0828 KC Blitz Week 4

DAN HELLO EVERYONE AND WELCOME TO K-C BLITZ PREGAME. I’M DAN LUCY ALONGSIDE OF MATT VEREEN AND FOR THE NEXT HALF HOUR OR SO WE’RE GOING TO GET YOU READY FOR THE FOURTH AND FINAL PRESEASON GAME OF THE EXHIBITION CAMPAIGN. AND THE CHIEFS WILL BE TRYING TO WIN AND EVEN UP THEIR RECORD AT 2-AND-2. LAST SATURDAY AT HOME, THE CHIEFS LOST THEIR SECOND STRAIGHT EXHIBITION GAME TO THE 49ERS. K-C SIGNED FREE AGENT DE’ANTHONY THOMAS BRINGING HIM BACK TO THE CHIEFS AND HE WAS GETTING HIS FIRST ACTION. AND HE DIDN’T WAIT LONG TO IMPACT THE GAME. POPPING THE NINERS ON THE OPENING KICKOFF. AND THE MAN WAS CLEARLY FIRED UP TO BE BACK OUT THERE MAKING PLAYS IN ARROWHEAD. THE 49ERS STILL DROVE DOWN INTO CHIEFS TERRITORY. BUT THE CHIEFS FORCE FOURTH AND ONE AND CHRIS JONES BATS DOWN THE PASS TO FORCE THE TURNOVER. PUTS THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF THE OFFENSE. THEY’VE GOT DAMIEN WILLIAMS BACK FOR THE FIRST TIME, AND THEY WASTED NO TIME USING HIM. PATRICK MAHOMES FINDS HIM ON THE SCREEN AND WILLIAMS GOES 66-YARDS TO THE HOUSE. SO A THEME OF RETURNING PLAYERS STEPPING UP. CHIEFS LEAD 7-0. BUT WITH 4:30 LEFT IN THE OPENING QUARTER, JIMMY GAROPPOLO EXPOSES THE SECONDARY. REGGIE RAGLAND AND CHAVARIUS WARD BLOW THE ASSIGNMENT ON MATT BREIDA WHO MAKES A GREAT DIVING TOUCHDOWN CATCH. THAT TIED THE GAME UP, AND SAN FRANCISCO GOES ONTO WIN 27-17. MATT NOW KICKER HARRISON BUTKER EARNED FIVE OF THE CHIEFS POINTS IN THAT GAME. AND WHILE CRITICISM OF KICKERS SEEMS RAMPANT, ONE PLACE YOU WON’T FIND IT IS KANSAS CITY. THIS SUMMER, THE CHIEFS EVEN SIGNED BUTKER FOR THE FORSEEABLE FUTURE. AND WHEN YOU LOOK BACK AT HIS WINDING JOURNEY TO ARROWHEAD, IT’S PLAIN TO SEE CHIEFS KINGDOM FOUND A GOOD ONE. (NATS: “And…oh it hits the upright again! That’s impossible!”) HAVING A DEPENDABLE KICKER IN THE N-F-L IS IMPORTANT. JUST ASK THE CHICAGO BEARS. LUCKILY FOR CHIEFS KINGDOM, HARRISON BUTKER HAS SHOWN A DISTINCT ABILITY TO AVOID THE POSTS. BUT KANSAS CITY’S FAITH IN BUTKER CAME LONG BEFORE HE WAS SPLITTING PLAYOFF GOAL POSTS IN HIS CAREER AT GEORGIA TECH, THE GEORGIA NATIVE CONVERTED 72 PERCENT OF HIS FIELD GOALS AND 99 PERCENT OF EXTRA POINTS. (NATS: “The kick is good! And Georgia Tech knocks off the Hokies in Blacksburg!”) BUT KICKER’S AREN’T TAKEN HIGH IN THE DRAFT OFTEN, AND BUTKER HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE 7TH ROUND TO HEAR HIS NAME CALLED. (NATS: “With the 233rd pick in the 20-17 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers select Harrison Butker Kicker Georgia Tech. Keep pounding!”) THE FIRST KICKER EVER DRAFTED BY CAROLINA, HE INITIALLY PUT SOME PRESSURE ON VETERAN GRAHAM GANO. BUT DESPITE A GOOD CAMP SHOWING, GANO RECLAIMED HIS SPOT ATOP THE DEPTH CHART FORCING BUTKER TO THE PRACTICE SQUAD. THAT IS, UNTIL LATE SEPTEMBER OF 20-17 WHEN THE CHIEFS SCOOPED HIM UP. Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker: “You know, obviously a big stage. But you’ve got to treat it like any other game. Also, I’ve heard it’s a loud, exciting, vibrant stadium so I’m really looking forward to that. But all good things. What a way to start my career. Looking forward to it.” THE CHIEFS WERE IN DESPERATE NEED OF A KICKER AFTER SENDING CAIRO SANTOS TO THE INJURED RESERVE, AND BUTKER IMMEDIATELY FILLED THE GAP. JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER BEING SIGNED, THE ROOKIE CAME UP HUGE IN HIS N-F-L DEBUT. (NATS: “His kick is good!) Butker: “I didn’t have butterflies. I felt confident. I knew Dustin Hopkins was going to make the kick. I knew it was going to come down to a field goal. I felt pretty calm. I mean, I was excited. I wasn’t nervous. I didn’t have butterflies. You know, I hit the ball well.” FROM THERE, THE LEGEND OF HARRISON BUTT KICKER BUTKER BEGAN. HE HIT 91 PERCENT OF FIELD GOALS IN 20-17 WITH A PERFECT 28 FOR 28 ON EXTRA POINTS. THEN IN 20-18, HE HIT THE 90 PERCENT MARK AGAIN AS A KEY PIECE OF THE LEAGUE’S BEST OFFENSE. SO WHEN THIS OFFSEASON CAME AROUND, BUTKER FINALLY GOT THE COMMITMENT HE DESERVED ALL ALONG. Butker: “Last year there were so many unknowns. It was very difficult. Now I feel a little better. I’ve proved myself last year. I can do it. I deserve to be here. THAT PROOF OF BELONGING CAME IN THE FORM OF A 5- YEAR, 20 MILLION DOLLAR DEAL FOR ONE OF THE LEAGUE’S MOST CONSISTENT KICKERS. Butker: “It means a ton. They trust me. They have faith in me. I’m so happy to be a Kansas City Chief. I’m working my butt off to produce and be the best kicker that I can be. It means a lot. I’m happy to be here. I love it in Kansas City. It means a lot to me.” AND WITH THAT VOTE OF CONFIDENCE, BUTKER WILL HOPE TO KEEP KICKING BUTTS IN ARROWHEAD FOR YEARS TO COME. ” I love Kansas City and I feel like I will never leave this place.” DAN: COMING UP NEXT, DE’ANTHONY THOMAS IS ON A MISSION TO PROVE HE’S MORE THAN JUST A SPEDY WIDE RECIEVER WE’LL HAVE HIS JOURNEY TO MAKE THE 53 MAN ROSTER. COMING UP NEXT DAN WELCOME BACK TO THE BLITZ. WEEK 4 OF THE PRESEASON MEANS WE GET TO SEE A LOT OF GUYS THAT ARE FIGHTING FOR A SPOT ON THE 53-MAN ROSTER. ONE OF THOSE GUYS IS A SPEEDSTER THAT HAS ALREADY MADE PLENTY OF PLAYS IN A CHIEFS UNIFORM. DAN LINDBLAD HAS A LOOK AT DE’ANTHONY THOMAS AND HIS JOURNEY BACK TO ARROWHEAD STADIUM. IT’S BEEN A WHILE SINCE CHIEFS FANS HAVE HEARD THE NAME DE’ANTHONY THOMAS… HIS BEST SEASON STATISTICALLY… 2017 WHEN HE CAUGHT 14 PASSES FOR 143 YARDS AND TWO SCORES… THE CHIEFS RELEASED THOMAS AT THE END OF LAST SEASON, BUT WHEN THE WIDE RECIEVER CORE TOOK A HIT… THE CHIEFS KNEW WHO THEY NEEDED TO CALL. THOMAS KNEW ALL ALONG WHERE HE WANTED TO BE “De’Anthony Thomas/6th Season with Kansas City: I love Kansas City and I will probably never leave this place.” HE HAS DONE IT ALL FOR THE CHIEFS IN 5 SEASONS…. 