THIS IS WHO GOD IS AND WHO GOD IS NOT. AND I FOUND IT VERY INTERESTING. LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION. I MEAN, A LOT OF PEOPLE WONDER, AND BASED ON WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT IN THE BEGINNING THERE, YOU SAY WHO GOD IS ACCORDING TO JESUS. AND SOMETIMES PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE DEALING WITH WHAT THEY SEE AS KINDA LIKE THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE GOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. ARE THEY DIFFERENT?>>YEAH, WELL, YOU DON’T WANT TO SAY THAT THEY’RE DIFFERENT. BUT THE GOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IS DEFINITELY DEVELOPED. THAT IS TO SAY, GOD’S REVELATION IS PROGRESSIVE. AND SOMETIMES IN THAT PROGRESSIVE REVELATION, JESUS DOES SUPERSEDE VIEWS OF GOD THAT ARE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. AND WHEN HE SUPERSEDES IT, HE GIVES A FULLER SENSE OF WHO GOD IS, WHICH KIND OF CONTEXTUALIZES SOME EXAGGERATIONS OF THE IMAGE OF GOD THAT’S IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. SO WE SAY THAT GOD DEVELOPS. THE IDEA OF GOD DEVELOPS, RIGHT? AND SO YOU CAN SEE, FOR EXAMPLE, THE WHOLE IDEA, FIRST OF ALL, OF LORD OF THE ARMIES AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE. SO GOD IS VIEWED AS THE PROTECTOR AND LEADER OF THE ISRAELITE ARMY. AND AS YOU KIND OF MOVE PAST THE PERIOD OF THE JUDGES, RIGHT, WE SEE THAT ALSO WE GOT THE LORD WHO IS PART AND PARCEL OF THE TEMPLE AND HOW GOD REVEALS HIMSELF IN THE TEMPLE. BUT OF COURSE WE HAVE THE DIVINE NAME THAT NEVER CHANGE– YAHWEH. “I AM WHO AM.” “I AM THE CAUSE OF BEING.” “I AM THE PERSONAL CAUSE OF BEING.” AND OF COURSE, THAT IDEA OF GOD IS COMPLETELY UNWAVERING. THAT NEVER CHANGES. IT’S VERY MUCH POINTS TO THE POWER OF GOD, THE INFINITE POWER OF GOD, POINTS TO THE CREATOR GOD, POINTS TO THE PERSONAL GOD, THAT DOES NOT CHANGE. BUT THE IMAGES THAT SWIRL AROUND YAHWEH AND WHO HE IS, RIGHT, CAN BE VERY DIFFERENT. AND OF COURSE, WE SEE THAT JESUS, YOU KNOW, IN THE ANTINOMIES, YOU KNOW, IN THE MATTHEW’S GOSPEL, GIVES A SERIES OF, NOT JUST CHANGES IN THE TORAH, BUT IMAGES OF GOD THAT GO ALONG WITH THOSE VIEWS IN THE TORAH. SO FIRST OF ALL, YOU KNOW, WE CAN SEE IN THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, THE COMMAND, YOU KNOW, TO KILL YOUR ENEMIES AND EVEN SOMETIMES TO, AS THEY SAY, TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENEMIES’ WOMEN AND CHILDREN. DON’T LET THEM PROCREATE BASICALLY, YOU KNOW, AND YOU KNOW, TAKE OVER YOUR TERRITORY. WELL THE PROPHETS HAVE A MUCH FULLER SENSE OF THAT THAN, SAY, THE GOD THAT’S PORTRAYED IN THE MONARCHY. AND OF COURSE, THE LATER PROPHETS EVEN HAVE THE IDEA OF GOD IS — THE GOD WHO IS MERCIFUL LOVE LIKE THE MERCIFUL LOVE OF A MOTHER. BUT BY THE TIME YOU GET TO JESUS, WHICH IS THE FULLNESS OF REVELATION, RIGHT, BY THE TIME YOU GET TO