First Bank and the St. Louis blues honor US Navy Ship Fitter 2nd Class Raymond Dierkes

I’m Raymond Bernard Dierkes and I was in the 97 naval Construction Battalion. Captain Clark explained to us that Mr. Churchill, he has this secret Mulberry operation which is called, “Portable Harbor.” June 5th, I’m on a pierhead, finally daybreak came, and then all of a sudden, the shooting started. The warships and the tin cans, they all were firing at Omaha Beach, and they were shooting at us. It was terrible, I don’t know. What I’ve seen wasn’t nice. Thank goodness for the Honor Flight that’s all I’ve got to say. The Honor Flight on May 24th, It’s the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me. When you get people sing into you, and holding your hand and hugging you, and clapping for you, shaking hands with you, saluting you. People sang to you, we visited all the memorials. I was amazed to see everything. It was the most nicest thing that ever, ever happened to me.
