A READING FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS. GOD SAID: “LET US MAKE MAN IN OUR IMAGE, AFTER OUR LIKENESS. LET THEM HAVE DOMINION OVER THE FISH OF THE SEA, THE BIRDS OF THE AIR, AND THE CATTLE, AND OVER ALL THE WILD ANIMALS AND ALL THE CREATURES THAT CRAWL ON THE GROUND.” GOD CREATED MAN IN HIS IMAGE; IN THE DIVINE IMAGE HE CREATED HIM; MALE AND FEMALE HE CREATED THEM. GOD BLESSED THEM, SAYING: “BE FERTILE AND MULTIPLY; FILL THE EARTH AND SUBDUE IT. HAVE DOMINION OVER THE FISH OF THE SEA, THE BIRDS OF THE AIR, AND ALL THE LIVING THINGS THAT MOVE ON THE EARTH.” GOD ALSO SAID: “SEE, I GIVE YOU EVERY SEED-BEARING PLANT ALL OVER THE EARTH AND EVERY TREE THAT HAS SEED-BEARING FRUIT ON IT TO BE YOUR FOOD; AND TO ALL THE ANIMALS OF THE LAND, ALL THE BIRDS OF THE AIR, AND ALL THE LIVING CREATURES THAT CRAWL ON THE GROUND, I GIVE ALL THE GREEN PLANTS FOR FOOD.” AND SO IT HAPPENED. GOD LOOKED AT EVERYTHING HE HAD MADE, AND HE FOUND IT VERY GOOD. EVENING CAME, AND MORNING FOLLOWED THE SIXTH DAY. THUS THE HEAVENS AND THE EARTH AND ALL THEIR ARRAY WERE COMPLETED. SINCE ON THE SEVENTH DAY GOD WAS FINISHED WITH THE WORK HE HAD BEEN DOING, GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL THE WORK HE HAD UNDERTAKEN. SO GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY AND MADE IT HOLY, BECAUSE ON IT HE RESTED FROM ALL THE WORK HE HAD DONE IN CREATION. VERBUM DOMINI DEO GRATIAS. LORD, GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. LORD,GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. BEFORE THE MOUNTAINS WERE BEGOTTEN AND THE EARTH AND THE WORLD WERE BROUGHT FORTH, FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING YOU ARE GOD. LORD,GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. YOU TURN MEN BACK TO DUST, SAYING, “RETURN, O CHILDREN OF MEN.” FOR A THOUSAND YEARS IN YOUR SIGHT ARE AS YESTERDAY, NOW THAT IT IS PAST, OR AS A WATCH OF THE NIGHT. LORD,GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. TEACH US TO NUMBER OUR DAYS ARIGHT, THAT WE MAY GAIN WISDOM OF HEART. RETURN, O LORD! HOW LONG? HAVE PITY ON YOUR SERVANTS! LORD, GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. FILL US AT DAYBREAK WITH YOUR KINDNESS, THAT WE MAY SHOUT FOR JOY AND GLADNESS ALL OUR DAYS. LET YOUR WORK BE SEEN BY YOUR SERVANTS AND YOUR GLORY BY THEIR CHILDREN. LORD, GIVE SUCCESS TO THE WORK OF OUR HANDS. ALLELUIA ALLELUIA ALLELUIA ALLELUIA ALLELUIA ALLELUIA BLESSED BE THE LORD DAY BY DAY, GOD, OUR SALVATION, WHO BEARS OUR BURDENS. ALLELUIA ALLELUIA ALLELUIA>>DOMINUS VOBISCUM. ET CUM SPIRITU TUO. ♪>>+ LECTIO SANCTI EVANGELII SECUNDUM MATTHEUM GLORIA TIBI, DOMINE.