JESUS, YOU ARE DEALING WITH GOD WHO IS UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. AND REMEMBER IN THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT WHERE JESUS IS SAYING, YOU HAVE HEARD IT SAID AN EYE FOR AN EYE AND A TOOTH FOR A TOOTH, THAT’S PRE SCRIPT, LIKE TORAH. THAT’S, LIKE, THE WORD OF GOD. BUT I SAY TO YOU, SO, HERE JESUS IS BUT I SAY TO YOU, INDEED LOVE YOUR ENEMY, DON’T HATE YOUR ENEMY AND DO GOOD TO THOSE WHO HATE YOU. WHY? WHY? BECAUSE IF YOU DO, YOU ARE GOING TO BE IMITATING YOUR FATHER IN HEAVEN WHO ALSO LOVES ENEMIES. NOW, IN OTHER WORDS, HIS PERFECTION COMES FROM COMPASSION AND EVEN HIS LOVE FOR HIS ENEMIES. AND AGAIN, YOU HAVE HEARD IT SAID, YOU KNOW, DON’T KILL. BUT I SAY TO YOU, DON’T GO ANGRY WITH YOUR BROTHERS OR YOUR SISTERS AND SO FORTH. SO, HERE, NOTICE THAT WITH EVERY PRE SCRIPT THAT JESUS ENHANCES AND FULFILLS IN TORAH, NOTICE THAT HE IS ALSO ENHANCING AND FULFILLING THE IMAGE OF HIS HEAVENLY FATHER AS WELL. BECAUSE JESUS IS NOT GOING TO ASK US TO DO SOMETHING THAT YOU KNOW, GOD HIMSELF IS NOT, YOU KNOW, DOING HIMSELF. THAT HE IS NOT IN HIS OWN BEING DOING. SO, FOR ALL INTENSIVE PURPOSES, YOU KNOW, THE IDEA THEN THAT JESUS CAN AND DOES IN FACT SUPERCEDE THE GOD OF THE OLD TESTAMENT AND CAN AND DOES SUPERCEDE THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE LAW, REPLACING IT WITH THE LAW AND LOVE OF THE SPIRIT WHICH OF COURSE, ST. PAUL TAKES TO ITS FRUITION, JESUS DOES DO THIS. AND THERE’S NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. WHEN HE COMES ULTIMATELY TO THE FATHER OF THE PRODIGAL SON, HE DOES SHOW THAT THE FATHER UNCONDITIONALLY MERCIFUL.>>Doug: RIGHT. WANT TO TALK TO YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PRODIGAL SON, WHAT YOU HAVE IN THE BOOK. LET ME GO BACK TO WHAT YOU SAID EARLIER. IT’S NOT THAT GOD NECESSARILY CHANGES, IT’S THAT OUR UNDERSTANDING OF HIM CHANGES. RIGHT?>>Father: EXACTLY. AND IT GOES BACK TO THAT. AND I WANT TO GO TO A COUPLE OF THINGS, HERMENEUTICAL PRINCIPLE, ST. THOMAS AQUINAS, ALWAYS REFERRED TO, WHATEVER IS RECEIVED IS RECEIVED IN THE MANNER OF THE RECEIVER. SO, WHEN GOD IS REVEALING HIMSELF, YOU KNOW, AS YAHWEH TO MOSES, TO THE NOMADIC PEOPLE, BEING CREATOR AND POWERFUL GOD, NO PROBLEM AT ALL. RIGHT? WHEN HE’S REVEALING HIMSELF TO A WARRIOR CULTURE, WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO PICK OUT OF THE NAME, YAHWEH IS NOT GOING TO BE LOVE. WHAT THEY ARE GOING TO HEAR IS HEY, HE’S A POWER GOD. CREATOR GOD. HE’S GOING TO MARCH WITH OUR ARMIES. THAT’S WHO HE IS. AND OF COURSE, YOU CAN SEE HOW, WHATEVER IS RECEIVED, RECEIVED IN THE MANNER OF THE RECEIVER. I HEAR WHAT I AM PREPARED TO HEAR AND CAN HEAR IN A WARRIOR CULTURE, AND A WARRIOR SOCIETY. AND OF COURSE, ISRAEL DEVELOPS IN THE SOCIETY. IT TURNS INTO A MONARCHY AND STILL HAS A MONARCHY, WARRIOR SOCIETY BUT IT’S DEVELOPING, RIGHT? DAVID’S PSALMS