CST SaintsTrainingCamp – 08/14/16 Practice 14

SPORTS TV. I’M MIKE NABORS HERE WITH YOUR TRAINING CAMP MINUTE. ♪>>>TIS SUNDAY BUT IT IS NOT AN OFF DAY FOR THE BLACK AND GOLD AND THE SAINTS BACK AT IT FOR A PRODUCTIVE PRACTICE HERE AT GREENBRIER. I’M MIKE NABORS CONTINUING THE COVERAGE OF TRAINING CAMP 2016. THIS STARTED IN LATE JULY BUT HERE WE ARE MID-AUGUST AND THE BLACK AND GOLD STILL AT IT HERE IN THE MOUNTAINS OF WEST VIRGINIA AND OTHER THREE PRACTICES LEFT. AND SOME DIDN’T PRACTICE BUT THE GOOD NEWS AS WE HIT THE HIGHLIGHTS, C.J. SPILLER BACK AFTER MISSING YESTERDAY. NOW THE SAINTS STILL FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE HIGH ENERGY NOW FOR THE VETERANS. THE TEMPS HERE IN GREENBRIER AND THE ROOKIES, THEIR HEADS ARE SPINNING BUT WE ASKED VETERAN MAX UNGER WHERE THE TEAM’S MINDSET IS IN THIS JUNCTURE OF CAMP?>>YOU HAVE TO REALIZE YOU HAVE TO GET A LOT OF WORK DONE AND WE’RE GOING ON ANOTHER ROAD TRIP AND YOU HAVE TO REALIZE THAT WE ARE STILL IN TRAINING CAMP RIGHT NOW AND WE’RE STILL JUST DOING — WE’RE STILL GETTING WORK DONE AND SCHEDULES WILL BE DIFFERENT AND THE PRACTICE TIMES WILL BE DIFFERENT BUT AT THE SAN DIEGO OF — AT THE END OF THE D WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO GET IT DONE. >>WE CAN’T SHOW YOU HIGHLIGHTS BUT EARLIER IN THE CAMP HERE IS ROOKIE MICHAEL THOMAS HAULING IN A GREAT CATCH AND TODAY HE HAD A SIMILAR OVER THE SHOULDER ONE-HANDED GRAB AND I ASKED HOW HIS DAILY HIGHLIGHTS HAVE BECOME ROUTINE. >>I’M NOT ANTICIPATED A LOT OF ONE-HANDED CATCHES. I I WANT TO SEE THAT ONE ON TAPE. YESTERDAY HE WENT UP WITH ONE HAND AND WASN’T ABLE TO COME DOWN WITH IT AND IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN TWO HANDS. SO HE IS PRODUCTIVE. HE COMPETES FOR THE BALL. HE IS ABLE TO HIGH-POINT THE BAL BALL. AND WHAT WE SAID WHEN WE DRAFTED HIM, HE IS COMFORTABLE WHEN IT IS CONTESTED. >>MICHAEL THOMAS CONTINUES TO AMAZE. >>>AND NOW ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE, THE NEWEST SAINT IS CORTLAND FINNEGAN. AN ALL PRO BACK IN 2008 AND BEEN AROUND THE LEAGUE AND CONTEMPLATED RETIREMENT BUT STEPPED OUT TO PLAY FOR THE PANTHERS A YEAR AGO AND HIS TEAMMATE WAS ROMAN HARPER AND SO I ASKED DID HE GET A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION BY HIS FRIEND. >>WE CAME IN THE SAME YEAR SO I DON’T KNOW IF IT IS A RECOMMENDATION BUT HE TALKS HIGHLY OF THIS ORGANIZATION AND DAYS ARE SO VALUED AND TIME IS PRECIOUS AND EVERY DAY YOU GET TO DO SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE IS ADDED VALUE TO YOUR LIFE. >>HE DIDN’T NEED HELP AND HIS RESUME WAS IMPRESSIVE BUT THERE WERE RED FLAGS. WHEN YOU THINK OF CORTLAND FINNEGAN, YOU THINK OF THIS NOVEMBER 2010 AWKWARD BRAWL WITH