503 RECEIVING YARDS… 186 RUSHING YARDS… MORE THAN 1,900 RETURN YARDS AND 9 TACKLES. MAKING THE MOST OUT OF EVERY OPPORTUNITY. “Andy Reid, you know, his mind moves 100 miles-per-hour. He’s always throwing in different stuff, but I’ve always been a contributor to allt he teams that I have been on. Just getting back to contributing, whether it’s on special teams or offense, just making plays and doing whatever I can to make this team successful.” IN 2018, THOMAS SUFFERED A FRACTURED LEG INJURY, WHICH ENDED HIS SEASON AND FOR THE TIME BEING HIS TIME WITH THE CHIEFS. THAT UNTIL MARCUS KEMP WENT DOWN WITH AN A-C-L/M-C-L INJURY AGAINST THE STEELERS IN WEEK 2 OF THE PRESEASON. THE BLACK MAMBA ALREADY TESTING THE WATERS OF A CAREER OUTSIDE OF THE GRIDIRON. “I met this one track coach, he saw me run one time and presented me an opportunity to get ready for the indoors. I was just like, whichever one comes first. This one came first so now I’m dialed in and focused on getting back to doing what I do.” THE HARD WORK AND DEDICATION PAID OFF ON SATURDAY *NATS OF TACKLE* WHILE THOMAS INSTANTLY WON’T TOP THE DEPTH CHART, OR GET THE NUMBER OF CARRIES HE HAS IN THE PAST, HIS COACHES BELIEVE HIS IMPACT ON THE TEAM WON’T GO UNNOTICED. “Dave Toub/Chiefs Assistant Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator: He was pound-for-pound probably the toughest player that we had last season before he got hurt. He’s much more than a returner, he’s a cover guy, a gunner, he’s good on kickoffs, he can block and he’s not afriad to stick his head in there.” “ERIC BIENIEMY/CHIEFS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR: He’s been with the team a number of years, he knows the culture, he knows the system, He understands how we do things. It’s important to get somebody back, but also somebody that can bring some juice. This kid loves to play football, loves to practice, he enjoys it. That’s the kind of character of people we want.” THOMAS SAYS THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF HIS CAREER HAS BEEN A WHILWIND, AND FROM HERE HE’S GOING TO TAKE THE TIME TO CAST A LINE OR TWO. “I love fishing. Fishing is real big out here, I guess. I’m just makign it to where I’m out here enjoying my life.” ((ON CAM)) THOMAS DIDN’T HAVE ANY RECEPTIONS, RUSHING ATTEMPTS OR RETURNS AGAINST THE 49ERS. WE’LL HAVE TO SEE IF THE CHIEFS TRY TO GET HIM THE BALL TONIGHT. DAN AND MATT BACK OVER TO YOU. TRACIS KELCE- “Footwork and hands. Let’s work it. Know who we’re working to guys… Know who we are working to…” MATT: COMING UP, TRAVIS KELCE GETS MIC’D UP AT PRACTICE AS K-C-BLITZ RETURNS IN A MOMENT. MATT NOW IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR THE BIGGEST PERSONALITY ON THE CHIEFS, MY MONEY IS ON TRAVIS KELCE. I MEAN, HOW CAN YOU PICK ANY ONE OTHER THAN THE HOST OF ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION’S CATCHING KELCE DATING SHOW? SO WHEN YOU STRAP A MIC ON OLE 87, YOU KNOW IT’S GONNA BE A GOOD TIME. TRAVIS KELCE IS MIC’D UP DURING PRACTICE FROM