>>JESUS CAME TO HIS NATIVE PLACE AND TAUGHT THE PEOPLE IN THEIR SYNAGOGUE. THEY WERE ASTONISHED AND SAID, “WHERE DID THIS MAN GET SUCH WISDOM AND MIGHTY DEEDS? IS HE NOT THE CARPENTER’S SON? IS NOT HIS MOTHER NAMED MARY AND HIS BROTHERS JAMES, JOSEPH, SIMON, AND JUDAS? ARE NOT HIS SISTERS ALL WITH US? WHERE DID THIS MAN GET ALL THIS?” AND THEY TOOK OFFENSE AT HIM. BUT JESUS SAID TO THEM, “A PROPHET IS NOT WITHOUT HONOR EXCEPT IN HIS NATIVE PLACE AND IN HIS OWN HOUSE.” AND HE DID NOT WORK MANY MIGHTY DEEDS THERE BECAUSE OF THEIR LACK OF FAITH. VERBUM DOMINI LAUS TIBI, CHRISTE IN ABOUT 4 MONTHS TIME UNITED STATES WILL CELEBRATE LABOR DAY. THE 1ST MONDAY IN SEPTEMBER. ON THAT DAY IT IS RECOGNIZED FOR THE LABORERS WHETHER BY HAND OR INTELLECT OF THE WORK THAT IS DONE BY THE MEN AND WOMEN. IT IS MEANT TO BE A DAY OF RECOGNITION. IT IS NOT A RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY BUT A DAY OF RECOGNITION AND REST AND REFLECTION AND WE WILL ALL HAVE MEMORIES OF HOW WE SPENT THOSE DAYS AND I KNOW AS A CHILD I CAME FROM A BLUE-COLLAR NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE SOUTHWESTERN PART OF PENNSYLVANIA COAL MINERS AND STEELWORKERS. IT WAS A DAY WHEN MY FATHER WHO WAS THE PRIMARY BREADWINNER WOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE WITH US WITH FAMILY AND MY BROTHERS AND MY MOTHER AND I AND IT WAS A DAY OF GREAT JOY FOR US BECAUSE WE WERE ALL TOGETHER OTHERWISE MY FATHER HAD WORKED VERY HARD TO EARN A LIVING. WHAT WAS REMARKABLE ABOUT THOSE MEN AND WOMEN THAT I RECALLED IS THAT THEY WERE VERY RESOLUTE AND DEDICATED AND THEY DID THEIR BEST AND VERY RELIGIOUS. MY FATHER A COALMINER, HE WOULD TAKE HIS LUNCH PAIL INTO THE MINE AND THE LUNCH WOULD BE PACKED BY MY MOTHER AND HE WOULD ALSO HAVE HIS ROSARY AND HE WOULD HAVE PRAYERS IF HE HAD A BREAK WHILE IN THE MINE HE WOULD PRAY HIS PRAYERS. WE ALL HAVE OUR PARTICULAR MEMORIES BUT TODAY MAY 1 FOR THE MAJORITY OF THE WORLD IT IS MAY DAY. BETTER KNOWN AS INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY. THEREFORE LABOR DAY FOR MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AND CITIES IN THE WORLD. THAT DATE THIS DAY TO DAY ACTUALLY STEMS FROM LABOR UNREST IN THE LATE 1800S IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHEN LABORERS AND UNIONS WERE FIGHTING FOR A BETTER WORKDAY INSTEAD OF A 12 OR 14 HOUR WORKDAY WORKING FOR WANTING TO PROTEST FOR AN 8 HOUR DAY AND THERE WAS VIOLENCE ATTACHED TO THE PROTEST. VARIOUS SOCIALIST GROUPS PICKED UP ON THAT THEME OF RECOGNIZING AND CELEBRATING AND MEMORIALIZING THAT UNREST ON 1 MAY. GRADUALLY IT SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE WORLD BECOME THIS INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY AND TO THIS DATE THERE IS OFTEN TIMES PROTEST IN VARIOUS CITIES AND VIOLENCE THAT TAKES PLACE. IT DOES NOT DEMONSTRATE AT ALL WHAT WE KNOW AS THE DIGNITY OF WORK. THE DIGNITY OF WORK AS MANIFESTED TO US BY OUR LORD AND BY OUR GOD. SO THESE PROTEST, WHILE THEY CONTINUED TODAY AND IN THE 1950S WAS OF GREAT CONCERN TO OUR THEN POPE PIUS XII, AND ON MAY 1, 1955, FOSTERING A DEEP CONCERN ABOUT WHAT WAS THEN THE COLD WAR AND THE COMMUNIST MOVEMENT AND THE MAY 1 CELEBRATIONS OF NOT CELEBRATING WORK