NOW INCLUDE THESE REMARKABLE COMPONENTS OF THE LOVE OF GOD AND THAT GOD DELIGHTS IN HIS PEOPLE. WE SEE A TONING DOWN OF THE WARRIOR IMAGE AND EVEN, SO, PECULIARLY OF THE PROPHETS, AND ALMOST A MOTHER IMAGE. AND WHAT DO YOU MEAN. SO, HE LOVES US AS A MOTHER LOVES HIS CHILD. AND SO, IN A WARRIOR CULTURE, JUST 400, 500 YEARS BEFORE, PEOPLE SCRATCHING THEIR HEAD AND THINKING, WHAT IN THE WORLD, NOW, ISRAEL IS READY TO HEAR THAT. AND THEY DO HEAR THAT. AND THEY HEAR IT THROUGH THE VOICE OF THE PROPHETS. AND THEN JESUS COMES ALONG. AND HE TELLS THE FATHER OF THE PRODIGAL SON, THEY ARE PREPARED TO HEAR, THEY HAVE BEEN PREPARED BY THE PROPHET, PREPARED BY WISDOM LITERATURE. NOW, YOU KNOW, WHEN JESUS TELL US THIS PARABLE OF THE FATHER OBVIOUSLY REFERRING TO GOD HIS FATHER, THEN THEY ARE READY TO HEAR THAT THE FATHER IS COMPLETE, UNCONDITIONAL, COMPASSIONATE LOVE. READY TO HEAR THAT HE’S COMPLETE UNCONDITIONAL FORGIVING LOVE, BASICALLY LOVE ITSELF. AND JESUS AGAIN PUTS THAT INTO BEING BY SAYING THAT LOVE IS THE HIGHEST COMMANDMENT. AND REMEMBER, THE RABBIS BELIEVED THAT TORAH, YOU KNOW, REFLECTED THE HEART OF GOD. WHEN JESUS SAYS THEN THAT THE ENTIRE LAW AND THE PROPHETS ARE FULFILLED IN THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS TO LOVE, RIGHT, HE’S LITERALLY SAYING, RIGHT, THAT THE ENTIRE TORAH IS FULFILLED IN THE COMMANDMENT TO LOVE. THAT IS THE HEART OF THE FATHER. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. YOU CAN’T SPEAK ABOUT TORAH WITHOUT SPEAKING ABOUT THE IMAGE OF GOD. SO, THE IDEA OF LOVE AS CENTRAL THEN IS JESUS’ FULLEST TEXT. AND THAT GIVES RISE TO THE SECOND SO-CALLED HERMENEUTIC CALL PRINCIPLE. PRINCIPLE FOR INTERPRETING THE SCRIPTURE. YOU CAN ALWAYS LOOK AT THE OLD TESTAMENT THROUGH THE LENSE AND CATEGORIES OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. SO, JESUS IS THE FULLNESS OF REVELATION. AND IF WE THINK ABOUT A CONE AS IT WERE, BIG PART OF THE CONE IS THE NEW TESTAMENT AND REALLY NARROW PART OF THE CONE IS THE OLD TESTAMENT, THEN YOU CAN LOOK THROUGH THE FULL REVELATION OF GOD, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE. GOD IS THE FATHER OF THE PRODIGAL SON. AND YOU CAN LOOK AT ALL OF THE PREVIOUS GENERATIONS AND YOU CAN SEE HOW YAHWEH WAS THE GOD OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ALL ALONG. AND CERTAIN KINDS OF THINGS WHICH WERE CULTURALLY ANACHRONISTIC. AND THEY GET MODIFIED AND SUPERCEDED BY JESUS’ REVELATION. AND YOU ARE OKAY, IF YOU ARE LOOKING THROUGH THE LENSE OF THE NEW TESTAMENT BACK TO THE OLD TESTAMENT. HOWEVER, YOU CAN’T DO IT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. YOU CAN’T BE LOOKING THROUGH THE LENSE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT WHICH IS REALLY LIKE A PEEPHOLE. AND YOU ARE TRYING TO LOOK AT THE FULLER REVELATION. YOU CAN’T TRY TO TAKE THE FULLNESS OF JESUS’ REVELATION AND JAM IT INTO THE