CST Saints Training Camp – 08/10/15

♪♪>>>YET MORE GREENBRIER GOODNESS HERE IN WEST VIRGINIA. THE SAINTS HITTING THE FIELD THIS MORNING. FOGGY OVERCAST SKIES FURTHER PROOF THAT THIS WEATHER IS THE BEST OF ANY TRAINING CAMP SITE IN THE NFL. I’M MIKE NABORS HERE AT THE GREENBRIER, SAINTS TRAINING CAMP 2015. THE HEAT INDEX IN NEW ORLEANS WAS 103 DEGREES THIS MORNING. AT THE SAME TIME IT WAS 73 DEGREES HERE AT THE GREENBRIER. SEAN PAYTON HAPPY WITH THE TEMPO AGAIN AT THIS MORNING’S WORKOUT. THERE’S HEAT ON SEVERAL STAGES ESPECIALLY THOSE ON THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE FOOTBALL. THAT UNIT LAST YEAR RANK 31st. THEY HAVE A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER AS THEY ENTER THIS SEASON OF PLAY. THE SAINTS RESHUFFLED THE DECK IN THE OFF-SEASON. BRENDAN BROWNER LOOKS TO BE A MAINSTAY OPPOSITE KEENAN LEWIS. A LOT OF LINEBACKERS UP THERE. BUT IF YOU TALK TO THE VETERANS ON THIS TEAM, THEY ENTER THE TRAINING CAMP WITH A PURPOSE ON GETTING BETTER FROM A YEAR AGO. >>YOU GOT TO THROW ALL THAT OUT, TAKE IT ONE DAY AT A TIME. LIKE WE SAID LAST YEAR, EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD ON PAPER, BUT THE LIGHTS TURN ON. HOPEFULLY WE’VE GOT THE RIGHT GUYS IN HERE WITH THE ADDITION OF BROWNER, SPENCER, ALL THE NEW GUYS, ALL THE ROOKIES. WE BROUGHT IN THE GUYS THAT CAN HELP US WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. THOSE GUYS WORK AND THAT’S WHAT WE NEED. >>SPEAKING OF THE SAINTS DEFENSE, THEY HAD A NICE MORNING WORKOUT IN 11 ON 11 DRILLS. COVERING MARQUES COLSTON AND BUSH CONTINUES TO HAVE A GREAT CAMP WITH A BREAKUP OF HIS OWN. YOU HAVE DAVID HAWTHORNE, STEPHEN ANTHONY PLAYING, THEN ANOTHER ELLERBE. HE’S FACED INJURIES AND IS BACK AT IT THE PAST FEW DAYS. HE CAME OVER TO NEW ORLEANS IN THAT KENNY STILLS TRADE. HE’S BATTLED A LOT BUT ENTERED THIS YEAR WITH A LOT TO PROVE. >>I KNOW WHAT I CAN DO. YOU KNOW, WHEN YOU’RE GONE FOR A YEAR, PEOPLE SEEM TO FORGET. BUT WHEN YOU GET BACK OUT THERE, IT’S LIKE SECOND NATURE.>>IT REALLY DIDN’T MATTER WHERE I WENT. I WOULD HAVE HAD A CHIP ON MY SHOULDER. I HAVE A CHIP ON MY SHOULDER EVERY YEAR. BUT JUST BEING THE FACT THAT THE DEFENSE HAS A CHIP ON THEIR SHOULDER MAKES IT THAT MUCH SWEETER. WE CAN ALL GROW TOGETHER, AND FIGHT TOGETHER. >>SEAN PAYTON IS TRYING TO GET HIS TEAM READY FOR EXHIBITION PLAY THURSDAY NIGHT AT BALTIMORE, TRYING TO TRANSITION INTO THEIR PRACTICE ROUTINE INTO PREPARING FOR THOSE RAVENS. AT THIS POINT IN CAMP ALL THE SAINTS ARE TIRED OF HITTING THE OTHER, AND THAT INCLUDES MAYBE MORE SO THAN ANYBODY IS DEFENSIVE