AS SUCH BUT WORKERS IN RELATION TO THE STATE, THAT YOU WERE SUBJECTED TO THE STATE AND YOU WORK FOR THE STATE AND NOT FOR THE GLORY AND DIGNITY OF GOD. SO IN RESPONSE TO THAT POPE PIUS XII INITIATED A MEMORIAL. THE MEMORIAL OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER. TO BRING BACK INTO FOCUS THE SANCTITY OF WORK, THE DIGNITY OF WORK. AND AS A RESULT WE HAVE THIS NOW CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN DIMENSION TO THIS DAY AS A COUNTERFORCE TO THE INTERNATIONAL WORKERS DAY AND THE REST OF THE WORLD. NOW, IT HOLDS THAT ST. JOSEPH IS OUR PATRON SAINT OF WORKERS. WE ALSO KNOW HE IS OUR PATRON OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH OUR PROTECTOR. THAT WAS ONE REASON WHY POPE PIUS THE 12TH WANTED ST. JOSEPH TO BE THE PATRON SAINT OF THIS PARTICULAR DAY THIS MEMORIAL OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER. THE CHURCH THEREFORE REMINDS US OF THE SACREDNESS OF OUR LABORS. AND OF EVERYONE’S DIGNITY IN THE WORKPLACE. IN USING ST. JOSEPH AS THE MODEL TO EMULATE. TODAY IS THE GREAT DAY OF CELEBRATION FOR THIS ST. JOSEPH THE PROTECTOR OF OUR UNIVERSAL CHURCH AND THE PATRON OF WORKERS. THE DIGNITY OF HUMAN WORK HAS LONG BEEN CELEBRATED. PARTICIPATION IN THE CREATIVE WORK OF GOD. REFLECTED IN THE BOOK OF GENESIS. THROUGH WORK HUMANKIND FULFILLS THE COMMANDS FOUND IN GENESIS TO CARE FOR THE EARTH AND TO BE PRODUCTIVE IN OUR LABORS. TO COOPERATE AND TO WORK TOGETHER WITH HIM WITH OUR LORD TO BRING HIS WORK OF CREATION TO FULFILLMENT, TO FILL THE EARTH AND SUBDUE IT. AND TO HAVE DOMINION OVER EVERY LIVING THING THAT MOVES ON THE EARTH. THAT IS A MANIFEST TO US A COMMAND TO US THAT WE ARE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN TO US. THAT THROUGH OUR TOIL WE WILL NURTURE OUR WORK AND NURTURE OTHERS AND WE WILL ALSO SANCTIFY WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN TO US. BESIDES INSTITUTING THIS MEMORIAL POPE PIUS XII ALSO PROVIDED A BEAUTIFUL PRAYER FOR WORKERS EVERYWHERE. IT WAS AND STILL IS MEANT TO BE PRAYED DAILY. IT STARTS LIKE THIS. GLORIOUS PATRIARCH ST. JOSEPH, HUMBLE AND JUST, DESCENDENT OF NAZARETH, YOU GAVE TO ALL CHRISTIANS AND PARTICULARLY TO US AN EXAMPLE OF A PERFECT LIFE THROUGH DILIGENT LABOR AND ADMIRABLE UNION WITH JESUS AND MARY. ASSIST US IN OUR DAILY WORK IN ORDER THAT WE SEE IN IT AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF GLORIFYING GOD AND SANCTIFYING OURSELVES OF BEING A USEFUL AID TO THE SOCIETY IN WHICH WE LIVE. THESE SHOULD BE THE HIGHEST IDEALS FOR ALL OF OUR ACTIONS. AS PROCLAIMED IN ST. MATTHEWS GOSPEL, JESUS WAS KNOWN AS THE SON OF THE CARPENTER. ST. JOSEPH WAS NO DOUBT WELL KNOWN IN HIS COMMUNITY AND RESPECTED FOR HIS SKILLS AND GOOD WORK. ALTHOUGH HE WAS POOR, HE EXERCISED HIS CRAFT TO GLORIFY GOD AND TO BE IN SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY, HIS UNION WITH JESUS AND MARY WAS ADMIRABLY DEMONSTRATED THROUGH HIS DEEP FAITH AND