ANDRE JOHNSON AND THE MOST INFAMOUS REPUTATION OF BEING A DIRTY PLAYER AND ONE HE DOESN’T AGREE WITH OR HIDE FROM EITHER. >>FROM THE WAY I PLAY WITH EMOTION AND GRIT AND KIND OF JUST OLD-SCHOOL, YOU KIND OF THINK THIS GUY IS ONE WAY AND THEN WHEN YOU MEET HIM, IT IS TOTALLY OPPOSITE. THAT IS JUST THE WAY LIFE IS. AND SOMETIMES YOU GET A BAD IMPRESSION THE FIRST TIME AND THAT STICKS WITH YOU SO YOU TRY TO CHANGE PEOPLE’S OPINION OF YOU JUST BY MEETING AND BEING YOU. AND THAT IS WHAT I HAVE DONE. I’VE STAYED OUT OF THE PERSONAL FOUL BUSINESS FOR IN YEARS NOW AND TRYING TO BE A GOOD TEAMMATE AND ALWAYS THOUGHT I WAS AND PLAYING THE GAME FAIRLY BUT PLAYING WITH EDGE AS WELL. >>HE ACCEPTS HIS PAST WHICH INCLUDES A BRIEF RETIREMENT FROM THE GAME BEFORE HE SIGNED WITH THE PANTHERS LAST SEASON. BOTTOM LINE, THIS VETERAN GREW TIRED OF LOSING. >>YOU ARE NOT SURE THE ORGANIZATION OR WHATEVER IT IS, YOU PUT IN SO MUCH WORK, I DON’T THINK THE YEARS AND THE OFF-SEASON THAT YOU SEE AND YOU PUT IN SO MUCH TIME AND EFFORT AND YOU COME UP 8-8 AND 7-9, 6-10 AND YOU ONLY MAKE THE PLAYOFFS ONCE AND YOU ARE — YOUR CAREER GETS TO IT ARE WE IN IT FOR THE SAME THING AND WITH THE UPPER MANAGEMENT AND YOU ARE NOT SURE AND SOMETIMES IT IS HARDER ON YOUR BODY AND IT IS A TOLL AND YOU HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION — IT IS JUST — I DON’T KNOW. >>HE HELPED THE PANTHERS REACH THE SUPER BOWL. NOW HE IS POISED TO HELP THE SAINTS D. REACH RESPECT ABILITY AGAIN. >>THIS IS A GREAT TIME. THEY HAVE A GREAT YOUNG GROUP. AND LIKE I SAID, YOU COULD ADD VALUE OFF THE FOOTBALL FIELD IN THE CLASSROOM AND ON — AND YOU GIVE THE TEAM THAT THEY COULD USE. >>ENJOYED TALKING TO HIM TODAY. VERY UPFRONT ABOUT HIS REPUTATION. WE’LL HAVE MORE ON THAT LATER IN THE SHOW. AND NEXT OUR CAMP COUNSELOR AND THIS TIME WE HAVE A PLAYING, A RISING STAR AND RETURN MAN AND RUNNIN>>>WELCOME BACK TO CST COVERAGE OF TRAINING CAMP 2016 AND TIME FOR THE NIGHTLY CAMP COUNSELOR AND JOINING US IS SECOND YEAR RETURN MAN AND RUNNING BACK MARCUS MURPHY, HAVE YOU BEEN A CAMP COUNSELOR BEFORE. ARE YOU READY FOR THIS. >>I HAVEN’T. BUT I’M READY. >>SECOND TRAINING CAMP, HOW MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE ARE YOU COMPARED TO A YEAR AGO IN WEST VIRGINIA. >>I’M A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE. I’M COMFORTABLE WITH THE SCHEME AND THE PLAYBOOK WILL CLICK AND I COULD LINE UP AT PLAY AT 100%, 100 MILES PER HOUR. >>AND SEAN PAYTON WAS ASKED WHERE YOU IMPROVED THE MOST AND HE SAID AT THE RUNNING BACK POSITION AND HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU IN THAT POSITION. >>I’M A LOT MORE CONFIDENT. I HAD A COUPLE OF SNAPS IN THE BACKFIELD LAST YEAR BUT I HAD THE INJURY