LINEMEN. MAX UNGER AND TERRON ARMSTEAD. HE’S FEELING MORE COMFORTABLE WHICH COULD BE BAD NEWS FOR ANYBODY PLAYING THE SIX. >>MORE TECHNIQUE THAN ANYTHING. JUST DOING IT. MORE AND MORE REPS HAVE HELPED OUT A LOT. >>TALK ABOUT YOUR RISING STARS, THE SAINTS HOTTEST COMMODITY MIGHT BE TERRON ARMSTEAD WHO IS POISED FOR A BREAKOUT SEASON. APPRECIATED BY HIS TEAM BUT WHO HAS FLOWN UNDER THE RADAR NATIONALLY. >>HE’S A PLAYER, I’M NOT GOING TO USE THE WORD “UNDERRATED,” BUT MAN, I’M TELLING YOU WHAT, HE’S REALLY DONE A LOT OF THINGS WE LOOKED FOR AND HOPED FOR WHEN WE DRAFTED HIM IN THE THIRD ROUND. HE’S ATHLETIC, HE’S SMART. AND I THINK HIS SKILL SET FOR THAT POSITION IS OUTSTANDING. >>I’M STILL LEARNING EVERY DAY. STILL A LOT OF THINGS THAT I’M TRYING TO IMPROVE ON. THE SMALLER DETAILS, I’M NOW GETTING TO, RUNNING ROUTES AND THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT I’M STILL LEARNING ALL THE SMALL STUFF, TOO. >>PROTECTING DREW BREES’ BLIND SIDE IS NO JOKE AND SOMETHING ARMSTEAD TAKES GREAT PRIDE IN. LAST SEASON ALLOWING ONLY THREE SACKS ALLOWING HIS LINEMATES TO REALIZE HOW HIGH HIS CEILING COULD BE. >>HE COULD BE AS GOOD — I DON’T EVEN WANT TO SAY AS GOOD AS HE WANTS TO BE BECAUSE I KNOW HE WANTS TO BE A GREAT PLAYER. THERE IS NO CEILING FOR HIM. HE COULD BE ONE OF THE BEST OF ALL TIME. HE REALLY COULD. I BELIEVE THAT. >>HE’S AS ATHLETIC AS THEY COME, BUT WHAT MAKES HIM DANGEROUS IS HIS GROWING CONFIDENCE. HE’S PLAYING MORE AND THINKING LESS. >>THE SNAP SLOWED DOWN FOR ME A LITTLE BIT MORE. LEARNING GUYS’ STANCES AND DEFENSIVE ALIGNMENTS HELPED ME OUT MORE.>>WE’LL FIND OUT IF YEAR THREE IS THE CHARM FOR TERRON ARMSTEAD. STAY TUNED.>>>COMING UP NEXT OUR DAILY CAMP COUNSELOR. WE BRING IN JEFF DUNCAN WHO NEVER SHIES AWAY FROM>>>WE CONTINUE HERE AT THE GREENBRIER. ONE OF OUR DAILY SEGMENTS, CAMP COUNSELOR. START OFF WITH THE GREENBRIER. A LOT OF FINGERS POINTING AT WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SAINTS TEAM A YEAR AGO, SOME SAY TRAINING CAMP IS TOO SOFT. BUT SEAN WAS QUICK TO SAY YOU HAVE TO PICK YOUR BATTLES WHEN IT COMES TO THIS PLACE. >>I UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE MIGHT VIEW THIS AS A COUNTRY CLUB SETTING, AND IT IS A VERY, VERY NICE SETTING FOR A TRAINING CAMP, BUT I REALLY THINK THAT IS BASICALLY IRRELEVANT TOWARD HOW THIS TEAM PLAYS ON THE FIELD. I’VE COVERED THE TEAM A NUMBER OF YEAR, MIKE, WHEN THEY WERE DOWN IN THIBODEAU, LOUISIANA, IN TERRIBLE CONDITIONS AND THEY HAD A TERRIBLE SEASON BECAUSE OF IT. I DON’T THINK IT TRANSLATES TO WINS AND LOSSES. IF YOU TALK TO