Ice jams along the St. Joe River cause flooding

IF YOU THINK THE MELTING AND FREEZING HERE . THINGS ARE MUCH WORSE IN NORTH IDAHO. ICE JAMS ALONG THE ST. JOE RIVER ARE CREATING SERIOUS FLOODING CONCERNS FOR THE TOWN OF CALDER. KXLY4 ‘S CASEY LUND WAS DOWN THERE. AS RESIDENTS KEEP A VERY CLOSE EYE ON WATER LEVELS. AS LIVE @ 43.00W8 24 THIS IS ELK PRAIRIE ROAD OR WHAT USED TO BE ELK PRAIRIE ROAD. ITS THE MAIN ROUTE INTO THE SMALL TOWN OF CALDER. YOU CAN STILL GET IN BY GOING UPSTREAM A LITTLE BIT AND OVER. THE FOLKS THAT LIVE HERE SAY THAT THEY HAVE SEEN IT MUCH WORSE. BACK IN 1974 THE ICE JAMS WERE SO BAD AND THEN THEY GOT A LONG NIGHT OF RAIN THAT YEAR. IT DAMNED THIS WHOLE RIVER BED UP IN ONE NIGHT. IT CAUSED A LOT MORE DAMAGE THAN THIS IS CAUSING. BUT IF THE ICE JAMS DOWNSTREAM DONT CLEAR THINGS COULD GET MUCH WORSE. RICK FARREL @ 38.30W9 22 IF ANOTHER ICE JAM COMES DOWN. THEYVE ALREADY GOT THE CHANNEL PLUGGED ITS GOING TO GET PRETTY DEEP AROUND HERE YET. RICK FARREL GREW UP IN CALDER. HES LIVED HERE HIS ENTIRE LIFE. RICK FARREL @ 38.56W10 22 EVERY OTHER YEAR YOU GET SOME ICE. ABOUT EVERY TEN YEARS YOU GET A REAL DANDY. FARREL ISNT THE ONLY PERSON I TALKED TO WHO REMEMBERS THE LAST DANDY… JOE EPELER SAYS THE FLOODING WAS SO BAD IT TOOK OUT POWER LINES AND LEFT MUCH OF THIS COMMUNITY WITHOUT ELECTRICITY FOR WEEKS. BACK THEN, THEY DIDNT WAIT FOR NATURE TO TAKE ITS COURSE. JOE EPELER @ 46.47W11 24 THAT NIGHT THEY THREW DYNAMITE OFF THE BRIDGE ALL NIGHT LONG THEN THEY ENDED UP GETTING A BIG TUGBOAT THAT USED TO HAUL DOWN THE RIVER. HE COME UP AND BUSTED THAT JAM THROUGH THE RIVER BRIDGE AND THE FLOW WENT DOWN. BOTH THESE LONG TIME IDAHOANS SAY RIGHT NOW, THEY’RE CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC THAT THIS MESS WILL CLEAR. JOE EPELER @ 47.28W12 22 I THINK THAT THE ONLY BUILDING WE GOT IS RECREATION AND THERE IS PEOPLE THAT BUILT CABINS AND SOME ARE KIND OF DOWN THERE YET. RICK FARREL @ 38.45W13 22 ANYBODY THATS LIVED AROUND HERE KNOWS BETTER THAN TO BUILD AROUND THE FLOOD PLAIN. YOU MIGHT THINK WARMER TEMPS WOULD HELP CLEAR THE JAMS — THINK AGAIN. JOE EPELER @ 48.11W14 24 WELL COLD WILL STOP THE RUN OFF AND ALLOW THE RUN OFF TO FEED OUT. BUT IF WE HAD A CONTINUOUS RAIN EVENT AND HIGH TEMPERATURES THEN IT COULD GET TO A PROBLEM. FOR NOW FOLKS LIVING IN THIS SMALL COMMUNITY ARE HOPEFUL THAT THE MINIMAL MOISTURE AND COLD WEATHER IN OUR FORECAST WILL MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. IN NORTH IDAHO CASEY LUND KXLY 4 NEWS.