CATEGORIES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. THE CATEGORIES OF THE PAT ARKAL GOD, THE CATEGORY OF THE GOD WHO THE JUDGES UNDERSTOOD. CATEGORIES OF THE GOD THAT THE MONARCHY UNDERSTOOD. CATEGORIES ARE JUST TOO SMALL. THEY ARE JUST NOT GOING TO CONTAIN THEM. AND THEY ARE GOING TO SHATTER, IF YOU TRY TO TAKE THE FULLNESS OF JESUS’ REVELATION AND JAM IT INTO THOSE CATEGORIES. AND THAT’S WHY JESUS TELLS THAT PARABLE. YOU CAN’T TAKE NEW WINE AND PUT IT INTO OLD WINE SKINS. WHAT’S THE NEW WINE? THE NEW WINE IS JESUS’ WORD. IT’S THE FULLNESS OF REVELATION. YOU CAN’T POUR IT INTO OLD WINE SKINS. WHAT ARE THE OLD WINE SKINS. IT’S THE CATEGORIES OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. AS GOOD AS THEY ARE, REVEALED AS THEY ARE BY GOD, THEY ARE ONLY PARTIAL. AND OF COURSE, IT’S LIKE AN OLD WINE SKIN. BECAUSE IF YOU PUT THE NEW WINE IN THE OLD WINE SKIN, YOU LOSE THE SKIN AND THE WINE BECAUSE IT WILL BURST. IT JUST SHATTERS AS IT WERE. BUT IF YOU PUT THE NEW WINE INTO NEW WINE SKINS, YOU ARE GOING TO BE JUST FINE. AND WE CALL THAT PRINCIPLE ASYMMETRICAL HERMENEUTICS. YOU CAN ONLY GO IN ONE DIRECTION. FROM THE NEW TO THE OLD. YOU CAN’T TRY AND JAM THE NEW INTO THE OLD AND GO FROM THE OLD TO THE NEW. SO, IF YOU JUST REMEMBER THOSE TWO PRINCIPLES, WHATEVER IS RECEIVED IS RECEIVED IN THE MANNER OF THE RECEIVER. AND IF YOU REMEMBER, JUST ASYMMETRICAL HERMENEUTICS, JUST A FANCY WAY OF SAYING, YOU CAN ALWAYS PUT THE OLD TESTAMENT REVELATION INTO THE CATEGORIES OF THE NEW. BUT YOU CAN’T REVERSE IT AND PUT THE NEW TESTAMENT CATEGORIES INTO THE OLD TESTAMENT.>>Doug: AM I CORRECT IN UNDERSTANDING, FATHER, SOMETIMES WE LOOK BACK AT THE OLD TESTAMENT AND WE HEAR, AN EYE FOR AN EYE, THINGS LIKE THAT, AND THEY SEEMED IN OUR MODERN WORLD TO BE VERY HARSH. BUT IS IT TRUE IN UNDERSTANDING THAT FOR THE CULTURE AT THE TIME, THAT KIND OF THING WAS SEEN AS BEING VERY JUST AND FAIR WHEN IN OTHER CULTURES, IF YOU STOLE SOMETHING, THEY CUT YOUR HAND OFF. OR IF YOU STOLE SOMETHING, YOU DIE. SO AT LEAST IT WAS AN ATTEMPT TO MAKE THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME IN SOME WAY.>>Father: AND OH YEAH, IT WAS ABSOLUTELY THOUGHT TO BE PURE JUSTICE. AND I DON’T WANT TO BRING UP JUST A WHOLE LOT OF FANCY TERMS. BUT THERE’S A FANCY TERM FOR IT CALLED THE LOVE JUSTICE DIALECTIC. AND WHAT THAT FANCY TERM SIMPLY MEANS, IN THE OLD TESTAMENT, IT’S TO YOU. JUSTICE IS THE HIGHEST ORDER OF THE TORAH, OF THE LAW. SO IF THE LAW ASPIRES TO JUSTICE, JUSTICE IS EQUITY. REMEMBER THAT. IF YOU DO THIS, YOU GET THIS. AND IF YOU DO THIS CRIME, YOU GET THIS PUNISHMENT AND EQUITABLE PUNISHMENT, EYE FOR AN EYE, TOOTH FOR A TOOTH. HOWEVER, YOU KNOW, IF YOU DO THIS KIND OF GOOD AND YOU EXPECT THIS KIND OF A GOOD RECOMPENSE AND THERE’S ALWAYS AN IDEA THAT GOD IS JUST. BUT THE IDEA THAT GOD IS LOVING AND COMPASSIONATE, THAT COMES WITH THE