Fourth Week of Advent at All Saints Episcopal Church

Fourth Week of Advent at All Saints Episcopal Church

So, the last candle is that God is free. You mean God is sometimes not free? God is always free. We don’t always notice. so
the fourth week when we’re recognizing So, the fourth week when we’re recognizing that God is free we are embracing the
fact that we have no control over how God is doing this work of bringing the
Christ child into our midst. Just ask any pregnant woman. They
might know a due date, but you don’t get to really count on that. [Tommy]: Yeah I remember that clearly with Isabella and Rosie. [Mother Adrien]: They come when they’re ready. [Tommy]: The due date was like in my mind like the day. And then the due date came and
then it went by and I didn’t know what to do with myself oh I was completely
thrown a curveball. So you had an experience of God’s freedom. So, sometimes God’s freedom feels unsettling, because we wish that things were happening on our time on our calendar. I mean, I put something into my iCalendar and I expect that’s when it’s going to happen. The fourth Sunday, the fourth week,
reminds us that this gift comes in God’s time. Now of course we’re all waiting for
the 25th to open packages but if we really live into that fourth week we’ll
remember and understand that the Christ child comes to us when God’s ready and
when we’re ready and that freedom helps us not to be beholden to a schedule that
rules us but rather a kind of openness and a participation that that sets us
free, takes that burden off of our shoulders and gives it to God and allows
God to work with us to bring about new life in the right time. And that Christ
child could come into our lives in so many different ways, sometimes it’s in
that gathering of family and friends that happens on Christmas day, but
there’s other ways in which we experience that grace of God’s love
and abundant life breaking into the darkness and bringing us the light. And
coincidentally around the 25th is the first day that you’ll begin to notice
that the days are getting a little bit longer and that the light is coming back
into the world. We invite you to join us on the 4th Sunday of Advent December 23rd at All Saints ‘Episcopal Church
