Alexandre Cavalière – Jazz Violin Vibrato (Lesson Excerpt)

When it comes to vibrato, it’s quite free in jazz music. Freedom is one of the great aspects of jazz. However, we generally don’t use a classical vibrato. I personally don’t even know how to do it. I think in classical music, it’s generally quite fast. This kind of vibrato is usually not used in jazz. I personally never do it. We practically never hear it. We usually keep notes quite plain. We generally use very little vibrato. Especially in modern jazz. We can have a very short vibrato. We would never do something like this. It should be much more subtle. Here, I don’t even use vibrato. A little one. But it’s very short and not very powerful. It’s just to give a little bit of an effect to the note. No exaggeration. That’s what you have to remember: don’t exaggerate. Use vibrato if you want, but not too much, and not all the time.