CHIEFS DOT COM’S THE FRANCHISE ONE. TWO. THREE. ZEUS! DAN SO WHAT DO THE LINEMAN DO FOR FUN AT CAMP WHEN THEY’RE NOT ON THE PRACTICE FIELD. OR IN POSITION MEETINGS. AS OUR FRIENDS AT 65 T-P-T FOUND OUT, THEY ENJOY SHOWING OFF THEIR CULINARY SKILLS IN THE CHIEFS KITCHEN. THIS FEATURES KAHLIL MCKENZIE AND ANDREW WYLIE AS THEY TRY OUT THEIR OWN CUSTOM MADE PIZZAS. THIS IS FROM THE FRANCHISE ON CHIEFS.COM “No hard feelings. None at all…” MATT: WHEN WE COME BACK WE’LL CHECK IN ON THE ENEMY, THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. K-C BLITZ WILL BE RIGHT BACK. DAN DESPITE LOSING THE GAME SATURDAY NIGHT, THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS LOST BACKUP QUARTERBACK CHAD HENNE. THE SECOND STRINGER BEHIND PATRICK MAHOMES BROKE HIS RIGHT ANKLE. MONDAY THE CHIEFS HIT THE FREE AGENT MARKET AND SIGNED MATT MOORE. BUT DON’T LOOK FOR THE FORMER MIAMI DOLPHIN TO SEE ANY ACTION TONIGHT. NOT ONLY DOES HE NOT KNOW ANY OF THE PLAYS, BUT THE FOURTH EXHIBITION GAMES ARE FOR THE YOUNGSTERS TO PROVE THEY’RE WORTHY OF STAYING ON THE ROSTER. CUTS ARE COMING. MOORE PRACTICED FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS WEEK AND SAYS THERE’S A LOT OF WORK TO DO. Matt Moore/Chiefs Quarterback:”I really didn’t expect a call. The learning curve is going to be fast. Shoot the regular season is just around the corner. It’s got to be very firm. I’ve got to get with it. I didn’t expect a call and when it happens it’s like lets go..” MATT THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS WILL RENEW THEIR RIVALRY WITH THE GREEN BAY PACKERS. OF COURSE THESE TWO TEAMS MET IN THE VERY FIRST SUPER BOWL OR THE N-F-L A-F-L CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AS IT WAS KNOWN BACK THEN.. TONIGHT’S GAME WILL NOWHERE BE THAT IMPORTANT. BEING THE FOURTH PRESEASON GAME, THE STARTERS WON’T EVEN PUT SHOUDLER PADS ON. SO NO PATRICK MAHOMES OR TRAVIS KELCE. YOU WON’T SEE AARON RODGERS EITHER. THE PACKERS HAVE A WHOLE NEW LOOK IN THE COACHING STAFF, MATT LAFLEUR IS THE NEW COACH AND THEY’VE RENOVATED THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL. KENNY CLARK IS IN THE MIDDLE OF A TOUGH DEFENSIVE LINE. OFFENSIVELY OF COURSE AARON RODGERS IS BACK FOR HIS 15TH SEASON IN GREEN AND GOLD. GREEN BAY WILL TRY TO IMPROVE ON LAST SEASON’S 6-9-AND-ONE CAMPAIGN. THE PACKERS WILL BE THE FIRST TEAM TO KICK OFF THE 20-19 SEASON WHEN THEY PLAY CHICAGO AT SOLDIER FIELD ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER FIFTH. DAN WE WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT ART HAINS, THE VOICE OF THE BEARS AND THE PREGAME VOICE OF THE CHIEFS ALONG WITH NED REYNOLDS ARE BACK THIS SEASON FOR K-C BLITZ. THEY’LL BREAK DOWN THE PREVIOUS GAME, CHAT WITH CURRENT AND FORMER CHIEFS AND LOOK AHEAD TO THE NEXT GAME. IT’LL AIR SATURDAY NIGHT’S AT 8:30 ON K-O-Z-L Z-27 STARTING SEPTEMBER SEVENTH. DAN THAT’S GOING TO WRAP IT UP FOR K-C BLITZ, AND FOR OUR PRE-GAME SHOWS.
