Dramatized version of the St. Albans Raid…with a Plattsburgh connection

3 LAUREN MANY OF US IN OUR REGION KNOW… THE SAINT ALBANS RAID WAS THE NORTHERNMOST LAND ENGAGEMENT OF THE CIVIL WAR.MIKE BUT ONE THING ABOUT IT MANY OF US MAY áNOT KNOW… IT ALSO HAD A ‘HOLLYWOODIZED’ PLATTSBURGH CONNECTION. TONIGHT, AT THE CLINTON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND MUSEUM… A PLATTSBURGH MAN SHOWED HIS OWN 16-MILLIMETER, REEL-TO-REEL COPY OF THE 1954 HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, “THE RAID”. IT WAS A DRAMATIZED RE- TELLING OF THE 1864 SAINT ALBANS RAID. THE ACTUAL COMMANDER OF THE RAID HAD ESCAPED FROM A UNION PRISON STOCKADE IN ILLINOIS. BUT IN THE FILM, THE FICTIONAL COMMANDER ESCAPES FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY. 3 Andy MacDougall”It does begin in Plattsburgh with a jailbreak, back when Plattsburgh was spelled without the ‘h’, and so after that, the Confederate soldiers who engineered the jailbreak head across the Canadian border to plot their attack on St. Albans.”MIKE THE RAID ACTUALLY DID HAVE A LATER PLATTSBURGH CONNECTION. NEW YORK STATE ORGANIZES ITS 26th CAVALRY REGIMENT IN THE LAKE CITY NOT LONG AFTERWARD… OUT OF FEAR THE UNION’S NORTHERN BORDER WAS VULNERABLE. IF YOU MISSED TONIGHT’S SCREENING OF “THE RAID”… YOU CAN CATCH IT AGAIN TOMORROW NIGHT AT 7, AT THE MUSEUM. IT’S FREE OF CHARGE, BUT DONATIONS TO THE MUSEUM ARE ENCOURAGED. 3 LAUREN A FLOCK OF FLAMINGOS HAS BEEN MAKING IT’S WAY AROUND THE NORTH COUNTRY áANDá MAKING MONEY FOR A GOOD CAUSE.