LAST YEAR THAT KIND OF PUT THAT TO A HALT. BUT THIS YEAR I’M JUST LOOKING TO COME OUT AND GET BETTER EVERY DAY. I’VE LEARNED A LOT FROM THE VETS IN THE ROOM AND I JUST WANT TO CONTINUE TO IMPROVE ON THE FIELD. >>I WANT TO ASK YOU THIS, BECAUSE THE RETURN AGAINST THE PATRIOTS, YOU DROPPED THE BALL AND AS A RETURNER WHEN YOU GO TO THE SIDELINE, DO YOU ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE OR DWELL ON DROPPING IT OR HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT A PLAY LIKE THAT?>>EITHER WAY, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE, YOU HAVE TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT PLAY AND FOCUS ON WHAT YOU ARE DOING AT THE TIME. BUT — I MEAN, JUST GOING BACK AND LOOKING AT IT, YOU ALWAYS HAVE TO FIX THE NEGATIVE. THE POSITIVE, THAT IS SOMETHING YOU CAN REWARD YOURSELF AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT, BUT THE NEGATIVE IS THE STUFF YOU HAVE TO REALLY WORK ON AND GET BETTER. SO I DON’T KNOW IF YOU SAW ME TODAY BUT I WAS LIKE 20, 25 PUNT AND I KNOW I DROPPED THE BALL, THAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE RETURN OF THE BALL, TO PROTECT THE BALL AND CATCH IT AND I WANT TO PERFECT MY CRAFT AND NOT COME OUT AND DROP THE BALL. I HAD A GOOD RETURN BUT THE MAIN FOCUS IS CATCHING THE BALL FIRST. >>IS PASS PROTECTION THE HARDEST THING TO GET A HANDLE ON AS A YOUNG RUNNING BACK IN THIS LEAGUE?>>I THINK IT IS — AS IT CAN BE, BUT AT THE END IT IS ALL ABOUT THE DOG AND THE FIGHT. YOU HAVE TO COME OUT AND JUST WANT TO — YOU HAVE TO WANT TO WIN. GOING AGAINST LINEBACKERS, ESPECIALLY MY SIZE, COMING AGAINST BIGGER LINEBACKERS, YOU HAVE TO HAVE THE WILL. YOU HAVE TO GO IN WITH THE FIGHT AND WITH THE MINDSET THAT YOU ARE GOING TO WIN THE BATTLE. I’M GOOD WITH MY — WITH KEYING THE PROTECTION AND FINDING THE BLITZER, I WANT TO IMPROVE ON THE STRIKES AND JUST PHYSICALITY ON THE — ON THE PASS PART. >>I’VE COVERED SEAN PAYTON SINCE DAY ONE WHEN HE ARRIVED IN NEW ORLEANS AND I NEVER HEARD WHAT I SAID ABOUT YOU IN TRAINING CAMP AS EARLY AS HE SAID LAST YEAR, IS THAT HE IS GOING TO MAKE THIS FOOTBALL TEAM AND WHEN HE SAID THAT, HOW MUCH CONFIDENCE DID THAT GIVE YOU AND HOW DID THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?>>IT GAVE ME A LOT OF CONFIDENCE. IT MADE ME FEEL GREAT AS A PLAYER. I CAME IN WITH THE MINDSET I WOULD GIVE IT ALL MY ALL NO MATTER WHAT IT TOOK. AND I THINK I SHOWED THEM SOME GOOD THINGS LAST YEAR AND HE SAID I WAS A GOOD PLAYER AND SAID I WOULD MAKE THE ROSTER AND IT JUST GAVE ME — LIKE I SAID, IT GAVE ME THE FIGHT. I KNEW WHAT I WAS GOING INTO, MAKING THE 53-MAN ROSTER AND I HAD TO COME OUT AND CONTINUE TO SHOW WHAT I SHOWED OUT ALREADY. >>AND YOUR DWRAFT CLASS