COMMITMENT TO FOLLOW GOD’S WILL AND TO TAKE ON THE RESPONSIBILITY TO BE THE LEADER IN HIS FAMILY. TO BE THE PROTECTOR. IN FACT IF WE THINK ABOUT THE PROTECTOR OF THE 1ST CHURCH, JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH. HE DID NOT QUESTION GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS TO HIM WHEN GOD’S MESSENGERS CAME TO HIM IN DREAMS. TO EMBRACE AND TO WED MARY EVEN THOUGH SHE WAS PREGNANT AND FLEE TO EGYPT AND TO AVOID HEROD’S WRATH AND TO PROTECT THE HOLY FAMILY. HE WAS STRONG AND RESOLUTE AND THE PROTECTOR OF HIS FAMILY AND BEING CARING AND GENTLE OF HEART AND DEMONSTRATED ELSEWHERE IN THE GOSPEL WHEN HE THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO DIVORCE MARY HE WANTED TO DO SO QUIETLY SO AS NOT TO CAUSE HER ANY HARM OR DEAREST PROTECTOR OBTAIN FOR US FROM THE LORD HUMILITY AND SIMPLICITY OF HEART, LOVE FOR OUR WORK, KINDNESS TOWARDS OUR FELLOW LABORERS, AND CONFORMITY TO GOD’S WILL. IN THE UNAVOIDABLE TRIALS OF THIS LIFE TOGETHER WITH JOY IN BEARING THEM, RECOGNITION OF OUR SOCIAL MISSION AND A SENSE OF DOCILITY AND RESPECTFULNESS TOWARD SUPERIORS AND THE SPIRIT OF BROTHERHOOD TOWARDS OUR EQUALS. CHARITY, INDULGENCE FOR OUR DEPENDENCE. JESUS SPENT MOST OF HIS LIFE LEARNING THE MANUAL CARPENTER TRADE FROM ST. JOSEPH WHO GUIDED JESUS WITH LOVE AND WITH KINDNESS. WHAT THE GOSPELS D NOT RECORD ANY WORDS EXPRESSED BY ST. JOSEPH’S ACTIONS MUST’VE BEEN PROFOUND. FOLLOWING HIS FOSTER FATHER, JESUS ENTERED INTO THE WORLD OF HUMAN WORK. HE LEARNED FROM JOSEPH THE TRADE OF CARPENTRY. HE LEARNED FROM JOSEPH THE RELIGION, THE JEWISH RELIGION. HE ALSO LEARNED THE CONCEPT AND EXPERIENCED THE HUMAN CONCEPT OF FAMILY AND UNITY. IN ALL OF THIS IS DEMONSTRATING THE NOBILITY OF WORK IN ORDER THAT WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORK OF REDEMPTION THROUGH OUR WORK. FURTHER, THE POPE PIUS PRAYER. ACCOMPANY US IN TIMES OF PROSPERITY. WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY IS GIVEN FOR AN HONEST ENJOYMENT OF THE FRUITS OF OUR LABOR, SUSTAIN US IN OUR HOURS OF SADNESS AND WHEN HEAVEN SEEMS TO BE SHUT IN OUR REGARD AND EVEN THE VERY TOOLS WITH WHICH OUR HANDS TOIL APPEAR TO REBEL AGAINST US, NO DOUBT ST. JOSEPH EXPERIENCED TIMES OF GREAT JOY WITH MARY AND JESUS. THEY TOOK THEIR REST ON THEIR HOLY DAYS. NO DOUBT THERE WERE TIMES OF TURMOIL AND TREPIDATION. THE CHILD JESUS BEING LOST TO MARY AND HIM WHEN JESUS STAYED BEHIND IN THE TEMPLE. OR THE DANGEROUS JOURNEY TO EGYPT TO ESCAPE HEROD. YET ST. JOSEPH SO DEEP IN HIS FAITH SO TRUSTING IN GOD SUSTAINED HIM AND PROTECTED THE HOLY FAMILY. YET STILL MORE OF THE POPE PIUS PRAYER THE CONCLUDING PART. GRANT THAT IN IMITATION OF YOU WE MAY KEEP OUR EYES FIXED ON OUR MOTHER, MARY, YOUR DEAREST SPOUSE, WHO AS SHE SPUN SILENTLY IN THE CORNER OF YOUR SHOP WOULD LET THE SWEETEST SMILE COURSE OVER HER LIPS. MAY WE NEVER TAKE OUR EYES OFF OF JESUS WHO WAS BUSILY OCCUPIED WITH YOU AT THE