Dump Truck Hits State Troopers, Causes Chain-Reaction Crash On I-280 In N.J.

GOOD AFTERNOON, I’M CHRIS WRAGGE. AND I’M MARY CALVI. NOW ON CBS 2 AND STREAMING ON CBSN NEW YORK. WE BEGIN WITH BREAKING NEWS IN NEW JERSEY. A DUMP TRUCK CRASHES INTO TWO STATE TROOPERS IN WEST ORANGE. CBS NEWS’ HAZEL SANCHEZ ON THE SCENE IN WEST ORANGE WHERE RIGHT NOW, ALL LANES OF INTERSTATE 280 ARE CLOSED. HAZEL? Reporter: YEAH, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, THIS IS STILL A VERY ACTIVE INVESTIGATION. WE ARE STANDING ON THE MOUNT PLEASANT AVENUE OVERPASS OVERLOOKING INTERSTATE 280. YOU CAN SEE ALL THE FLASHLIGHTS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS HERE AT THE SCHEMING WHERE AMAZINGLY, NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY HURT. THIS ALL HAPPENED AROUND 10:20 A.M. STATE TROOPERS WERE PULLED OVER I-80 NEAR EXIT 9 RESPONDING EASTBOUND RESPONDING TO AN ACCIDENT. TWO TROOPERS WERE STANDING OUTSIDE A PATROL CAR SPEAKING TO THE PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENT WHEN A DUMP TRUCK CAME BARRELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, HITTING THE TWO TROOPERS AND MULTIPLE PEDESTRIANS. NOW, IF YOU TAKE A LOOK AT A WITNESS PHOTO THAT WE RECEIVED, THE DUMP TRUCK THEN SLAMMED INTO THE BACK OF AN AMBULANCE AND BURST INTO FLAMES. THAT AMBULANCE THEN GOT PUSHED INTO THE REAR OF A WEST ORANGE FIRE TRUCK. NEW JERSEY STATE POLICE TELL US, AGAIN, SURPRISINGLY, NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY HURT. THE TROOPERS WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND WE ARE TOLD THEY ARE EXPECTED TO BE OKAY. NOW, AT THIS HOUR, WE DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE DUMP TRUCK DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL. BUT THE DRIVER DID REMAIN AT THE SCENE AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. NOW, AS YOU SAID, TRAFFIC ON I- 280 WAS CLOSED IN BOTH DIRECTIONS BETWEEN EXIT 8 AND EXIT 11. BUT WE ARE NOTICING THAT THEY ARE STARTING TO LET SOME TRAFFIC THROUGH ON THE WESTBOUND LANES. BUT THIS COULD CAUSE TRAFFIC TO BE SNARLED FOR QUITE SOME TIME AS THIS INVESTIGATION CONTINUES. THAT IS THE LATEST HERE LIVE IN WEST ORANGE. HAZEL SANCHEZ, CBS 2 NEWS. WE CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THAT BREAKING NEWS. THE CRASH HAS CAUSED A MAJOR BACKUP ON INTERSTATE 280. AND CBS 2’S DAN RICE IS OVER THE SCENE IN CHOPPER 2. DAN, WHAT CAN YOU TELL US? Reporter: WELL, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, QUITE A BIT OF EMERGENCY RESPONSE WAS BROUGHT OUT HERE TO IT TEND TO ALL THE VEHICLES AND THE PEOPLE INVOLVED. BOTH DIRECTIONS OF THE HIGHWAY WERE SHUT DOWN BUT, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PICTURE, WESTBOUND TRAFFIC BEGINNING TO MOVE. TWO LANES ARE OPEN. THE BIGGER PROBLEM IS EASTBOUND TRAFFIC ALL LANES SHUT DOWN. YOU CAN SEE A COLLECTION OF CARS HERE AT LEAST A DOZEN VEHICLES INVOLVED. A LARGER INVESTIGATION WILL ENSUE. BECAUSE OF THAT, THERE ARE CLOSURE POINTS ON EASTBOUND 280, THE FIRST ONE AT EXIT 9. YOU SEE ALL THE TRAFFIC STUCK BEHIND THE ORIGINAL ACCIDENT BEING SIPHONED OFF THE HIGHWAY THERE. BUT ALSO, BACK AT EXIT 7, A LITTLE OUT OF OUR VIEW, EXIT 7 THEY HAVE THE HIGHWAY SHUT DOWN. 10, 24, THOSE TWO ROADS ARE ALTERNATES.

  1. Dump truck driver deserves what’s coming they all drive way to fast this will come back on all of them after this good for you all

  2. Another Totally Preventable Accident caused by a bad driver with Pitifully Poor Driving Skills and No Common Sense who was driving at an Excessive Speed.

  3. Ironically, I came down that highway 🛣 earlier that morning. Talk about being fortunate. I just hope everyone is alright.

  4. The interstate is a scary place, especially in high-volume areas. I am waiting for the day when we have a major fire department involved incident.

  5. I hope they take his license ! people always speed down that hill smh speedy recovery for all involved

  6. I'm tired of calling the police to warn that these trucks run at more than 80 miles per hour, and they do nothing on route 80 and 280 are the cause of all accidents, how long will this continue? If I drove more than 80 miles per hour I get paid and put a ticket and I have to court, do we expect more people to die? Now that I hit police and fire and ambulance cars are they going to take action?
