by the terebinth of Mamre, as he sat in the

three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he ran
from the entrance of the tent to greet them and bowing
to the ground he said, “Sir, if I may
ask you this favor “please do not go on
past your servant. “Let some water be brought
that you may bathe your feet, “and then rest yourselves
under the tree. “Now that you have come
this close to your servant, “let me bring you a little food “that you may refresh yourselves “and afterward you
may go on your way.” The men replied, “Very
well, do as you have said.” Abraham hastened into
the tent and told Sarah, “Quick, three measures
of fine flour. “Knead it and make rolls.” He ran to the herd, picked
out a tender, choice steer and gave it to a servant,
who quickly prepared it. Then Abraham got
some curds and milk as well as the steer
that had been prepared, and set these before
the three men. And he waited on them under
the tree while they ate. They asked Abraham, “Where
is your wife, Sarah?” He replied, “There in the tent.” One of them said, “I will surely return to you

Glory to you, oh Lord. – Jesus entered a village where a woman whose name
was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary, who sat beside the Lord at his
feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much
serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my
sister has left me by myself “to do all the serving? “Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious “and worried about many things. “There is need of
only one thing. “Mary has chosen the better part “and it will not
be taken from her.” The gospel of the Lord. – [Congregation] Praise be
to you Lord Jesus Christ. – As human beings we
have this tendency to fall into a
either/or attitude. Either prayer or action. Either human or spiritual. Either saint or sinner. In reality though, Catholicism
is a faith of both/and. Yes, we are called to be
saints, but my friends, saints are simply sinners
who keep on trying. The human and the spiritual, they’re not opposed
to each other either. In fact, our faith
tells us to be spiritual means to be fully human. And prayer and action, they’re
not separate from each other. The catechism of the
Catholic Church puts it we pray as we live because
we live as we pray, and so in today’s gospel, Martha she has slipped
into an either/or attitude. She is serving, which is
a very, very good thing. She is tending towards an
attitude of either prayer or active service, and yet
she’s anxious and frustrated and she takes this frustration
out on her sister Mary. So she asks Christ to tell
her sister to help her serve. This is a very common
occurrence in our lives. We do good things, but in
some way we always, possibly, do them for the wrong motives. Sometimes we do them because
we want to be admired. Sometimes we do
something because we
want to be appreciated and we get upset with
others when they don’t seem to be pulling their weight, and then Jesus corrects
this viewpoint. He doesn’t criticize
her for her serving. He doesn’t say that we should
ask others to do their part, but he asks her and
all of us to remember why we do what we do. These things that we’re
called to do my friends, it’s meant to be
done out of love. And love means to choose the
good for the other person, even if we are not noticed
or appreciated for it. You know every
action in our lives is a window into eternity, and every action
is a chance for us to love God and our neighbor. And every act is a way to
put prayer into action, and every action
can become a prayer. So my friends, the key is
to remember why we are doing whatever we are doing. I believe in one God, the father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible
and invisible. I believe in one
Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten son of God, born of the father
before all ages. God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the father. Through him all
things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was
incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death
and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with
the scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom
will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
father and the son, who with the father and the
son is adored and glorified, who has spoken
through the prophets. I believe in one holy
Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the
resurrection of the dead and the life of the