CARPENTERS BENCH IN ORDER THAT WE IN A LIKE MANNER MAY LEAD ON EARTH A PEACEFUL AND HOLY LIFE. A PRELUDE TO THE LIFE OF ETERNAL HAPPINESS THAT AWAITS US IN HEAVEN FOREVER AND EVER. JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH, LIVED WITHIN THE INTIMACY AND LOVE OF THE FAMILY. THE 1ST CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. JOSEPH IS THE FOSTER FATHER, HUSBAND AND PROTECTOR AND THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF THE FAMILY. AND THE BLESSED VIRGIN THE MOTHER OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST PROVIDES THE PATHWAY TO JESUS FOR ALL OF US. SO ON THIS DAY WE VENERATE IN A VERY SPECIAL WAY, ST. JOSEPH AND WE ASK FOR HIS INTERCESSION TO HELP AND GUIDE US IN OUR DAILY EXPRESSION OF WORK. WE SHOULD ALSO REMEMBER THAT BEGINNING TODAY AND THROUGHOUT THE MONTH OF MAY THE MONTH OF LIFE AND MOTHERHOOD IT IS KNOWN AS MARY’S MONTH AND WITH HER AT HER BELOVED SPOUSE JOSEPH WE HAVE THE PERFECT INTERCESSORS TO HELP BRING US TO WHAT WE SHOULD THE TRUE SUMMIT OF OUR DESIGN TO BE IN UNITY AND EMBRACE OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. TODAY IS ALSO A GREAT DAY OF CELEBRATION FOR THE VENERATION OF ST. JOSEPH THE PATRON AND PROTECTOR OF OUR UNIVERSAL CHURCH. WE ARE HONORING HIM AS THE PATRON OF WORKERS NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THIS SPECIAL DAY AND BECAUSE IN TRADITION WE CELEBRATE JOSEPH ON WEDNESDAYS, IT IS ALSO TODAY THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH IN THE DIOCESE OF BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS YEAR OF GRACE BEGAN WITH THE PROCLAMATION BY BISHOP ROBERT BAKER ON MAY 16, 2018 FOR THE INTERCESSION OF ST. JOSEPH TO CONSTANTLY PRAY FOR THE CHURCH THAT THE CHURCH WOULD GROW AS PROFESSED IN THE NICENE CREED AS ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH. TO BE ONE CHURCH IN UNITY. RECOGNIZING AND RESPECTING OUR DIVERSITIES WITHIN OUR CHURCH BUT TO BE ONE CHURCH. ONE CHURCH FOR THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN FAITH JUST AS GOD IS ONE IN THE FATHER AND THE SON AND THE HOLY SPIRIT. TO GROW IN HOLINESS BY CALLING UPON ST. JOSEPH IN THIS UNIQUE YEAR TO BE OUR GUIDE OUR ADVOCATE AS BISHOP BAKER INDICATED TO ASK ST. JOSEPH TO INSPIRE US AND TO GO BOLDLY DOWN THE PATH OF HOLINESS BY LIVING EACH DAY IN GOD’S PRESENCE AND STRIVING TO DO ALL THINGS HOWEVER ORDINARY OR EVEN TEDIOUS THEY MAY BE AND TO DO THEM WELL. AND WITH LOVE. AND TO GROW AND WHAT IT MEANS TO BE CATHOLIC AND CATHOLIC MEANS UNIVERSAL. THE CHURCH IS HOME FOR ALL PEOPLE. WHEREVER THEY MAY BE. AND TO GROW IN A APOSTOLIC ZEAL THAT CALLS US TO BE FAITHFUL DISCIPLES OF OUR LORD AND TO STRIVE TO BE GOOD AND PROFOUND WITNESS TO OUR FAITH IN WHAT WE SAY AND WHAT WE DO. THIS YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH WAS CHOSEN TO CLOSE ON THIS DAY THIS MOST WONDERFUL DAY THE MEMORIAL OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER.