PROPHETS. AND THE IDEA THAT IS GOD IS UNCONDITIONALLY LOVING AND UNCONDITIONALLY COMPASSIONATE. THAT COMES WITH JESUS. SO, WHAT WE NOTICE THEN IS THAT WE’RE MOVING. LOVE DOESN’T DESTROY JUSTICE SO LOVE IS BUILT ON JUSTICE. BUT LOVE GOES WAY BEYOND JUSTICE. AN UNCONDITIONAL LOVE DOESN’T DESTROY PARTIAL LOVE. IT’S BUILT ON PARTIAL LOVE. BUT IT GOES WAY BEYOND PARTIAL LOVE. AND WE KIND OF LOOK AT IT AS A DEVELOPMENT THEN. THIS IS, WHAT COULD THE POPULACE OF A WARRIOR SOCIETY TOLERATE? WELL, IT COULD TOLERATE JUSTICE. THAT’S WHAT THEY CAN UNDERSTAND AND TOLERATE. LATER IN THE PROPHETIC TIME. THEY CAN TOLERATE A LITTLE MORE, YOU KNOW, THAT LOVE ACTUALLY SUPERCEDES JUSTICE. IT’S A BETTER STANDARD TO MOVE TOWARD, GO FOR LOVE AND FOR WISDOM, NOT JUST FOR JUSTICE. SO, WE’VE GOT THESE TWO OTHER VIRTUES THAT LOOK LIKE THEY ARE KIND OF SUPERCEDING JUSTICE BUT NOT OVERCOMING IT. RIGHT? JUST BUILT UPON IT AND GOING BEYOND IT. AND THEN YOU GET TO UNCONDITIONAL LOVE WITH JESUS, UNCONDITIONAL COMPASSION AND JESUS OF COURSE, THAT DOESN’T DESTROY ANYTHING. IT JUST GOES BEYOND IT. IT FULFILLS IT, BRINGS IT TO FRUITION AND SO, OF COURSE, THERE IS FAR MORE TO GOD THAN WE IN OUR WARRIOR CULTURE COULD EVER IMAGINE. AND EVEN FAR MORE THAN THE PROPHETIC CULTURE. FAR MORE TO GOD THAN EVEN THE PROPHETIC CULTURE COULD IMAGINE AS REVEALED BY JESUS AND HE HAS TO DO IT OVER THE COURSE OF TIME BECAUSE HUMAN BEINGS SIMPLY DEVELOP. THEY DEVELOP PSYCHOLOGICALLY, THEY DEVELOP CULTURALLY, INTELLECTUALLY, NUANCE, CULTURE AND DEVELOP. AND AS IT HAPPENS, THEN OF COURSE, WE’RE CAPABLE OF RECEIVING MORE AND MORE AND MORE FROM THE LORD. AND OF COURSE, HE IS VERY, VERY WISE IN WHAT HE GIVES US AND WHAT WE WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE. WE DON’T TRY TO GIVE A BABY CALCULUS. WE’RE JUST CONTENT WITH TEACHING.>>Doug: AND IN FACT, WE TALKED ABOUT MIRACLES. PAST TIME. AND HE’S NOT GOING TO FORCE FEED US THAT WE’RE NOT CAPABLE OF IN A NATURAL WAY, IN THE SENSE OF WHERE WE ARE IN OUR LIVES AND GROWTH AS A CULTURE. HE COULD DO THAT, BUT THAT’S NOT THE WAY OUR LORD TENDS TO ACT.>>HE’S ALWAYS, ALWAYS KIND OF AUGURING TOWARD OUR SALVATION. NOT KIND OF. HE IS ALWAYS AUGURING TOWARD OUR SALVATION AND THAT MEANS THE DEPTH OF LOVE SO WE IMITATE OUR HEAVENLY FATHER. AND IN MATTHEW’S GOSPEL WHEN JESUS SAYS BE PERFECT AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS PERFECT. LUKE TRANSLATES IT FROM THE SERMON ON THE PLAIN, BE COMPASSIONATE AS YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER IS COMPASSIONATE. SEDUCED INTO A VIEW OF HAPPINESS WHICH IS NOTHING MORE THAN NARCISSISM AND POWER, LUST AND VANITY WRIT LARGE. AND OF COURSE, WHAT HE’S SAYING IS IS, THIS IS NOT YOUR HAPPINESS. THIS IS YOUR EMPTINESS. THIS IS YOUR DARKNESS. GOING TO CUT YOU OFF FROM OTHERS AND CUT YOU OFF FROM LOVE. THIS IS GOING TO MAKE YOU REJECT GOD, MACK YOU REJECT OTHERS.