SHOWED UP LAST YEAR AND YOU WANT TO MAKE THE JUMP AND EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE PLAYING DIFFERENT POSITIONS, DO YOU TALK ABOUT WE DID WELL LAST YEAR BUT LET’S TAKE ANOTHER STEP THIS YEAR. >>I THINK THAT ALL OF THE GUYS THAT CAME IN WITH ME LAST YEAR, WE HAVE THE MINDSET, IT IS YEAR TWO AND WE’RE MORE COMFORTABLE IN THE SYSTEM AND WE KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND WE HAVE TO SHOW PROGRESS AND COME OUT AND WE’RE NOT ROOKIES ANY MORE SO WE HAVE TO HANDLE OURSELVES LIKE A VET. WE HAVE TO COME OUT AND DO THE RIGHT THINGS AND KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON AND JUST BE — BE ABLE TO GO FULL SPEED. >>YOU LOOK AT THE COMPETITION IN THIS CAMP, RUNNING BACK AND THAT MAY BE THE MOST CROWDED IN TERMS OF TALENT AND COMPETITION AND TELL US HOW THE COMPETITION IS MAKING YOU BETTER. >>IT IS A LOT OF COMPETITION. WE ARE VERY COMPETITIVE AND IT IS A LOT OF TALENT AND ABILITY IN THE RUNNING BACK ROOM. SO WE JUST FEED OFF OF EACH OTHER. WE KNOW AS A RUNNING BACK GROUP, WE CAN BRING THAT SPARK TO THE OFFENSE SO WE JUST WANT TO COME OUT AND JUST COMPETE AGAINST — NOT REALLY COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER AND PUSH EACH OTHER. AND THAT BRINGS OUT THE BEST IN EVERYBODY. SO WE’RE JUST GOING TO KEEP GOING AND TRYING TO GET BETTER EVERY DAY. >>AND LET’S START WHERE WE FINISHED OR FINISH WHERE WE STARTED AND YOU TALKED ABOUT THIS SECOND CAMP, IS THIS GOING BY FASTER BECAUSE YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE. >>I FEEL LIKE IT IS MOVING FAST. I REMEMBER JUST GETTING HERE ABOUT TO RUN THE CONDITIONING TEST AND NOW IT IS — IT IS ALMOST OVER. SO — BUT I THINK WE’VE DONE A GOOD JOB AS A TEAM, GROWING. I THINK WE LOOK PRETTY GOOD, THE OTHER NIGHT AGAINST NEW ENGLAND. AND WE JUST — LIKE I SAID, JUST TRYING TO SHOW PROGRESS AND TRYING TO GET BETTER EVERY DAY. >>I DON’T KNOW IF YOU HAVE BEEN A CAMP COUNSELOR BUT THAT WAS QUALITY CAMP COUNSELING. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. >>THANK YOU. >>>COMING UP>>>WELCOME BACK TO CST COVERAGE OF SAINTS TRAINING CAMP 2016 AND END WITH THE NIGHTLY QUOTE OF THE DAY AND WE HAVE TO GO BACK TO THE PRESS CONFERENCE OF CORTLAND FINNEGAN. HE HAS BEEN CALLED A LOT OF NAMES IN HIS 11-YEAR CAREER IN THE NFL BUT WITH THE QUOTE OF THE NIGHT HE GIVES US A NAME HE’S HEARD MAYBE THE MOST.>>WHEN YOUR REPUTATION IS YOU ARE A DIRT BAG, YOU DEFINITELY WANT TO — YOU HOPE TO THINK THAT YOU ADD SOME VALUE IN THE REAL LIFE TO THE LOCKER ROOM. YOU GUYS PROBABLY THINK THAT.>>RARE TO FIND AN ATHLETE THAT HONEST ABOUT HIS REPUTATION. WELL WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK HIMOND OUR CAMP COUNSELOR AND I’M MIKE NABORS AND WE’LL