THE VETERANS ON THIS TEAM WHO HAVE BEEN IN OTHER CAMPS, THEY SAY IT HELPS THIS TEAM DOWN THE ROAD BECAUSE THEY’RE NOT WORN OUT BY MIDSEASON, THEIR LEGS ARE STILL FRESH. I’M BELIEVING PEOPLE ARE KIND OF SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING THERE. >>SEAN PAYTON GETS LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER. NO RAIN WHEN IT LOOKED LIKE RAIN IN THE FORECAST. YOU’VE BEEN OUT HERE A FEW DAYS NOW. DIFFERENT TONE IN THIS CAMP. A YEAR AGO THEY’RE ANSWERING QUESTIONS WITH THE SUPER BOWL. DREW BREES IS TALKING ABOUT PLAYING TILL HE’S 46. THERE’S A CHIP ON OUR SHOULDER, WE’RE FOCUSED. TO ME, THERE’S A PALPABLE DIFFERENCE IN THIS CAMP. >>THEY’RE HUMBLED, I THINK, AND VERY MUCH HAVE A BUSINESSLIKE APPROACH, THE PROPER ATTITUDE GOING INTO THIS SEASON. THINGS REALLY GOT OUT OF HAND AND EVERYBODY, MEDIA INCLUDED, KIND OF DRANK THE KOOL-AID ON THIS TEAM. THEY’RE FLYING UNDER THE RADAR. WE HAVEN’T HAD A LOT OF NATIONAL MEDIA IN. PEOPLE ARE LOOKING ELSEWHERE. I THINK IT’S GOOD FOR THIS TEAM RIGHT NOW. THEY’VE GOT A LOT OF YOUNG PLAYERS. WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN IS GETTING A TON OF HYPE. I LIKE THE ATTITUDE I’M SEEING SO FAR. >>TALK ABOUT YOUR LATEST COLUMN BROUGHT UP A POINT, WE’VE SEEN OUT HERE YOU HAVE TWO FIRST ROUND PICKS FOR THE SAINTS, ANDRUS PEAT AND STEPHONE ANTHONY. >>THE TALK OF THE CAMP HAS BEEN STEPHONE ANTHONY. HE’S WAY AHEAD OF SCHEDULE KNOWING THE DEFENSIVE PLAYBOOK. A GUY THAT’S BEEN NOT ONLY INSERTED INTO THE FIRST TEAM DEFENSE BUT HE’S CALLING THE PLAYS IN THE HUDDLE. THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES TO HIS MATURITY. ANDRUS PEAT, WE’VE ALL TALKED ABOUT IT. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A DEVELOPMENTAL PROSPECT WHEN HE CAME IN. THAT’S HARD FOR FANS TO WRAP THEIR HEAD AROUND. BUT IT HAPPENS AT THAT POSITION IN PARTICULAR. HE’S A YOUNG GUY THAT CAME OUT AFTER HIS JUNIOR YEAR. HE’S YOUNG EVEN FOR HIS CLASS. THEY LOOKED AT HIM LONG-TERM AS AN ANSWER FOR THE OFFENSIVE LINE. THE WAY JON STINCHCOMB DIDN’T CONTRIBUTE MUCH HIS FIRST TWO YEARS BUT ENDED UP BEING PRO BOWL. HE’S GOT TO GET HIS CONDITIONING IN SHAPE. HE’S GOT TO GET IN BETTER SHAPE. RIGHT NOW IT’S VERY DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO EVEN FINISH A PRACTICE. >>LET’S TALK ABOUT THE GUY WHO WE HAVEN’T SEEN OUT HERE IN THE PRACTICE, RUNNING NOW AND THEN IS JARUS BYRD. EASY TO LOOK AT HIS SITUATION AND WONDER IS HE REALLY THAT HURT, ARE THEY RESTING HIM. BUT IT’S A BIG QUESTION IN CAMP.