Heart Series – Cardiac Surgery | OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center

We’re very proud of the heart surgery program
here at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center. We’ve had tremendous changes over the last
10 years. I’ll give you an example. For a TAVR – that’s a transcatheter valve
replacement – we were one of the first hospitals in the country to get that. We had trained over in Germany before it was
even approved in the United States. We’re still the only center in this region
that’s doing transcatheter valve replacement. Oftentimes, people are told that they have
to head out of town, and we’re doing some things here in town that they aren’t doing
elsewhere. We always try to treat the patient individually,
so some patients need medical therapy, but if you need a surgical intervention, you want
to go to the people that you can trust – the experts. The philosophy has always been “the patient
comes first.” It doesn’t matter if it’s 2 o’clock in the
morning or 2 o’clock in the afternoon – you owe a responsibility to that patient to take
care of them. And I’ve always had a personal philosophy
that I always say, “My first rule of thumb is to treat people like I’d want my family
to be treated.” With all the knowledge that I have, with all
the skills that we have, what would I want somebody to do for my own mom or dad, my own
brother or sister?
