an unreleased project,
that stuff is really interesting. And when you start thinking about it… a lot of those
reasons started to go away, why we couldn’t show it. But everyone was like, “Sure. Yeah. Lets do this.” This thing was just sitting there in a room where people
were getting rid of stuff. There is a chance that if I hadn’t found
this, those PSP dev kits… That disc was just sitting in that dev kit!
It would be gone! So next week we’re going to do another event stream.
This time we’re going to be showing off Saints Row Undercover. We want you there to let us know
what in this game you want to see. I think it’s really cool that things have gone so well
with what we’re doing, and giving more exposure to
the studio, and give the fans a look inside into how the saussage gets made. We’re pulling back the curtain. “Here’s what
goes on behind game development.” And, yeah, it’s not pretty… …but at the same if you learn about that
and understand that, we’ll definitely be able to show
more of this. So why is nobody playing this right now? And I really wanted to pull back and say,
“Why, can’t we show this?”

  1. The PSP, my personal all time best portable console of all time. Only the DS comes close. Hopefully the next portable from Sony will have the same legacy.

  2. make one fot PS Vita please. it lacks open world game and if you do make one, the entire PS Vita community will forever praise you

  3. Even as someone who doesn't personally play Saints Row games I would like to applaud Volition for doing this. This is a grand gesture on their part both to the fans of their games aswell as people with a vested interest in gaming history. I wish more developers and publishers would get inspired by this initiative and follow your example. Thank you.

  4. It just needs to be polished and tweaked and then release it on mobile and the ps vita, or you can scrap the game and just work on a new Saints Row game for PC PS4 and Xbox One.

  5. I love where the industry is going, I'm really loving that developers are more willing to share cancelled projects. Whether it be Rare with it's unreleased conker multiplayer game or Volition with this, keep up the great work. No game needs to be in vain, the average fan can look past graphics to appreciate something like this.

  6. I've like Volition before, but more of these sorts of moves and I might have a new definitive favorite studio!
    That's absolutely amazing.

  7. You guys made Summoner!!!, I kinda liked the age of mytholog rpg elements from it, can I play Saints Row on my psp 3000??

  8. This is fantastic! Regardless of what state it's in, the idea of something like this actually being released is great. So often this stuff has to be dug up by lucky people who buy the right devkit, so it's great to see a company actually realize how cool this sort of thing is.

  9. how about just remaking it for the psvita? id love an open world game on the vita, id love it even more if it was saints row, and the vita is more than capable, its a little beast of a machine that doesnt get enough love

  10. that?

  12. I love that they showed this game and did this mini documentary. Behind the scenes stuff on games in development or that were in development is really interesting

  13. I want to see Saints Row go back to its roots before 3 and 4 for current Gen consoles and PC. Keep the character creation system, or make it better. I still think, like APB Reloaded, it's one of the best character customization systems I've seen. Thats all I want to see if Volition releases a new saints row game is the return of it's character customization.

  14. Man, Chip and Alex are making so many cool things happen. First, the dev build streams, now this. This is all so interesting.

  15. Why wouldn't you show this?

It's just a making of. Fuck the suits. Thanks for showing it. We need more of this. Folks like seeing making of movies, folks love seeing making of games too.

  16. Drop the stupid superpowers/aliens shit and go back to the game's roots. Can you imagine a totally revamped SR 2-type experience on the PC & today's consoles?

  17. volition needs to port/remake sr1 & 2 to current generation consoles. I'd by that's day one. sr3 & 4 are fun but they don't feel like saints row anymore

  18. +Volition, do you guys think you could polish it, finish it and resurrect this game from cancellation? That'd be awesome.

  19. Thank you for showing it!!!!! us Saints Row fans want to see this stuff! It really is very interesting! We don't need polish. Again Thank you.

  20. Please make more saints row games.and please go back to the old saint row like saint row 1 and 2, 3 was ok but no aliens and no fucking demons. make the boss go back in time with the time machine to the very beginning before he/she was a saint and have the boss recreat the saints bring back the characters we love that died. Go back to gang bangs with real gangs like in 1 and 2 no fucking Mexican wrestlers, Belgium scientists cloning big ass motherfuckers, emos, aliens, and demons. We dont want to be the president of the united states we want to be a bad ass gang leader leading a bad ass gang and how the boss became president was fucking terrible falling in the white house and landing in the chair the boss was just on a nuclear bomb with no parachutes how did he/she not die. i loved playing as Gat in Gat Out Of Hell but that game was just ass please make that a dream that the boss hade or something and why Kinsey, Shaundi and Gat should of went to save the boss. Musicals really I mean are you serious im glad Saints Row Gat Out Of Hell was only 20 dollars because if i would of spent 50 to 60 dollars for that i would of been so pissed. I just want the old bad ass Third Street Saints back but yall won't do it because yall dont listen to fans. And so what if people say that Saints Row wad like GTA they can suck a dick make the game the way it should be killing gangs, selling drugs, pimping hoes, taging walls with your gang logo around the city, better customization for clothing cars and add airplane and helicopter customization. I love Saints Row but I want the old Third Street Saints back. I have all the Saints Row games except the first one because it broke and i want to have more games of the Saints Row franchise please keep making Saints Row games.

  22. Saints Row 1 & 2 will always be my favorite.
I remember watching SR1 footage in 2005 and being totally blow away by the graphics and gameplay and the whole style of playing.
Remember there weren't that many open world games back in 2005. GTA pretty much had no rivals. True Crime NYC was the closest thing to come to GTA but it couldn't match GTA's formula. I know there was Mafia but I never played it so can't say. Other open world games were just plain, linear and had none immersive cities.
So seeing SR1 was really something spacial.
The game came out in 2006 and I got the 360 soon after and a copy of SR1 and it was a fucking blast to play, you could do what you want when you want. And the shooting mechanics, customization and weapon wheel (to name a few) were an improved over GTA's tired clunky style, SA is still one of my favorite games of all time and I have played thru it dozens of times!
SR2 took all the best shit from SR1 and quadrupled the fun, this is what GTA 4 should have been.
SR 1 & 2 will always have a place in my heart and I'd love to see them go back to that again…but it's probably too late now as there seems to be a strong hate towards SR 1 & 2 from followers of SR 3 & 4.
Likewise SR3 pretty much killed the series for me. The opening mission was excellent but once you were released into the world, it became apparent how stripped down the city felt and how repetitive the missions were. I like my superpowers in Crackdown (another great game) but this really felt out of place and the chopper snipers were the final straw. Never played it again or any of the newer ones since 2011.
    RIP SR 1 & 2.

  23. If there will ever be a reboot of Saints Row, I hope it'll be a direct continuation to SR2. SR3 and 4 are fine, but they felt like a different setting and universe altogether.

  24. As many have put it, it's good of you guys to keep cancelled projects like this. You will never know when your next inspiration and idea can come from!