>>THEY’RE PAYING HIM A LOT OF MONEY. HE’S EXPECTED TO BE THE QUARTERBACK BACK THERE IN SECONDARY. EVERY DAY HE MISSES IS A LOST OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP COHESIVENESS WITH KENNY VACCARO AND RAPHAEL BUSH AND THE QUARTERBACKS ON THE BACK END. HE DIDN’T PLAY A LOT OF FOOTBALL FOR THIS TEAM LAST YEAR. HE ONLY PLAYED FOUR GAMES BEFORE HE WAS INJURED. EVERYBODY AND PROBABLY JARS INCLUDED WOULD LOVE TO SEE HIM ON THE FIELD AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. HE’S NOT A YOUNG GUY. HIS HEAD WILL BE SWIMMING. HE’LL BE FINAL MENTALLY BUT PHYSICALLY GETTING HIM IN GAME SHAPE. THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO GET OUT HERE. >>WE ASKED OUR COUNSELORS THIS QUESTION, GETTING DIFFERENT ANSWERS. MANY IFS ON THIS FOOTBALL TEAM. MANY MORE THAN WE’VE SEEN IN THE SEAN PAYTON ERA. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST IF FOR YOU THEY’LL HAVE TO RETAIN TO BE SUCCESSFUL?>>THEIR DEPTH IS A HUGE QUESTION MARK. THE STARTING UNITS ON BOTH SUICIDES OF THE BALL LOOK OKAY TO ME. BUT THE OFFENSIVE LINE I THINK, CORNERBACK, YOU GOT A LOT OF UNKNOWNS. THEY CAN’T AFFORD INJURIES AT CERTAIN SPOTS. EVERY TEAM IN THE LEAGUE CAN SAY THAT. BUT SO MANY YOUNG PLAYERS THAT ARE REALLY UNPROVEN AT THE NFL LEVEL. THERE’S A LOT OF POTENTIAL THERE, BUT EARLY ON, IF THEY HAVE SOME INJURES TO VETERANS, YOU’LL BE THROWING YOUNG GUYS INTO SPOTS THEY HAVEN’T BEEN IN BEFORE AND THAT’S ALWAYS RISKY. >>TALK ABOUT YOUR COVERAGE ON NOLA.COM. BUSY EVERY DAY. >>NO, IT’S FUN. WE BLANKET COVERAGE. WE’RE GETTING ABOUT 15, 16 STORIES A DAY UP ON OUR WEBSITE, NOLA.COM. PEOPLE CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF THE SAINTS. WORKING HARD, BUT I WOULDN’T WANT TO BE ANYWHERE>>>WELCOME BACK TO OUR COVERAGE HERE AT GREENBRIER. IT’S OUR LAST SEGMENT. TIME FOR OUR QUOTE OF THE DAY. WE GO TO THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF FOOTBALL. ONE OF THE GREAT SAINTS STORIES OUT HERE IS DEFENSIVE LINEMAN K SARKS SIM. HE GREW UP IN GERMANY. ACTUALLY GREW UP ROOTING FOR THE FOOTBALL OF THE SOCCER VARIETY. I ASKED HIM WHO WAS HIS NFL ROLE MODEL GROWING UP. IT MAY SURPRISE YOU. >>RAY LEWIS WAS ALWAYS A GREAT INSPIRATION TO ME. FUNNY BECAUSE YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS SAYING BUT HE WAS ALWAYS SO INTENSE. I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE HIM. ALWAYS THAT GUY YOU WERE LOOKING UP TO BUT COULDN’T REALLY WATCH HIM. >>PRETTY TOPICAL STUFF. THE SAINTS PLAY IN BALTIMORE ON THURSDAY. MAYBE THAT NIGHT YOU’LL GET A CHANCE TO MEET YOUR ROLE MODEL RAY LEWIS. THAT WRAPS UP TODAY’S SHOW. WE’D LIKE TO THANK JEFF DUNC
